I found the Arishok to be extremely similar to the Ravager in Jade Empire wrt to the tactics you need. Both fights are more tedious than difficult and the most likely cause of death is the player's own impatience.

Both lack ranged capability, are lethal in melee combat, and heal themselves (although the Ravager has endless heal).

It seems that every in Bioware game I play, there is always a boss where I have to kite while a weaker party member kills it...

Dog. I want a stronger Dog.

Wait, there are options to fight him OTHER than in a duel? And do those options allow you to keep Isabela? Since every time I talk to the big guy, I either get the option to duel him, or let him take Isabela. And neither is an acceptable option to me. Duelling because I simply refuse to do a 3-hour pillar hump, and ditching Isabela because I don't want to miss her banter with Merril and Aveline.

Maybe it has to do with the way you deal with Isabella, then. I told her she had to give up the relic, and she ran away with it instead.

I had to beat him on the duel as a hand-to-hand rogue because when I tried to just fight him with my full party his minions were kicking my ass.

If you have the dog, call him first thing in battle, and then be prepared to run like hell. I ended up using Assassinate as a sustained talent because I tried the one where it had a chance of stunning him and it didn't work all that well. Basically I ran around in circles until he did one of his weapon skills leaving him dazed, I then used Backstab. While he was focused on my dog, I could hit him about 4 or 5 times extra until he turned around. Be very careful of hitting him too many times because if he turns too quickly, he will maim you very easily. Then run again. It's kinda a dumb strategy but it worked for me.

I used 15 health potions to stay alive because I got a little too antsy and he impaled me a few times. The key to beating him is patience. If you think he's hard, wait until you accidentally happen upon the high dragon in Act 3! HOLY CRAP!

I think It's all dependent on your friendship level with Isabella - She has to be at least 50% between both rivalry and friendship to come back.  Mine was closer to rivalry and I didn't even get the option to surrender her to the Arishok.

If you duel him as a mage, it is a flat kite fight.  I did it on normal with my mage (force/spirit healer).  I also have stone fist and petrify.

Kite him around (be sure to have your dog out), let him charge.  This stuns him for a few minutes (there is an audible when he charges). Turn, CC with what you have, nuke till cc drops then run some more until your cooldowns are up.  This fight took me about 15 minutes of running around like one of the three stooges, but it wasn't hard.  Just be SURE he doesn't touch you (as a clothy)  you will die otherwise.

As a mage this fight can be made significantly shorter/easier through the use of one spell - Gravitic Ring. Normally you only have a small DPS window when he charges, GR expands this greatly once you cast it on his head immediately following a charge (otherwise he can charge out of the spell's effect). He'll be rooted for the duration and you can wail on him to your heart's content. Once it runs out, kite him until the cooldown is back and he's attempted to charge you again.

I found using the dog helps. It's probably easier as a mage or an archer because you can get him at range and just run away when he charges at you. I dread doing that fight hand to hand because he just mauls you up close.

As a mage the only real tactic is run away a lot and keep attacking him and chipping away at his health try freezing him if you have the spells as this will give you a few more seconds to chip at his health. This tactic nearly won on the first try but a clipping glitch after he knocked me into a wall meant i got stuck and couldnt attack him but he could hit me so i died >.< beat him second time around using the same tactic.

I used Varric's hail of arrows... and my mage used her fireball attack to pick off his goons... then I think I used Aveline to wail at him... probably tried to paralyze the jerk... then I basically let him have it with everything I had :)

Got him on the 2nd time

What difference does it make to the story if you duel him or don't?

The Ravager was incredibly fun!  Especially when you wielded a sword.

No, dueling the Arishok one on one is tedious, and aggravating, more than anything.  At least in JE, you got to jump.

Wasn't too hard for me. As soon as it started, I unleased all my talents at once, drank stamina and if needed, health, and wailed on him while watching his attacks. If i thought he was going to do one of his special attacks (like charge, or that spinning attack that hits you 10 times or so) i back up, heal, and wait for cooldown. I also keep drinking stamina and use talents whenever they are ready.

