I would like to know if there is any need to spend points on strenght or constitution to use a good item.. And also where can i find the armor that the mage uses when you first play the game (On the myth that the dwarf is telling.) and what is the name of the armor.
Thanks alot.

From what I've gathered here and elsewhere.. the myth armor is the Champion's set and everyone seems to say that won't be coming till Act 3.
Now I am curious about how viable spending a few points on another stat to be able to wear leather or plate or something can be. I just discovered I could and anything to get out of this damn robe is awfully tempting.
I also wonder if there continues to be viable cloth items with legs/nondresses as the game progresses.

While you can put points anywhere and wear other armors, it tends to be best to stick with you own classes armor. Mages gain mana from wearing mage armor.
The biggest problem with puting points elsewhere is that if you want the best weapons/armor, you need to have 42 magic (for staves) and 32/32 magic/willpower for the best armor. By the time that you get later in the game, it will be impossible to change your mind unless if you have the Black Emporium addon and buy a Maker's Sigh to change your stats. This is why in DA:O they used your magic stat in Arcane Warrior to determine wearing gear.
However, if you want to try for a warrior mage with a sword and heavey armor (something worth experimenting on, at least) than you can dumb stats into strengthen and constitution. Or if a rogue like mage is your idea (though I don't see why in hell you'd go for that), dump into dexterity and cunning.
If you find any good hybrid mage combinations, I'd love to hear about them.

Thank you, rabid. I was hoping to find out some target/minimum stats that need to be aimed for so I wouldn't accidentally gimp myself along the way.
I was just looking to avoid the dress..but now you mention hybrids and I'm taking a new look at the Ability trees for my Hawke... Anything to shake it up!

Uhm, I dont know about whatever version you guys are playing, but in the PS3 version, all weapons are class restricted, so you are going to be stuck with that stave no matter where you put your points.

True..but the OP's inquiry was about non-robe armor for mages and the stat sacrifices needed for that. Which, sadly, does require non-mage stats to wear since armor seems to be stat based rather than class. Although I've run across a few restricted armor pieces as well.. beginning to think escaping robes isn't going to be as easy as we were led to believe.
Besides, the staff zapping animation would be too cool to give up even if they allowed non-mage weapons to be equipped. <shudder>

I got the Champion's armor (robe) for mage after I beat the high dragon. Took me quite a while to beat her!

So far all the weapons I see are restricted to the skills you need/class. A lot of the armor is wearable for Mages, but you need the right amounts of Dex/Cun, or Str/Con, soo it's the easiest to wear. I hope they have some better robe choices once I get further in!!

Yep Mike Laidlaw was somewhat - not wholly forthcoming about robes in his demo. He stated that you would not have to wear robes, only if you wanted. As a result you can choose to gimp your caster to wear leather/plate or you wear robes.
So ignoring the fact that no one ever notices the fact that I am throwing fireballs all over the place, I can not hide that I am not a mage in any way. My only class armor that I can find are robes and I carry a big freaking stick on my back. No one would POSSIBLY think - hey that guy looks like a mage!
So yeah, what he said was TECHNICALLY true, just left that fact out of it.
