About the Arishok...

For those clueless, you get to duel the Arishok at one point. He is a dual-wielding warrior, who charges like an Ogre and occasionally sticks his blade through you and holds you up in the air with it. And does a ton of damage. Oh, and he uses health potions, too.
I thought it was another Ser Cauthrien fight. I finished nearly 10 heath potions and stamina potions trying to beat him on normal, accompanied by a lot of kiting, before I finally decided to give up and switch to casual.
Anyone beat him on Normal/higher?

But I got him my first try. Mind you, I ran around in circles a lot during the cool down time for health potions.

I've kited him around the pillars, wait for him to charge and then hit him while he's dazed from his charge. I get that "Run like hell" half of the time seems to be a required tactic... but is there anything obvious I'm missing from rogue that would make this easier? I even had lacerate on when I was melee and it never seemed to make a difference. :/

Ha...okay, but seriously...
I took my whole party and hid in the corner of the room until I was able to kill all the guards and the Qunari mage, and then worked on killing the Arishok.

@Oneiropolos: I think there's an option to decline the duel. I didn't try it, but did you?

Oh, is that what happens when you choose not to duel him?

For Clarification for others: If you have Fenris in your group, since he knows the Qun well, he manipulates the situation so you can 1 on 1 duel the Arishok. It's quite crafty of him. But the Arishok is absurdly overpowered 1 on 1 and if you can't handle him (I couldn't after 12 tries), if you decline the duel, you get 10 rivalry points with Fenris (accepting is 10 friend points) and you fight the entire room. But depending on your personal build and party, this is often easier.

Since you're not prevented from summoning your dog, you should keep one out at all times. Otherwise, keep about 20~ health potions (I don't remember using more than 10 at all tbh) and a few stamina potions on you, then just run in and hit him with abilities, etc.; then just run-away whenever your HP is lower than 30% I'd say, since he can't do any long-range damage (really, he can't hit so long as you're only a few feet away).

Yep, only way I managed to get through it was to decline the duel. It made Fenris a bit irked at me.. but I'm trying to build my rivalry with him because maker knows he won't stop deciding he likes something I do then he doesn't.When you decline, you fight them all as a party and it's -ridiculously- easier.

I shall remember that whenever I get to go through my next playthrough. Thanks for the advice.

I'm playing a mage, a spirit healer. He literally cannot kill me. I can't do much for damage, so I just afk for a while autoattacking him. I came back once and he was at half health and he bugged me out through a wall and I ended up stuck on the upper balcony with no way to get down so I'm in the middle of doing it again.
There's an overpowered defense class in DA2??

I took Merrill and Varric (yes, no third person. Quite a bit more fun to be honest) After the initial start of the fight, I avoided him and made everyone focus the casters, then I let Varric and Merrill get owned in the face while I killed the rest. Then it came down to just beating on him with the usual ogre strategy. Run in, use 3 skills, run in circles. Being a reaver really helped too, since using Sacraficial Frenzy + Scythe, Whirlwind, Mighty Blow took him out in 3-4 rounds. Only took 2 stamina potions.
