How do you beat him? (2H Warrior)

For those clueless, you get to duel the Arishok at one point. He is a dual-wielding warrior, who charges like an Ogre and occasionally sticks his blade through you and holds you up in the air with it. And does a ton of damage. Oh, and he uses health potions, too.

I thought it was another Ser Cauthrien fight. I finished nearly 10 heath potions and stamina potions trying to beat him on normal, accompanied by a lot of kiting, before I finally decided to give up and switch to casual.

Anyone beat him on Normal/higher?

I did...it's possible. Just kinda a pain in the butt.

But I got him my first try. Mind you, I ran around in circles a lot during the cool down time for health potions.

I'm playing through as a mage, and I'm at this part. I have Aveline, Anders, and Varric with me and I keep dying. Some help will be much appreciated.

Oh, nevermind. I figured it out. >_> I guess I had to say something. lol

I cannot figure out a way to win as a rogue. He bloody still hits me when I'm -behind- him after a backstab. I actually turned the game down to casual because I'm getting so frustrated and STILL no luck. I'm a dual-wielding rogue, with no archery talents to try to make this easier.... which I imagine they would by quite a bit just considering how much kiting I'm having to do.. I keep my hound out at all times, use backstab everytime it comes up. I'm finally trying the archery method, and it got me hurt less, but still couldn't get him even to the K of his name. (On a previous attempt, I got him to the H Arishok but that was it.) I don't know why they had to give him health potions on top of him being ridiculously powerful. He drank at least twice in one of my fights. I'm really discouraged and thinking I won't even see ACT III at this rate... and I'm one of the people who DID punish myself by doing GOA DLC and defeated the harvester.

I've kited him around the pillars, wait for him to charge and then hit him while he's dazed from his charge. I get that "Run like hell" half of the time seems to be a required tactic... but is there anything obvious I'm missing from rogue that would make this easier? I even had lacerate on when I was melee and it never seemed to make a difference. :/

I believe the black emporium has some manuals to respec your character, I'm considering doing this when I get here, as my brother had a heck of a time with this fight.

btw the hard part is not getting his health down, but keeping it down. Every time I'm near beating him he drinks health potion. And it's unfair that he has a unlimited amount of them.

::sighs::  I'll probably start fresh on the Arishok tomorrow and try again, but after two hours of dying on him (with fights taking 10-15 minutes before he manages to kill me after I get him somewhat low but then he drinks...) I'm getting to the point of wanting to just wanting to let someone else beat the encounter for me. Unfortunately, all my friends who would be capable of it are online, no one could actually come to my computer and do it.  I really want to just continue the storyline and not be increasingly frustrated by ONE fight I can't get past... it's the first time I've actually wished I could just resell a game because I feel like somehow I'm just too incompetent to finish the fight. I can't sell the game because I bought it on EA's PC download. But this fight isn't a 'challenge' for me. It's just a headache and making me feel pretty crappy about myself.

<.< >.> Magic.

Ha...okay, but seriously...

I took my whole party and hid in the corner of the room until I was able to kill all the guards and the Qunari mage, and then worked on killing the Arishok.

Running around didn't work for me :(. I was a Reaver. Bad choice for a fight like this.

@Oneiropolos: I think there's an option to decline the duel. I didn't try it, but did you?

Oh, is that what happens when you choose not to duel him?

I beat him on my rogue but I think it was dumb luck. I had Anders, Varric and Aveline in my group. I basically beat the hell out of the lower group of Qunari then dragged the Arishok away from the rest of the group. The key imo is getting rid of their mages quickly so use your rogue skills for that and just let Aveline tank the leader. Make sure Varric doesn't wander up the steps and try to pull the rest of the Qunari on you. I had him basically target whoever I was on then once I handled the trash on the bottom of the steps I just let everyone go all out on the Arishok. I switched to playing Anders though to make sure the heals would go off right. I did put his tactic to healer but it didn't seem to work right at time so I just did it myself.

Yep, only way I managed to get through it was to decline the duel. It made Fenris a bit irked at me.. but I'm trying to build my rivalry with him because maker knows he won't stop deciding he likes something I do then he doesn't. :P When you decline, you fight them all as a party and it's -ridiculously- easier.

For Clarification for others: If you have Fenris in your group, since he knows the Qun well, he manipulates the situation so you can 1 on 1 duel the Arishok. It's quite crafty of him. But the Arishok is absurdly overpowered 1 on 1 and if you can't handle him (I couldn't after 12 tries), if you decline the duel, you get 10 rivalry points with Fenris (accepting is 10 friend points) and you fight the entire room. But depending on your personal build and party, this is often easier.

When fighting the Arishok 1v1, I learned your best defense is a tactical retreat, at least for a Melee DPS.

Since you're not prevented from summoning your dog, you should keep one out at all times. Otherwise, keep about 20~ health potions (I don't remember using more than 10 at all tbh) and a few stamina potions on you, then just run in and hit him with abilities, etc.; then just run-away whenever your HP is lower than 30% I'd say, since he can't do any long-range damage (really, he can't hit so long as you're only a few feet away).

I shall remember that whenever I get to go through my next playthrough. Thanks for the advice. :D

On normal he only drank 3 or 4 health potions. I drank around 15, but I eventually took him down. He DOES stop healing, you just need to keep on pressing through. RE the last post, I went through without fenri, and still ended up dueling him one on one, but I had a pretty good reputation with the Qunari up to this point. I think on future playthroughs, I'm gonna have to sell out isabella or take on the whole room. I feel like a bunch of regular mobs are a small price to pay for being able to focus fire on the Arishok. He probably is easier than most bosses with a group.

I'm playing a mage, a spirit healer. He literally cannot kill me. I can't do much for damage, so I just afk for a while autoattacking him. I came back once and he was at half health and he bugged me out through a wall and I ended up stuck on the upper balcony with no way to get down so I'm in the middle of doing it again.

So for those of us who haven't gotten that far, yet...Decline the duel and use party tactics to kick their asses. Got it!

The fight seemed pretty ridiculous, granted my warrior is a tank so I guess the damage isn't great. Probably need to stock up on potions, I had 6 when i fought him I'd say you need around 20. Even on hard I couldn't beat him, ended up having to do it on normal... I imagine he'd be easier on something other than a warrior.

I completed the fight on Nightmare, since normal was too easy (2h warrior)

I took Merrill and Varric (yes, no third person. Quite a bit more fun to be honest) After the initial start of the fight, I avoided him and made everyone focus the casters, then I let Varric and Merrill get owned in the face while I killed the rest. Then it came down to just beating on him with the usual ogre strategy. Run in, use 3 skills, run in circles. Being a reaver really helped too, since using Sacraficial Frenzy + Scythe, Whirlwind, Mighty Blow took him out in 3-4 rounds. Only took 2 stamina potions.