Not much really. Arishok I think has the most "choice" out of everything.

-Kill him + everyone else
-Duel him (Fenris has to be in your party, he knows the Qun)
-Duel him for Isabela (do Isabela's companion quests, have her friendship high, and refuse to hand her over to the Arishok).
-They leave in peace (do Isabela's companion quests, have her friendship high, and agree  to hand her over to the Arishok).

Cutscene after that is only slightly altered, by the remaining qunari either leaving or all dead. I've done all those outcomes except just straight up dueling him. I was using Isabela since I missed her on 1st playthrough so I did 3rd choice instead.

I must have reloaded the fight 10+ times on normal with my duelist/assasin rogue... but after I finally got through I reloaded the fight to see what can be done differently ..

If the Arishok wasn't using his autohit/knockdown moves (especially the charge or impale), it would have been possible for a high def rogue to face him. Once I realise my rogue (50/50 dex/cun with duelist sustains/passives) can actually go toe-to-toe for short durations, the duel becomes faster with less kiting and health potion chugging

JE Ravager was fun the first time I did it (straight-up fight instead of using disabling support stances). Went down to like 15% health before he drops.

Just did this fight and thought it was rather easy. I used the duelist rogue backstab skill to warp to one of the mages and kill them outright. I then had anders freeze the second one and my rogue quickly ran over and dealt with that one too. With the mages down I used AoE spells and crowd control tactics to quickly kill all the norma Qunari. Varric died at some point from being rushed, but Anders, Aveline and my rogue were all okay... I used freeze and assassinate on the Arishok and he was pretty much dead just from that.

I imagine if I had dueled him one-on-one I could have handled it using assassinate, backstab and the ability which gives you 20 seconds of crits.  Probably wouldn't have been a big deal.

This was on hard btw.

RIO_AB: Hawke faces off against the Arishok at the end of Act 2.

StingingVelvet: You should try the duel (reload and bring Fenris). You killed the Arishok with a CCC but that would be impossible in a duel.

When I dueled the Arishok on normal, Assasinate only took off ~10%. It does much more damage than Backstab and Vendetta but has the disadvantages of not shifting to the target's back (Backstab and Vendetta's position shift can avoid attacks) and having a very slow recovery (which matters if you use it against something you couldn't kill outright).

20 seconds of criticals can be largely wasted if the Arishok knocks you down.

While the Arishok recovers from a missed charge, it is possible to Backstab/Vendetta and run away before he retaliates but Assasinate is too slow. I lost count of the number of times I used Assassinate only to have the Arishok respond with the Impale move - really not worth it.

If your using a dual wielding rogue, the decoy ability works great. If you have the tougher decoy he's relatively easy.

edit: One on one duel

A neat trick (don't know if this has been mentioned yet) with a 2h warrior is hitting him through one of the columns. Yes you can do that. Kite him around one column with a weapon that has a frost rune on it for some slow, tag him every now and then, and wait for his health to go down. If you do this, most of the time he charges straight into the column (for his charge move), and you can keep attacking him from the other side! Only moves you have to watch out for are his flurry of blows (swings weapons around in front and behind) and when he slashes forward with both weapons, knocking you over. This is a little cheesy but standing toe to toe with this guy is suicidal.

Also, don't get greedy when you go on the offensive, his impaling move comes out really fast and can punish most everything you do, almost always dealing more damage to you than you dealt to him. Don't summon Dog either as he does little to no damage and only gets in the way. I don't know what decides how many potions he uses, but when I beat him he only used 2, while on an earlier attempt I swear he pounded those things down.

I beat him on Hard, so I'm assuming this works for any of the difficulties. Like I said earlier, cheesy, but he's a beast, so do what you gotta do to take him down.
