I beat him in a duel as a 2h warrior, using the reaver talents like devour and frenzy really helped out and as others have said you pretty much charge in do a few talents then run away. It is best to charge at him right after he charges since they are pretty easy to dodge I also usually ran away if I saw him spin his weapons all around and was able to save myself from taking a lot of big hits. I went through like 7 potions I think.

Rogues who dual wield, its best not even to try. it tooko me like 3 times and finally i just gave up and used archery. you dont need shot talents, just a high damage bow. try and let your dog get aggro at first but that only helps for a few shots. just kite around till he charges, thats your damage time...i did it with 11 potions, 3 healing wards, and a maybe 5 stamina droughts. took 35 minutes or so
this fight is not fun, and it makes me feel like my character is such a b*tch. ive been loving the harder fights, but this one doesnt make you feel like a badass at all, loving the rest of the game though

I beat him on normal first try with my blood mage (1v1). It mostly consisted on letting my mabari nip at him and me running around casting spells here and there and drinking health potions.

The Arishok must have drank around 10 potions before he finally stopped/ran out.

Hit him with close range damage spells (SF, CoC, WG, and Force Mage spells), healed/lyrium potion, hit him with Tempest and Firestorm spells, Kite around him. Rinse and Repeat about 5-6 times and I won on my first try with my Elemental/Primal Force Mage.

Kiting him around with a mage in your party is the best and easiest thing to do.

I kited around him most of the battle. Played a 2 handed warrior reaver build. My tactic was to wait until after he charged, hit him with a pommel strike, stunning him, unload a few skills into him, then run away and repeat. In the end though the game glitched on me and he threw me through a wall. Fortunately, whirlwind can hit through the wall so at that point victory was certain since I could hit him but he couldn't hit me.
People playing the 2-handed: my advice (learning how effective it is later) is to use crow venom (very efective since it slows down his attack rate), stun him (with pommel strike), use both blood frenzy and (upgraded) might, then bash on him until he's not stunned. Rinse and repeat.
For anyone interested in the glitch, after he charges, if he is facing the main door into the room, hit him with a tar bomb, sticking him in place. Then, run up behind him. If you're lucky (if you want the glitch) he will impale you, llifting your character into the air. If he is close enough to the door, he will throw you through it. After that, so long as you have Area of effect skills (since you can't target him with normal attacks - Dog can though, oddly) you can kill him without getting hurt. Just don't stand next to the doors as he can attack just a small distance through them.

Without decent crowd control skills, and a lot of health/stamina/restoration potions, the 1v1 duel against the Arishok is officially impossible for a dual wield rogue.

Never knew that you could have a duel with him.

Either way, my party was able to deal with the group fight incredibly easily (on Hard difficulty).
Aveline, Varric, Merril, and I (Mage). Sent Aveline in to attack the Arishok and draw all the aggro. Her gift reward shield you get right before this is a HUGE help here with it's damage return. It almost guarantees that everyone will stick to her.
Turn on Immovable if you have it for extra survivability, since she doesn't need to attack to hold aggro, and she won't be moving anywhere for a while. Bravery is also quite effective here, making her produce more than 3 times the normal threat with all the enemies stacked on her.

Everyone else just spams skills to kill the four enemies in the lower area, then drops as many AOE's as we can right on top of Aveline. Focused regular attacks/single target skills on the Mages to get them down next, then cleaned up everyone else until the Arishok was left. Killed him easily then, since Aveline built for pure tank and damage soak is ridiculously durable.

Only had to use 1 health potion, improved Heal was enough to deal with everything else.
I was really worried when the fight started that I would get owned with how outnumbered you are, but winning it really gave me that "Damn, we are a bunch of Badasses" vibe.

I think there's 2 Mages, 4 ranged, 6 or 8 melee, and the Arishok himself all at the same time. No waves here thankfully.

If you are dueling him as a dual wield dagger rogue, it can be done, but it's brutal. Treat it as a twitch game, and manually dodge his moves. In most cases you can. Move sideways out of the way, then click attack, you'll jump in and hit him 1 to 3 times, (you'll have to judge), them move out. Also, lots of stupid running in circles to wait on his charge (so you can dodge it) and on potions. As a rogue, you have no ability to resist his knockdowns, so you must avoid them. Make sure you have a ton of potions, prefferably restoratin potions. Oh, and keep resummoning your Mabari. It doesn't do much, but it helps.

Stupid fight, intensely boring and only possible to win by cheesing.

(On normal.  I played the rest of the game on hard, but turned it to normal for this duel.  I suspect I coudl win it on hard, but it'd probably take a good hour or so.  It took about 20 minutes on normal.)

Didn't do it as a group fight, but I can't really see the issue.  Let Aveline tank him, clean up the mages first, then the other trash, then deal with him using cross class combos.

