StingingVelvet: You should try the duel (reload and bring Fenris). You killed the Arishok with a CCC but that would be impossible in a duel.

When I dueled the Arishok on normal, Assasinate only took off ~10%. It does much more damage than Backstab and Vendetta but has the disadvantages of not shifting to the target's back (Backstab and Vendetta's position shift can avoid attacks) and having a very slow recovery (which matters if you use it against something you couldn't kill outright).

20 seconds of criticals can be largely wasted if the Arishok knocks you down.

While the Arishok recovers from a missed charge, it is possible to Backstab/Vendetta and run away before he retaliates but Assasinate is too slow. I lost count of the number of times I used Assassinate only to have the Arishok respond with the Impale move - really not worth it.

Sounds fun... when I beat the game I will reload that fight and do it solo.

Immobilize him,I used Varric's bomb that stuns him and his arrow that holds him in place, kill the rest with alot of Area of Effect spells, and finish him off.

ran around..and around...and around...and around...and around...

What should of been an epic fight became quite painful...could have desperately used some of Varrics much touted and promised, but desperately underutilized exaggerative story telling.

Now why didn't Bioware did that?

Imagine if Varric first describled the duel as Hawke positively owning the Arishok outright (have Hawke fight a medium health Arishok with semi-decent attacks) and players have an easy fight and think that's all to Act 2.

... THEN was corrected and went on to describe the real duel and players fight the actual Arishok which could toss them across the hall.

Because by this point in time Varric is well past the point of lying. The one time he does this, it makes sense because the truth is more painful to him.

Also, because it would get old.

I did it as a force/elemental mage and it was quite easy. But the force mages last ability is sort of designed for bosses and with all those stunning abilities.... Also you dont need to bring fenris to duel O.o but ive only done it fighting over isabella.

Frag bombs are probably the only thing in game with 100% chance to stun bosses.

Use them liberally.

Do the people at Bioware actually think that the 1v1 duel is "fun"? I don't understand how such a talented group of individuals could put in such a terribly designed encounter. This is without a doubt one of the worst boss fights I have ever played. It should be patched.

It's cool from the story point of view, Hawke defeating the Arishok in single combat. But the actual battle itself is not the games shining moment. At least you avoid fighting the Arishok and his supporters, those damn Seraabas get off one lucky AOE and the softer members of your group are trashed.

It's rather easy, just remember your ability to move out of the way of his attacks once he starts the animations.  Did it as a sword and board on Hard, was the only time I'd wished I'd roled 2H instead.  Literally took me 36 minutes to do because my damage was so bad and we were just absorbing each other's hits.  I drank lots....and lots of potions that day.

I love it storywise. Defeating the Arishok in single combat seems very Champion to me. The reality of kiting to wait for cooldowns was slightly less heroic. I had to reload an old save to stock up on potions, but I'm glad I did it.

Just remember ladies, if you can't handle the duel, decline it - then you have your whole party (woo tank and heals, eff fair combat!).

Although you don't have the questioner go 'ooooh... she bested him in single combat... so romantic...'

Which IMO is enough to do a killallhostiles if it gets seriously annoying >:]

On my 2nd playthrough (normal), I declined to duel him since I was a mage, used a poison for my tank that reduces enemy defense and a poison for my archer that reduces enemy magic resistance. Beat the Arishok in about a minute, after killing the minions :D

Woah, I did a normal reload from the Deep Roads and rebuilt my rogue with Maker's Sigh then play all the way to the duel ....

Drank TWO restoration potions! Cut the Arishok down to below half health in the initial exchange (jump attack the Arishok right off so he won't do a starting charge then: upgraded Assassinate + Dual Fang + charged-up Explosive Strike : a high def Duelist can go toe-to-toe) before he finally knocked me away and did his one and only pot glug.

Obviously, I thought it was a really lucky fluke and replayed. Things didn't work out exactly as before but still TWO pots!

Hmm, maybe I should shift the difficulty to Hard/Nightmare and see what gives ...

In a 1 on 1 duel with him as a mage, i froze him and unloaded all my offence spells on him then stuck my spirit healer on while my spells recharged, did it in one go

I had my party party members with me and decline his offer to duel one, this trigger the action where all my party members get into the fight. Playing as a Mage, I also had Merill, Anders and Varric (love his weapon) with. Concentrate on his spell casters first (3 ech) and then you can eliminate them

I played as a DW rogue. At first, I tried unloading all my skills on him but then would just die in two shots. I especially suffered while being impaled in the air. In the end, I did A LOT of running. I'd wait until he rammed into the wall, then I'd unload all my skills. It wasn't very heroic; felt more like a cat and mouse game. But in the end, I won and saved the fair maiden. :P

warrior here, normal, I just attacked him through the pillars.. my weapons reach could hit him through them, and he couldn't touch me. would have been impossible (or take a really long time of hit-run-hit-run) if I had done it normally.

Nightmare, melee specced rogue. Swapped to a crappy bow. Kited for 45 minutes. Won.

He speeds up if he doesn't charge and you kite for too long, though. Makes it a bit perilous.

Am I the only one who thought the charge animation was a bit hokey? Like he has... rocket boosters or something, to charge in such a long distance in a straight line and kick up so much smoke.

I felt like he could have used more attacks to make it more interesting, and been more... vulnerable to make it less tedious.

The damage/knockback of his attacks are not inflicted right away, giving you enough time to strafe around him so it doesn't hit you.

Hm, I see. It seems he always caught me when I was in the middle of turning around though... stupid enclosed arena.

What does Fenris actually do to let you have a 1 v 1 duel? My brother just got up to this part, had Fenris in the party, and was able to do the duel.... but Fenris didn't say anything to provoke it. O_o

I honestly can not believe this encounter made it past playtesting. It's tedious and a major letdown.

I'm sure Varric was embarrassed describing how the Hero of Kirkwall's "epic duel" was a cheesy kite-fight.
