I didn't know there was a 8800GTS with 512mb. I only know the 320 and 640mb versions. Later, they made the 8800GT, which had 512mb and was slightly faster (memory isn't the same a speed).

The 8800 GTS 512 shares the same chipset as the 8800 GT, G92 as opposed to G80 in the older 8 series cards. It was a really stupid decision by Nvidia to give it the same name as an older card (GTS 320/640) that it outperforms by some distance.

In order of performance 8800 cards go:

Ultra
GTX, GTS 512mb
GT 512mb
GTS 640mb
GS
GTS 320mb, GT 256mb

All in all a really stupid and confusing naming scheme.

There's a hardware group flem1 created for these sorts of questions here:

There were reviewers who could max it all out with the recommended settings. Atleast, that's what I've heard.
Or well, it was a 8800GT that they used, which is slightly better than the 8800GTS.

are you crazy 8800 GT better than GTS, pleasssssssss......................http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=bfg+8800+gts+oc&hl=en&cid=3653780414433467750&sa=title#p

Core i7, 9gb of ram, a Tesla and dual Radeon 5870's.

I think the knife through hot butter applies here.

Going by the posted requirements I should be fine. Hoping for CPU and GPU upgrades early next year.

9800 GT = 8800 GT (rebadge)
9800 GTX = 8800 GTS 512 OC (rebadge)
9800 GTX+ > 9800 GTX (die shrink -> slight OC)
GTS 250 = 9800 GTX+ (rebadge)

I'm wondering if my GeForce GT 120M will be able to handle this game.

Yes, Nvidia has some really weird name schemes. Never liked them anyway, that's why I picked up the HD3870 instead of the 8800GT.

And 9800GT = 8800GT? I thought the 9600GT was the 8800GT. Ah well, I can't keep up with Nvidia 'logics'.

Hmm...how do you think my machine will do? It's pretty old, I should probably upgrade the ram a bit just to be sure. =)

Intel QX6600 (2.4GHz quad core)

Nvidia 8800 GTS (320 MB, running 1680x1050)

3326MB of RAM (800 ddr2)

any suggestions to be able to run it on high settings? I may upgrade to 6 GB of ram, and maybe even get an new GPU.

If you're going to upgrade, upgrade your GPU. The rest will do perfect. Not sure if you can max it all out, due to your GPU, but you're probably going to be close.

Don't bother with the RAM upgrade. You won't see much of a performance improvement, and by the looks of things you have a 32-bit operating system and won't be able to use any more anyway.

Ahh, I forgot about that. Thanks, that is true. Maybe I'll just take a look at the GPU then.

aaniadyen: For me, your system falls into the 'wait and see' category. I would try the game first, and only upgrade if you're not happy with how it runs.

My system is essentially on par with the minimum specs. I have no problem turning the visuals way down for the sake of performance, because I would really prefer to have the tactical view and access to the mod scene, but I also have a 360, so my question is this: can a PC with the minimum specs actually run it at a playable pace, or should I just bite the bullet and buy the 360 version instead? (The character creator runs wonderfully, if that's any indication whatsoever)

We don't know.

Usually, you won't be happy playing at the minimum specs. However, it looks like you can max out the game with the recommended settings. Usually, it's not like that.

And the CC isn't an indication, since it's just displaying 1 character. The game will have loads more to do.

You sure? I mean if the 250's just a smaller more energy efficient 9800....

Yea, but a single 9800GT is probably going to be (very close to) maxing it out. And you have 2 of them.

So unless DA:O really sucks big time in multi-GPU, you're all fine.

This is an awesome free tool to figure out how your system stacks up to games but DA:O is not on here. Maybe we could find a game with similar specs that is

I don't believe in tests like those. I've read too many hardware reviews to trust the numbers that are on the box.

Atleast, I guess it just compares your system to the min/rec specs?

I think you'll be fine maxing it with SLI 250's. Altho instead of getting 2x 250's I probably would have gone with a single better card.

I thought these type of games "auto set" the graphics to suit . leaving the player to tweak any settings.

Most games these days have an 'optimized' setting, yes.

But they're most of the time not worth the space of the screen they take. They don't take into account on what resolution you play, and that makes a big difference.

I hope we get ourselves an ingame benchmark, to quickly test how well we run stuff at certain settings.
