Why have the forums been so brutal regarding Dragon Age II?

Wrong i expected a sequel to Origins. I was always aware that we will never get another baldurs gate like game.pumpkinman13 wrote...
Simple answer: Cus they're raging that Dragon Age 2 is Dragon Age 2 when what they were expecting was Baldur's Gate 3.
If this game would be a new IP people would never be so hard on this game because there are no real expectations for a new IP. Atleast not so high as for a sequel of a 90+ game^^

Now besides the fact that going this way meant that there's no classic style RPG left in Bioware portfolio, DA2 in its current state is nowhere near the quality of ME2, the game it's trying to ape. It just simply feels rushed and lacking in detail and depth. It could have been a great action RPG if they had put more effort into it. But now it's just something half baked.
Regardless of the way the criticism is done here on the forums (mostly pointless unconstructive arguing), the underlying reasons are still there even if people don't care to express them constructively.

Bioware wanted call of duty's audience with DA2. Will they get it? Maybe to a degree. While at the same time alienating a lot of the existing fanbase.

LOL Obsidion would have made a great RPG out of it. Look what they did with Vegas for example Vegas feels alot more than the old fallout games. Infact if there Fallout 3 never came out this game would have gotten much higher ratings. Many people thougt its only an Addon but Obisidion gave the game much more depth to it.Mister Fain wrote...

Ok, so if you had a chance to get Call of Duty's audience, wouldn't you want that too? Nothing wrong with that, except I don't think this game is that much of a draw for them. There's still elves and dwarves and such so you like high fantasy or you don't.
So even though I'm in the midst of a DAO playthrough (I'm in Orzammar for my 4th ally and I'm about to take on Jarvia) I started playing DA2 last night in earnest, all the way up to the start of Kirkwall. Although no DX11 yet, the hi-res pack looks great, and presentation-wise is cleaner than any Obsidian game to date. Nothing looks rushed to me so far.
The combat does have a bit of a quicker pace to it. I found myself pausing more than in DAO. I did die (on normal), but only once. I don't get the various symbols in the convo wheel yet, I've seen like six or seven different ones so far. The ogre in the Tower of Ishal still made more of a first impression to me than the first one in DA2, I guess because the Tower ogre first picked up someone in gameplay, not in a cutscene. I also don't get that the darkspawn now resemble Skeletor's nephews while mom's bro in Kirkwall is wearing a shirt and vest left over from DAO.
But while disappointed in DX11 performance right now, certainly none of the above is deserving of a brutal response.

I know there are advantages to PC gaming. My favorite PC game with beautiful graphics that took full advantage
of UI/HUD and control capabilites was Freespace 2. It was widely acclaimed as the pinnacle of the genre. One of the best games ever made. It sold like 25,000 copies. The entire genre died on the spot. Consoles did not kill it, PC gamers killed it.
Do I get all "persecution complex" about it? Nah. Chill out and play what you like. You don't vote with your mouth you vote with your wallet. So do that and leave the endless complaining behind. That's my opinion.
Sigh, loved Freespace 1 & 2...
Are there any PC games that *Should* use a joystick anymore? :-)
MechWarrior was great too, but I think Mech Assault killed that...

What worries me is the possibility that the haters will stay on and the Bioware forums will become like the Bungie and Bethesda forums.
I wouldn't worry too much about that. These forums are one of the better dev forums out there. While for the moment you can count me as one of the haters, I see no point in flogging a dead horse now that my anger and frustration is waning. Myself and many others will happily retire to the DA:O forums and likely beging making mods for it to scratch our DA itch now that it is clear DA2 is not for us. Thats all there is to it really, the game does not cater for some of us and we are dissapointed. Truth be told I have seen very few outright rude comments, for the most part things are staying reasonably civil. For those of you who do like DA2, enjoy the game guys

Because Bioware has been brutal towards us who enjoyed the many aspects of Origins by ripping the whole franchise to pieces. If we were told that Dragon Age 2 was a spinoff expansion we would not mind and you would see no more than 10 rant threads on this forum. Marketing this game like the next big thing and then it turns out rushed, very average rpg/action game with a weak story, laughable dialogue and lacking features is BAD

If it makes you feel superior to think that, good for you. But the ONLY difference in the PC version over the consoles is that you have an auto attack. Nice try though.

As dark as Origins got there was always humor. And there was a strong, albeit simple, story to carry your attention.
DA2's story can be summed up like this, "I need money. I have money. Now something unrelated happens and I have to clean it up." Rinse and repeat twice.

