Took 8 tries but I managed to beat him on my DW Rogue.
I had 10 Health Pots and 9 Stam Pots.
His impaling attack killed me whenever I wasn't at full health.
My build was spread out alot and was kind of terrible.

All that said here was the strategy.
Until he pops his first pot hit and run circling out of his attacks, and using assassinate whenever the opportunity presented itself.

Once he pops a pot he'll start impaling so I no longer wanted to be anywhere near him for that.
Kited him in circles around both pillars and when he rushed into a wall I ran in and used Assassinate.

Took about 15 mins and I finished him when he had a sliver left with a backstab (risky as he can counter it into an impale).

Hello :) I just defeated the Arishok in the duel this evening as my mage Rose on normal. (thanks for tossing your gf to the wolves Fenris...) and I thought I would add here how i did it. He uses 3 potions it seems so you have to keep dpsing him down through that. Make sure you have plenty of health and lyrium potions before you go in.
I used improved fireball, arcane shield, normal winters grasp, firestorm and Barrier. I also had Greater Heal but didnt use it much over potions.

I ran in a circle around the room and waited until the Arishok charged I moved out of the way. I then cast winters grasp to slow him and fireball. When I had barrier up I would cast that and then firestorm. He might catch you but will take damage from it. If he knocks you about take a health potion. Be aware that if he catches you he can kill you fast so choose wisely when you attack him it's not a race. You may have to pause briefly to get him to use his charge.

I beat him twice, once as an Entropy Mage with the immobilize/disorient spells or w/e, the second playthrough as a Dual Wield Rogue using threat reduction, mabari, decoy and duelist.

Duelist ftw; makes ya tough. That and stun poisons.

Come to think of it, may have been the stun poison...

He always seemed to take a heal pot when I did, so I stopped using them, and he did /shrug could be cooincidence or the way he's made.

As for the fight it was a lot of running, using bolster to get my stamina up, and then cleave/scythe/heavy hit/whirwind, as many as I could get off safely, stamina providing ofc.

Mage with primal spells and force spec.

Petrific the guy cast all, and run in circle, and when petrify is up, restart.

Long but silly the only thing i have feel wrong is the music...
Benny hill show theme can be better appropriate for this fight for a mage... lol

Easymode at least at normal difficulty (2h warrior). Key ability was pommel strike (yes, you can stun him) and Bolster. I kited him around a pillar while spamming Bolster when low on stamina. When my offensive skills were ready i stunned him and unleashed.

By the way you can dodge his strikes easy by running behind him as soon as he start swinging.
I had to use 1 healthpot (well, im reaver...).

Managed to beat this guy on normal with a sword and shield warrior, using all 16 of my health pots and all 9 of my stamina pots.

Basically did the manly thing and attacked him without retreating. When my HP goes down to 50%, I immediately turn on Shield Defense to reduce the damage done to me while my potions are still cooling down. Once healed, I turn Shield Defense off to attack faster. The Arishok used a total of 3 potions during the fight.

then u run until its ready again. will take a while. sometimes he gets bugged. he kills ur illusion and stands there. which is nice since on nightmare u have to bash him for ages lol

Two-handed warrior on Normal; beat him without any difficulty. Specced into Two-handed/Vanguard/Battlemaster with Reaver and Berserker as specializations. Pretty much just popped Cleave and Sacrificial Frenzy, ran in and used Scythe/Mighty Blow/Whirlwind, then Second Wind, and then avoided his attacks until my Cleave and Sacrificial Frenzy were off cooldown. I even did it with Aura of Pain on, even though it's pretty much a waste versus a single target. Cheers!

I didn't find it very hard due to my mage being built for massive aoe, which allowed me to get his warriors down very quickly. After that me and Merril continued to freeze/slow him down until he died while anders kept Aveline up as well as hitting him with his spells.

Edit: Wait...duel....as in 1V1? I still think it wouldn't be too much trouble with a mage who could slow him down but still...thats got to be a ****.

He was easy mode for my dual dagger rogue. I beat him in single combat. It took a bit, but not difficult. Just attack until almost dead, then pop decoy. backstab to gain good positioning and whale on him until he breaks decoy. Then for some reason he just sits there doing nothing for a good while. Then once he is about to break out of that just stealth out and let him attack your puppy for a while.

He took a few potions, however wasnt a huge deal. He got me once in his sword grab thing, i survived that though. Take away the bug with decoy and it would have been infinitely harder i bet. I am playing through at a harder level now with a 2H warrior. Sure the duel will be much harder. Since i do not do the gay romances, and since Merril is just a very very dumb blood mage that wont listen to reason, that leaves isabella, so i have to fight him no matter what.

