So instead of guessing whether or not my laptop will run DA:O nicely, I was wondering if anyone knows of avaliable demos of other games that would compare. Then we can just download them and see how well they run.

That's really a near impossible task, trying to use a different game demo to see how your computer will run this game. It's not just about the technology, but alot of it has to do with how well it's coded; how optimized the game is. Two games can have similar specs and run completely different, from something as basic as drivers to how the other programs on your computer interact with the game. Some games can run beautifully on lesser systems, and other games can run poorly even if you have the best hardware money can buy.

Fair enough, as long as everyone here doesn't mind 50 threads asking if their PC can handle the game.

Unless they're all started by you, I don't see the relation.  There'll be 50 threads asking whether or not this one thread comes up with a representative demo.

The key factor in it being those people who start each of the 50 threads don't check for other threads on the subject!  Kind of like this one.

Right, because there's lot of other threads asking for an existing demo with similar specs.

We do have a lot of threads discussing specs, though.

The character creator should suit your purpose, and can be downloaded from the official DA:O site.

Unless you hear to the contrary from a Bioware engine programmer, no other game is going to give you an accurate picture of how DA:O will run, except as a matter of coincidence. There are just too many variables.

ETA The character creator is only good as a smoke test. If it doesn't run or doesn't run smoothly on your system, you can assume that the game won't. If it runs well, that does not mean the game will run well.

Again, you should try downloading the character creator. I've heard that if you can run that, you can run the game.

Granted, but you've got your answer: your PC will be able to run DA:O.

Maiverick - your system is recommended level, so you should be able to run the game at the highest settings. 2gb RAM is enough, adding more wouldn't impact the framerate much, for the most part it'll merely improve loading times.

More a theory than anything, but in my opinion, if you download a whole pile of demos (if you don't mind doing so much downloading, that is) with close requirements, you can probably get at least a rough figure of how it will run. Its statistics. Undoubtedly, if DA:O is on the far ends of the spectrum with regards to optimization, it will not help so much, but it will still be more reliable than simply running the character creator or staring at charts.

DA uses Bioware's "Eclipse" engine. I don't know if this engine is based on the one used for Mass Effect. Were they similar, you could probably infer performance from Mass Effect benchmarks found on various websites.

Completely different - Mass Effect uses the Unreal 3 engine, not one they created themselves.
