I have xp right now, 32 bit home. 4 gigs ram but it only recs 3. BFG 8800 GTS 640 oc, Amd Athlon 64 x2 6000 3.1 ghz. Should i switch to Vista pro 64? not only because of ram but for directX 10?

I am running the same basic system. I see no advantage to that upgrade because vista is already outdated and I dont think you will see any visible improvement. I will hang on untill windows 7 is mainstream and the software has caught up to the capabillites of the new processors.

DAO does not seem to be that system intesive. It appears Low on pixel shaders which is what some people are complainig about graphicly. And even the recomended specs list three year old video cards.

Just thought I'd chime in.

Since I was like 14 I've never been happy with anything less than max settings, so it's cost me to keep up with that.
No question that the PC version has the advantage over the Xbox version; top down view for old skool Baldur's Gate players like me, better graphics, more features, etc, etc.

My Rig :-

Windows 7 64bit
AMD Phenom X2 720 Tri-core (OC'ed to 3.2ghz)
4gb DDR3 1333mhz RAM
Geforce GTX 275 896mb

Only bad point is my monitors max resolution is 1280x1024, but anything above that I often view as overkill.
Can's wait for the joy of playing this on max, to the max. :D

Thank you!  I may look into getting a new one then before the game releases.  Any budget concious suggestions?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.  Yeah, if you improve your card, you could run the game on high.  Suggestion-wise, I'm tell you what I told someone in a similar situation earlier in the thread (unless it was the other thread): I had the other components to run on high+, but I went with a relatively cheap and max-capable card solution - NVIDIA's 9800 GT.   I have some weird and specific reasons for going with it.  Also, the 9800 GT has lower power requirements than, say, the GTS 250 - that's something very important to look into.  You need to make sure that you have a power supply that can handle whatever card you go with.  The later/more powerful NVIDIA cards tend to be serious powerhogs.  Another thing to consider is what you want to do now, and what you want to do in the future.  If you want to invest in something that's got serious long-term power, you'll want a higher-end card.

EDIT:

Max is it - sad you can't run a higher resolution, actually.  That's a pretty solid setup.  Get on that RAM at some point though...not that you'll need it for DA:O.

Yup, though that Turion is pretty weak as far as dual-cores go.

Probably time to upgrade that video card.  We're talking low settings here.

Easily.  I'd say high or better.  The only thing I'd worry about isn't performance but how well that PSU is aging.  Antec was going through a bad phase with those SmartPowers:  their OEM (Channel Well) put in a lot of crappy Fuhjyyu capacitors, and a *lot* of these have failed over time, particularly when stressed under heat.  Doesn't look like yours has been close to fully loaded, but I'd still have a glance past the fan to see if you can see leaking or bulging caps in there.

You will be able to run it but you would run it better with a better card..

Hmm, you could try and upgrade to an XI950 PRO,it's a better card than you have now,it would fit just right with your specs.

It's an oldish card but still packs a punch and just the right upgrade for your PC..

They should be a bargain now.

You will be able to run it on medium setting, adding more ram is always good..

Ps.. Laptops are not very good for playing games unless you have plenty of cash for top gaming notebooks.

Bad advice.  That card is outdated too.  At this point you shouldn't get anything slower than a 4670.  Even if you're running AGP!

The PSU was one I put in to replace the underpowered one that came in the OEM case in 2006; so I'm hoping it is  fairly stable. I did open it up and saw no bulging or leaking capacitors (this gave me the opportunity to remove dust from all the fans etc.). Thanx for the headsup.

It is kinda confusing because the YouGamers "Game-O-Meter" reports:

Yes! Your system meets the minimum requirements for Dragon Age: Origins.
It should run on your computer, but you may have to play at a low resolution and/or turn down visual settings for acceptable performance. To improve the experience, note that...

  • Your computer has a dual core processor. A quad core processor is recommended.
  • The overall performance of your processor and video card is below the recommended requirements.
  • The performance of your processor is below the recommended requirements.
  • The performance of your video card is below the recommended requirements.
I realize the specs have been tightened up and the "Game-O-Meter" may not always be accurate and I should take it with a grain of salt.  Your assessment makes me feel better about it though! Image IPB

I'm afraid not. The processor is very old (2000), predating even the original Xbox, and the graphics card is almost as old (2003).

Don't think your GPU will do the job. It sounds like some onboard thing, which most standard laptops have anyway. Can you even run the CC? I doubt that, actually.
But if you have a console, get it for that. Else pray and upgrade ;)