I did the Duel with him on my 2 handed Warrior and only had to attempt it twice. All but 2 of his attacks can be simply Side stepped when controlling your character.
The first is a Horizontal slash that for the life of me I only was able to avoid by being lucky and moving BEHIND him when he first started that animation.
The other is the one where he just spins his blades around, he'll hit you multiple times during this one but just take 2 steps back and you avoid it completely.
Having Reaver as one of my specs probably helped out also with the heal in it's line, but basically just micromanage your character and it's not that hard, just don't try to go toe to toe with him as a Melee Character.

I cannot figure out a way to win as a rogue. He bloody still hits me when I'm -behind- him after a backstab. I actually turned the game down to casual because I'm getting so frustrated and STILL no luck. I'm a dual-wielding rogue, with no archery talents to try to make this easier.... which I imagine they would by quite a bit just considering how much kiting I'm having to do.. I keep my hound out at all times, use backstab everytime it comes up. I'm finally trying the archery method, and it got me hurt less, but still couldn't get him even to the K of his name. (On a previous attempt, I got him to the H Arishok but that was it.) I don't know why they had to give him health potions on top of him being ridiculously powerful. He drank at least twice in one of my fights. I'm really discouraged and thinking I won't even see ACT III at this rate... and I'm one of the people who DID punish myself by doing GOA DLC and defeated the harvester.

I've kited him around the pillars, wait for him to charge and then hit him while he's dazed from his charge. I get that "Run like hell" half of the time seems to be a required tactic... but is there anything obvious I'm missing from rogue that would make this easier? I even had lacerate on when I was melee and it never seemed to make a difference. :/

I've beaten him solo as a Rogue, I found Decoy works wonderfully (still takes a while), I don't know if it was my game glitching or what, but sometimes when I use Decoy, he would break and at least visually appear not to be doing anything. Sometimes however I'd suddenly see a blue-swirl around him and he'd hit me rather hard, knocking me away.

However, most of the time he just kept wailing at my Decoy (when he wasn't bugged) and that'd get me plenty of hard-hits in. I just had to make sure to pull away before his spin went off to avoid damage. Avoiding his charge and getting hits in also eventually wittled him down (I wonder how it would've went had I used poisons?). I have to say, throughout the entire game as a Rogue, I think Decoy (especially with an upgrade or two) is my favorite skill.

Haven't played rogue but it seems like a lot of grenades would effective. You can buy them in Dark Town. That and dance around him a lot to try and get back stabs.

I beat him, first try, with my 2H Warrior. I'd activate Cleave and use hit-and-run tactics maybe throw a Mighty Strike or Holy Smite in there from time to time, I found that most of the time he couldn't hit me after I worked out the ridiculous range of his attacks. (Suffice it to say, I was completely out of poultices after the battle, but it felt so good to take down the Arishok in single combat) :)

I couldn't beat him 1v1 as a Shield/Sword Templar-Berserker tank, though I only had 6 or so health potions. I couldn't even damage him much without using berserk, I had to hit him with Pommel Strike to stun him, then Assault him to even damage him...

I think the 1 v 1 duel was a bit of a bad design decision.

I was a mage so I had no problem, technically speaking. I used no potions but the fight consisted of 15+ minutes of running in circles waiting for him to charge and then unloading a CC and a few spells.

Given that I had been on pretty good relations, and the Arishok challenged me to an honorable 1 on 1 duel, I felt pretty crappy about cheesing him like that. On the other hand I reloaded and tried a straight up fight and got 2 shot'd, so as far as I can tell there is no way to beat him without benny hill kiting.

Try not going 1 v 1! i did that and i kicked he's ass... well it took me 2 tries but i used Aveline as the tank going in with shield defence blocking everyone's hits. and i used Merrill to make them sleep, then i used that raining firecomet things with her as well. I also used Varrec to hold them of from far! It worked wonders :)

Yeah, the requirement to kite him as many builds makes the entire duel feel really cheesy, rather than an epic duel like in the video. I think they need to change his abilities if you duel him, he seems to be tuned for a group.

Sad.

I actually kind of liked the Arishok. I don't think the Qun is the solution (you ain't treating my sister like you treat your mages, bud), but he's right that the city was an unjust sewer which needed cleaning up

Reduce the difficulty and stock up on combustion grenades. I beat him fairly quickly my second try this way. While my flasks did not stun him most of the time, these combustion grenades worked every time and stunned for several seconds. By my third bomb I just focus fired him dread real fast. So let him charge, then get two quick moves in and run. Throw a grenade when your stamina is back up to full and beat the crap out of him.

Hit and run for somewhere between 20 minutes to an hour, lost track of time.

I beat him as a 2H Warrior by making him run nearly straight into the pillars while slashing him with my sword from the other side of it. If he started any large attacks I just backed up to avoid them and then went back to work. Lame, I know.

I beat him in the duel on hard as 1H Reaver Warrior no problem. Used about 5 potions and just ran in guns-a-blazing. Tanked him to death with my high constitution and armor. Dealt barely any damage to me, but he took a good 7 minutes to kill.

4 attempts as a DW Rogue (first on Normal, rest on Casual) and I plump for ganging up on him. I liked him too.
