It took me two tries (two handed warrior). Pretty well just run around and attack after he does his rush thing. I found he uses his potions less when you use them less so I put on all the equipment I could find that had health bonus and restoration and get my health back while runnning like a little girl.

Dueled him it on nightmare as a DW rogue and won after a couple tries. He actually has a limited amount of potions because he stopped drinking them after awhile. The key to the fight for me was Decoy and backing away from him whenever he telegraphed his AoE spin move. I found that he's also susceptible to stuns as I also had the Harmony talent that gave me a 1% chance to stun enemies and it procced a couple times during the fight.

Dueled him as a DW rogue on nightmare, took a few tries to finally get him down. I noticed that landing a confuse on him gives you an insane amount of time to deal damage too him (at least 20-30 seconds of attacks with no response from him), though the land rate on it is low. painfully slow fight.

as a mage on hard difficulty took me few tries , but it's possible, i kept running around, not giving him a chance to hit, sometimes i stop, he almost hits me and i run away until my skills cooldown is done
and i had no health potions, just like 8 mana potions , also i had the heal skill so i healed myself a lot of times
and for some reason he drank HP only like 2-3 times
and just wait to get to Meredith at the end of the game, she is a real pain in the ass

HA! Thank you, kind sir!
Fought that bastard at least 10 times, then tried using confusion. It landed 3 times in a row, and on the 3rd time it glitched and he just ran in circles for the rest of the fight while I whittled him down!
EDIT: Hard difficulty.

I manged to do it. I kept using Pummel and the combustion grenades that I had on me. the grenades stun him for a really long time.

If you duel him the Arishok is incredibly easy to defeat as a mage. It's very easy to avoid every attack if done right.

Bah, I tried with DW and I had no luck, either. Luckily I had a tonne of Maker's Sigh in my inventory and finally found out that imp. Stealth worked quite well for waiting on potion CDs, but imp. Decoy was amazing. That pretty much made my fight.
I had some stam issues though, quite wise to only use the stamina for CC abilities, and make sure you have good crit/damage overall, that will have to be your main DPS. Confusion didn't do much for me, though, sadly.

I didn't get the chance to actually duel him (didn't bring Fenris), but has anyone tried this as DW duelist? I suspect it wouldn't really help since everything the Arishok does is a special ability. I didn't really notice but does he ever just auto attack?

The Arishok was the worst boss battle I've fought in a long time.
All it turned into for me was 20 minutes of smacking each other back and forth.

I dueled him (1 v 1) as a 2H warrior on hard difficulty. I would kite him around the room until he did his charge, and then immediately as he started charging I would side step and activate cleave, and then use scythe and then mighty blow and sometimes whirlwind. Sometimes I could only safely attack him with 1 ability depending on where he started charging and in what direction and how close I was to him, but I usually could get off at least 2, and sometimes could get 3 without getting damaged.
If you're worried about health you can use devour or a health potion, and if you're worried about stamina you can use second wind and bolster when you've got a little bit of distance on him as you're kiting.
Good luck! Don't worry about his potions because he only has a limited supply. Not a hard fight if you're patient, just boring as hell.

Yeah I was a dualist/assassin. Parry did nothing for me in that fight and all I did was get really lucky with confusion.

I only attempted him for the first time 1v1 last night before bed. But I was tossing bombs at him and they'd stun him for a good chunk of time and give me some free time to get some hits in. I'm about to fire it up again right now and give it another shot. If I can't do it I might just decline the duel and do it the old fashioned way.. where I go afk and let my group handle it (kidding.. even with tactics adjusted I have to babysit them)

You don't have to bring Fenris, I didn't have him, but without Fenris he has to respect you. I had fairly positive relations with him, and even told him that if I were him I wouldn't turn over the elves. I don't agree with his solution to Kirkwall, but I sure agreed with much his diagnosis. Unjust cesspit of humanity. Once my family was no longer keeping me there, I don't see why the hell I'd stay.

As a mage, in the end, the only way I could beat him one on one was to hit him with Crushing Prison, drop a Firestom on him and kite about like a march hare on a Speed OD.

I suggest hitting him once, running away, hitting him again, running away. I know, it sounds totally stupid but attacks in DA2 can be dodged unlike in DAO and this tactic has gotten me past lot's of hard fight. Don't just stand their and fight him fairly is what I am saying. One on one there is now way for you to win because he is a boss and you are alone. I guess my tactic is pretty cheesy but I just see it as using what the game gives me; closing attacks and mobility.

I beat him as a mage. Petrify works on him and stonefist stops him for a second with its impact. He has a windup for each of his attacks; you can let him wind up to attack you and then run out of the area to avoid it.

I beat him using a mage on a 1 v. 1 duel on normal.
All I really had to do was use hit and run tactics, I would use Winter's grasp/Cone of cold to slow him down, and then used fire spells to hit him while he was slow/frozen.
It took FOREVER, but it worked.

I'm playing as a 2H warrior with zero crowd control skills...not even pommel strike since I respec'ed. So needless to say my regular attacks were like hitting him with a nerf bat. I upgraded mighty blow and that does take off some HP, but I needed like 20 hits with that to kill the guy since he had like 4 potions.
So yeah...I honorably accepted his 1v1 duel and proceeded to benny hill kite and used 13 health potions and like 7 stamina potions. I would've declined the fight if I knew it would take me half an hour.
Honestly, I thought this was a scripted fight where you were supposed to lose...although I should've guessed. In dragon age any fight is possible after beating Ser Cauthrien DA:O.

Uh... yeah... have been searching around and haven't found my problem with Arishok yet.... I get him down to VERY little health with my warrior fine no problem.... but then it just stays there. I have been running around him for over half an hour using quick heal when necessary but no matter what he does NOT fall below that same level of health... am I missing something or am I right in thinking this is a glitch? (note I have done this 4 times now)

Figured I would have little trouble with the arishok as a primal force mage, but apparently he has some sort of knockback immunity. I ended up running in circles for a goodly amount of time and then I decided to just reload and give him Isabela. Never had any use for her anyway.
This was on hard, by the way.
