Why so much hate on DA2 even though it has a great story?

I personally am enjoying DA2's story, it feels a lot more relatable than the over done LOTR style plotline that has been done over and over. At first I was a bit dissappointed when it didn't seem as "epic"... but the story and it's style is starting to grow on me.

I am enjoying how you are trying to make a name for yourself and exploring the city doing the side quests have been a lot of fun. I also like the fact you have family involved, and since my main character is male, the beginning of the game with the mage sister, it almost reminded me of Imoen from BG2. They're both mages... and hell they even look somewhat similar.

The side quests so far have been great, with very morally ambiguous situations, which I love.

Also I've noticed that almost all the criticism of DA2 is due to the flashy combat (lol?), not having a isometric view(valid criticism), and some other interface/design decisions.

However isn't the story/dialogue, character interaction the soul of RPGs?

For instance I got eaten alive when I criticized the combat mechanics and some other design decisions of Baldur's gate 2 (I admitted I loved the characters and story and that BG2 deserves a 9/10), however these same people that says RPGs are all about story are saying that DA2 is the worst game ever not because of its story, but because of its interface and combat mechanics... WTF... hypocrisy much?

So let me get this straight.

Baldur's gate 2 (Awesome story/questionable mechanics/questionable combat) = BEST RPG EVER!!

Dragon Age 2 (Great story/questionable mechanics/questionable combat) = WORST RPG EVER!!!

... wait I'm confused

(Personally I think BG2 has a 9.5/10 worthy story and DA2 a 8.5/10 worthy story. DA:O maybe a 8.8/10 story)

Are you saying that you're playing it only because of the story? You're not finding the combat fun?

Btw I don't like character interaction at all. I hate the wheel.

Liking the story or not is a matter of opinion. I personally didn't like it at all.

No I do find the combat fun, though combat mechanics is a topic of hot contention among rpg fans.

I just find it annoying that when I criticize flawed combat in another RPG such as Baldur's Gate 2, people go "you're an idiot for focusing on combat when RPGs are about story" and then the same people go and say "Dragon Age 2 sucks because its combat is not like Baldur's Gate 2"

I mean WTF?!?!?

A great story doesn't help when they butchered a great concept, and made it into Dragon Age: Mortal Combat streamlined™

I'm loving it so far, I actually prefer it over Origins. Everyone has their own opinion, their hating the game will not affect my loving it.

People hate on DA2 so hard because they pray that if they rage just enough, someone from Bioware will swoop in a promise them Origins 2.0 with more "rpg mechanics".

If I hated a game as much as people claim to hate DA2, I'd resell thr game while it was still worth something, and waste my time raging about something that's set in stone.

It'll all die down eventually

Death to the wheel!! Is just so simplistic and stupid. Before I didn't knew what words would anger Leliana or Sten so I would choose what I would say and if they agree fine, if they didn't **** em.
But now, up for good guy, down for bad guy. It's so simple and lame.

I don't understand how people are enjoying the storyline. Granted I'm only 9 hours in, but the story and writing so far has been shockingly dull. I still have no idea what's going on and haven't met any interesting or well-written characters. All of my companions, aside from Varric, have zero personality. I have absolutely no interest in my family members or the pointless drama they bring.. I have a giant sword and armor and I'm constantly covered in blood, I don't want to go home and talk to Mother dearest.

I know DA:O was generic, but at this point in Origins I knew my past, the state of the world, the broad story arc, my place in the story, my companions and their motives, the villains, etc. I have no clue what's going on in DA2 yet, and I'm really bored of Kirkwall already because it's so damned bland and lifeless.

I still have a ways to go with this game but I really do hope the story starts to pick up soon or I'm about to call it quits and sell the game.

Also there have been more cringeworthy lines of dialogue in this 9 hours of DA2 than in my entire 60+ hours playthrough of Origins.

They hate it because they expected late nineties gameplay with modern graphics and they got exactly the opposite.

The dialogue writting between DA:O and DA2 didn't change a thing, crazy huh?

In all honesty...DA2 is far greater than 1....let me explain...

Combat= Better...DA:O's combat totally breaks immersion...sorry hardcore rpg man, it does. No one wants to stand stationary and pick which attack they want to do before they do it. Combat should be instinctive and rapid...and DA2 is perfect at that....

Story= Epic. Sure, your not recruiting leagues of people to fight some ancient threat thats dug from the ground....but it is a traditional story, one that is not told to your face, but rather EXPERIENCED. Go and find the adventure...fill in the things with your mind...oh, and listen to the part banter...tis excellent for building plot to satisfy your needs.

Simplification= Better in this respect. Don't always think simple is worse...honestly, DA:O was too bogged down with meaningless things. It's a hapopy medium in 2...and this was a neccessary change.

Dialogue= Mastered. The combat wheel is amazing...if you can't grasp how much better it is than DA:O's system of mini paragraph wall of text, then I feel bad for you.

Essentially, he believes that the prologue didn't build plot.

And that's it.

Because folks have different opinions on what's good or not. Hell, there were a ton of changes from DA:O to DA2, and some of those changes were deal breakers for a lot of people

People may not like the story because it's too linear...

People also might not like the new DA2... I mean DA2 is WORLDS apart from DA:O and I'm sure that has people pissed off which is going to make them hate everything, even the storyline.

Personally, I mean, c'mon what did you expect? It's a BioWare/EA game. OF COURSE the Sequel is going to be completely different then the original.

I thought the demo made the Rogues look like lame Jedi's (starkiller) from the Force Unleashed two but so far I've played maybe 3 or 4 hours as a Warrior and I'm actually liking the game so far... Which is a HUGE surprise to me.

Anyway it's enough to tide me over till Homefront and then I can return to it when Homefront completes.

See, here's also another thing...people...what do you want the story to be about...How Hawke fights Andraste or the Maker?

I mean, DA:O spoiled many people in regards to story...look at Mass Effect 2. Mass 2 was nowhere near as godd a story as 1. And pretty much everyone agrees with that...however, it had its place...and was a very interesting tale that was told....

DA2 may be more small scale than Origins...but when you start looking at it as a fabled adventure of numerous tasks and expeditions...then you'll love it.

Plus...these characters are some of the most detailed I have ever witnessed. And, I love how they all mesh well together/ talk with eachother.

About character customization... there is alot more customization than in DA2 than DA:O.

In DA:O there was oh maybe one (maybe 2) effective ways to build a 2h warrior... in DA2 there is like a dozen ways to build a 2h warrior due to all the specialty trees.

There's a lot of customization you're right, I can be a Male Human or a Female Human... **** every other race... Right?

How can you say the story is good if you're not finished playing? A story has a beginning, middle, and end.
A lot of the reviewers said that the ending is disappointing.
