Okay, so it's not just me with weird audio issues? The background music seems really loud at times and the audio can get incredibly low for dialogue. I need to turn up the speakers which just turns up the background music so.. I try to turn down the music, but fiddling with the in game audio options does NOTHING. I turn down the music or sound effects and they're just as loud as they were when set to 10.

No, not just you. I have the same problem, sound effects/music are loud while speach is hard to hear.

Setting the effects/music volume to 5 and leaving the speech at 10 helps a bit, but the effects volume still seems to fluctuate from quiet to headache-inducing at times.

I've tried various settings in the speaker control panel, but nothing seems to fix it. I have no issues with other games, just this one.

An official word on this would be nice, it seems to be a common problem after reading various review/forum sites.

Forcing Stereo, and switching TO 5.1 Speakers seems to have fixed my audio problems. Thanks, everyone!

I tried that thing with forcing stereo, just makes the audio seem off to me and I still hear a ton of echoing.

Force stereo is the equivalent to setting the speakers to 2 in the windows control panel but it also will set the sound engine to downmix the game from 5.1 to stereo. If this option is selected in game it will not take effect until you restart the game (you don't need to reboot your machine). You should not need to change speaker configuration in the control panel.

Do you have any idea what might be causing the echoing problem in the first place though?

As it is Forcing Stereo doesn't fix anything, either for me or for my friend who has run into the exact same problem. Whilst going through the motions asked by EA tech support (updating drivers, running the game with as many background processes off as possible and even uninstalling and reinstalling the game) has yielded no results.

At the end of the day I'm resigned to the fact that this may need a patch to get fixed, just have to keep my fingers crossed that it's an easy and quick fix,

Same problem as well. Built in Realtek 5.1 on my motherboard. Tried multiple settings within windows switching between 5.1 audio and stereo and still no luck...

Make sure that any enhanced effects like eax and x-fi on the creative or realtek cards is disabled as it will be adding echo on top of the in game effects.

Under the realtek control panel, environment is set to <none>. I've tried all the speaker setups but nothing makes any difference.

I can live with the voice echo, its the weird volume levels that is giving me a headache. I've had to set the effects/music to 5/7 respectivley and the voice to 10 to get any semblance of normalization, and even then some effects are still loud, especially in the first cutscene.

This is an MSI board with onboard sound, using standard desktop (2) speakers ,if that helps at all. No other game has this issue, so I can't see that its a problem with hardware.

I have a question for anyone. I remember I had audio problems with the original Mass Effect and discovered an .ini file which held the config settings for the game. I found the .ini file for DA2 but nothing in there seems to stand out as the culprit. I wonder if there is something in this file or another that needs to be modified...

Totally removed and uninstalled the game through Steam and then re-installed, no luck. Tried updating my Realtek drivers to 6.0.1.6316 with no luck. I am convinced it is something within the game that is not compatible with my pc (Realtek). Also checked out the .ini file again but there really is not much in there about audio.

Specs:
NVidia nForce 790i Ultra SLI Motherboard
Built-In Realtek HD audio using 5.1 Speaker Setup
Win 7 64-bit
Steam Version of DA2

Its really too bad because I love the Dragon Age series and this game as well but this echo is driving me crazy! All the other sound is fantastic! Only when you speak with anyone the echo of there voices is overwhelming! Just to make sure I wasn't losing it I fired up DA Origins, talked to someone, and there it was... no echo.

For the Echo issue, I had this in Dawn of War 2, and I got rid of it by setting my sound card output quality to CD quality as opposed to 24 bit. Not sure if this will help you guys with the echo issue.

Another possible reason is turn off reverberation. I don't remember the exact steps, but I am sure you can google it fairly easily.

some people have reported that turning on "Loudness Equalization" on their speaker settings in Control Panel fixed the quiet issue.

none of this may apply to you guys however, but it may well be worth a shot.

Hmm, lowering the sound quality didn't help. And as far as I can work out the Realtek manager doesn't have any way to turn off reverberation. =/

Didn't help me either BwenGun. I tried removing all Realtek drivers from my system and using Built-In Win7 drivers, same issue. Is everyone that is having this issue running a Steam version of the game? Also is everyone using audio ports built-in to the motherboard?

Same annoying echo happening for me. I tried turning off "force stereo" and that seemed to make everything quieter with no change to the echoes. My Windows 7 sound settings are set to headphones, output format is 2ch, 44khz, 16 bit. I have to turn my system volume up to max to hear the game properly. I have made sure the win7 mixer settings are OK (game isn't turned down or anything)

I'm guessing the game uses software audio fx (no hardware EAX) it should sound the same to everyone who has the force stereo sound option enabled. I'm using the Intel HD audio onboard crap and am having exactly the same problems as all you Audigy users.

I've recorded it and stuck it on soundcloud. I turned the sound FX and music down to zero because the echo only occurs on the characters. The recording was done talking to my party in Kirkwall Docks during the day.

No and no. I bought the game DVD and I am using an ASUS Xonar DS sound card with 2.1 speakers set up to play 2.1 sound. It doesn't matter if I turn on/off force stereo, 5.1 vs 21, or use headphones. The echo is always there much like the one linked a few posts above this one.

Thanks Beefusan, that's helpful info. I was thinking about buying a new sound card to try and fix it but it seems that won't help. I am getting more and more convinced that it is something within the game itself, I guess I will hope for a patch or a newer version to fix the issue.

I was noticing it only seems to happen when in Kirkwall. Once I'm out of the city it seems to go away. I guess it's intended? It's annoying.

I have a 2.1 speaker setup with a Creative X-Fi XtremeAudio card, and I noticed that turning "Force Stereo" on made the voices more easily heard but made the echo chamber effect much worse. I settled for turning Force Stereo back off and setting an individual volume slider in Windows 7 for DA2 to be much higher than my normal apps, then turning down the music and SFX volume in-game to compensate. I can still hear some reverb (Bethany's voice in particular), but it's not as noticeable. Maybe it's in the voice recordings.