This is a dumb reply actually. The consoles are not the reason why people are mad at Dragon Age 2. The game has been stripped down for 'new players' not console players. New players who will find the same old tactical gameplay too hard to understand and execute. Console Dragon Age 1 was perfect, nightmare mode was not a walk in the park, only thing we lacked was full pause and command and point&move to functionality which has been included in DA2 console versions but the game itself has been made easy. So before you bring your PC eliticism to the argument know that console players are affected just as much

I personally enjoy this game and see no problem with it. I also think that a lot of people in this thread and the forum, are all on high horses that just need to stfu and get off of them. I mean seriously, I would love to see these same people ripping on this game, go out and spend millions of dollars to set up a game that rivals, matches or even beats DA2. You people have seriously messed up priorities, and either need to enjoy the game for what it is, a friggin game, or not play it. Absolutely no one twisted your arm to buy this game. The fault does not lie with Bioware, but lies with the person that bought the game in the first place. If you want to be mad with someone, look in the mirror.
As for those that enjoy the game, I am with you. I truly like this game and I think it's better than the first.

The melee combat for a mage is vastly improved over that of Origins. Now the player uses the staff like a real weapon, whereas in origins it appeared as though you were "winding up to pitch a baseball".

I don't think that statement is entirely accurate either. I don't think DA2 is easy on new players either because of the way the game is made. Without a strong story to hold your attention and drive you forward you just languish around in different load zones.
In Origins (KOTOR, Mass Effect, etc.) you had areas you went to as part of the larger story and you finsihed those and moved on. It was compact and allowed for easy pick up 'n play. In DA2 you have no idea if clicking on this guy with a tag over his head will give you some gold or start a whole new quest.
I can seriously see a new player to the series being initally interested (escaping, talking dragon that has nothing to do with the plot ever again, a 'City of Chains', and all) but once the game proper starts....they'd be lost. Eventually losing interest in the whole thing.

It's no wonder the forums have a lot of criticism for DA2. It has made some serious steps towards action rpg gameplay, something that DA was not supposed to be. This alone will alienate everyone who liked DA because it represented a more old school RPG. BIOWARE of course knows this quite well enough, considering some of the developers that were doing DA:O left after they found out DA2 would be a more of an action ®PG.
Now besides the fact that going this way meant that there's no classic style RPG left in Bioware portfolio, DA2 in its current state is nowhere near the quality of ME2, the game it's trying to ape. That explains a lot, still sad they turned this into Dragon Effect out of greed basically. The Bioware that cared about what it did, make great RPGs, is thus seemingly dead. I guess we need to hope Obsidian gets its stuff together and releases a finished product for a change, maybe, just maybe we'll see something good then.
It's especially sad how they claimed this wouldn't turn into Dragon Effect, they kept repeating this lie over and over again (and yes, it is a lie or maybe some of them genuinly still believed it themselves). Maybe it was obvious to the people following the game closely that it would turn out to be so in spite of their claims, I guess I just didn't want to know that the spirit of Bioware is really dead so I didn't follow the game closely, denial I guess. Playing the game for a while has smashed my face into the facts, hard.
It might not be a bad game in itself and I think that's really not what it is about for most people that rage about it, but it signals the end of an era which I guess is what saddens all those like me who lost hundreds upon hundreds of hours of their lives in classics like the Baldur's Gate series, Plancescape: Torment and the first two Fallouts (to name the very top).
Me, I am extremely dissapointed, not because DA2 is necessarily a bad game (really haven't played enough to judge that yet) but because it signals the end.
Bioware, you killed oldschool RPGs with your action adventures, you made Boo cry and I dare say, you made a lot of longtime RPG gamers die a little inside.

That's great, if it makes you feel like you are NOT the weakest link. Than so be it but really now, some of us have lives and don't have time to be shuffling through menu's for hours on end or sitting and watching me cast magic four hundred times in a row just to kill some ugly ass orc. As much as I highly enjoyed DA:O i found it to be very long winded at times. The battles were fun but very old school to where it felt like I was just hitting buttons and watching a character hack and slash attacks on 1 monster at a time. I always choose warrior class and to me the new DA 2 carries a more action feel. It just feels more realistic. Bioware has to stay up with the times. If they kept making it for old school gamers then new gamers would never play it and you could kiss Bioware goodbye. They can't make games without money. Play the thing on ultra hard if you want a challenge. I wouldn't complain about it.

If Obsidian infiltrated Bioware Dragon Age 2 would have been more like Planescape Torment and less like Mass Effect 2. Both of which, I must add, are freaking awesome games. For the record. But Dragon Age: Origins players wanted more Dragon Age: Origins, not more Mass Effect 2. For more Mass Effect there is the upcoming Mass Effect 3 which has us/me gritting our/my teeth in anticipation.