This is one battle where I had wished I was a mage instead of a rogue so I could have disabled him. I beat him as a rogue archer but it was tedious. I summoned my dog (and re-summoned him if it died) to help keep Arishok distracted so I could get some hits in while he was fighting the dog - which he didn't do very often, usually Arishok was chasing me and the dog was chasing him, but every little bit helps. I ran around the pillars in a rectangle waiting for him to do that talent where he rushes. He pauses, then rushes, and as long as you have kept moving he won't hit you. Then he must pause a second which gives you time to get in a couple of hits (archer hits are slow - might get more in with a melee Hawke). Every time he stabbed me and I was lifted up in the air I set a health potion as my next action and I always lived. I also noticed that he only has a few health potions, and once those run out he can't heal anymore, so this is really a test of patience. I think this boss would be much easier with a mage who could freeze or stun him, if those are effective.

I tried it both ways... fighting the the whole room as a lot easier and faster. 2H warriors are pretty powerful though so mileage may vary.

i used a 2h warrior. beat him first try on casual. um.... you might hate me for this, but i used the defense glitch. (equip and unequip a shield a TON of times, your defense rate will go up to 100% and the number keeps climbing the more you do it. he does very little damage to you.) and i had my Mabari distract him while i hit his back. it took a long time... : ) no health potions or anything.

I find it handy to keep the +armor potion and the poison that heals you (fellsomething poison?) for fights like this as a warrior.

As spirit healer without any offensive spells, it took me like 20 minutes to kill him with staff attacks on nightmare -.-

You have to show reverence and respect to him, don't lie about anything, and so on, and he'll call you banet-la, or something like that, which means you're worthy of a duel.

And that's the only way, really.  Isabela even tries to duel him instead, and he states that she's not worthy.

In my play through, I pretty much picked all the red stances with the Arishok and didn't lie about the Qunari bodies, and I was able to duel him.

And in the future, I will be using a console code to kill him because that fight is ridiculously unbalanced and just all-around awful.

I ended up beating him yesterday when I picked back up. Bombs are the way to go. They stun him for huge amounts of time. So as a 2h Warrior between bombs and pummel I beat him down fairly quickly on Normal.

Beat him dueling the 3rd try with my DW rogue on normal. Foolishly didn't bring any combustion grenades or many health/stamina with me into the fight, so that made it tougher. Since I haven't used my dog the whole game, I figured I wouldn't start now - even though that might also have helped. I did use crow poison.

It required a lot of running around and use of specific talents over others. Trial and error led me to exclusively use backstab - I conserved my stamina and just kept away from him until backstab recharged again. Vendetta and twin fangs were too slow much of the time, allowing the Arishok to react and lay me out before I could run away. Backstab always put me in for a decent hit, plus a couple extra quick a-button slashes before he turned around.

When he charged, I dodged out of the way, but followed close behind to plant a few slashes into his backside when he hit the wall. He always pauses for a second there.

The impalings sucked, but that was the only time I really had to use my health potions. It helped knowing he was going to start impaling me at a certain point during the fight. The first two times, he sometimes caught me in a corner or near the wall, making it an obstacle to bump into as I was climbing to my feet trying to get away. In that split second, he would whirlwind and finish me off. After dying like that twice, I only used backstab when he was in the center of the room, so I had lots of space to run away the instant I could.

He actually went down pretty easy this way - just a bit of patience required to keep up the hit and run.

I'm not sure that's right. I think I did all of that when I was playing, but never had an option to duel him. I know I never lied to him. After I walked into the Keep, we exchanged a few words, and then I had an option to tell him I'd get him the relic, try to talk, or fight. I said, "I see only one way for this to end." He agreed. He died--party fight.

Wait, there are options to fight him OTHER than in a duel? And do those options allow you to keep Isabela? Since every time I talk to the big guy, I either get the option to duel him, or let him take Isabela. And neither is an acceptable option to me. Duelling because I simply refuse to do a 3-hour pillar hump, and ditching Isabela because I don't want to miss her banter with Merril and Aveline.

And the damage dealt really is rediculously low for a rogue. The Arishok is immune to Miasmic flask, and evasion (upgraded!) doesn't have any effect on him either.

I beat the Arishok on hard as a 2h warrior without using a single potion. Equip health regen gear and run around in circles till he does his charge, you can then safely hit him once with an ability such as whirlwind. As I got better at it, I was popping cleave when I was out of the way of charge, scythe to close distance after he hits a wall, then mighty blow or whirlwind. Takes some practice though and takes a LONG time.
