Just installed DA2 this afternoon, awesome game so far! Only thing I'm having a problem with is that my mac freezes when i quit the game. Is anyone else having this problem? It forces me to hard reset the computer, which i dont like doing

Do you have anything odd running in the background? Maybe an odd kernel extension or virus scanner, for example?

I am too, brand-new MBP 2011, almost nothing else loaded. Locks up and I have to do a hard shutdown with the power button.

Any read-outs from Console.app?

My macbook doesn't seem to freeze up on shutdown but I do "Sometimes" have a Kernal Exception Error! and a do you wish to debug window pops up. If I click NO, the program freezes and has to be force quit. If I click yes I wish to debug it shuts the program down. I will try and write the full error message when I have a chance.

I've only played a few hours on DA2 so I haven't see it (yet) but DA:O did the same from time to time. Heck even the PC version of DA:O crashed as well.
Many times the crashed on the MAC are repeatable and the only way to avoid it was to use another character to start the conversation or transition.

I can confirm the same thing on a 15" 2011 MacBook Pro. I have a quad-core 2.3ghz i7 with the AMD Radeon HD 6750M, clean install of Mac OS X 10.6.6. The problem occurs in both Dragon Age and Dragon Age 2. The game runs great until quitting, I get 100% consistent crashes here. The program freezes at the black screen and the Finder does not come back. I cannot force quit or use the application switcher (-Tab). My only option is to force a power-off by holding the power button.
Here' my console output at the time of a crash this morning:

I'm in the same boat, also with a new-edition MacBook Pro. I click the final Quit option and it lights up, and then nothing happens. The force-quit key combo doesn't bring up the usual window, I can't switch out of the DA2 app, nothing. (Although the cursor still moves, so it's not a complete lockup.) The only way out is holding down the power button to shut down.
In-game, everything's great.
Next time I'll try force-quitting as soon as I'm ready to leave the app.

I also have the new 2011 macbook pro with the 6750M AMD gfx card. I was playing DA2 for 4 hours straight with no problems, but when I tried to quit it froze my mac. I tried to use command+Q and it closed just fine, not sure if its a problem with the quit button or if has to do with how long the game has been running.

Cool that command q works and good tip. I wonder what in the new notebooks does this.

Haven't tried the command-Q tip, which I hope works.
Force-quitting from the game (after a save) locks things up in the same way as trying to quit using the game's interface: The screen action freezes, the cursor moves around in response to the mouse or trackpad, and the game simply doesn't quit or respond to any other inputs.

This is happening to me too. Also using a new 2011 mac book with the 2.2 quad core and the better-level graphic card. Game runs perfectly until I try to quit, the it freezes. Doesn't matter if I play for 2 hours or 10 minutes.

I've had to restart my iMac 27" (maxed out version from October) three times now since installing DA2. These restarts are very distruptive. Given my 8GB of memory, I get no paging issues with leaving my full development and social environment open when playing... having to restart it all is a pain.
I have successfully quit the game without crashing using the "Exit" menu option twice. Switching to the desktop with the game still running is a guaranteed system freeze.
Other than this issue, I'm enjoying the Mac port of the game. Smooth even at high settings.

I get this with homemade cider game ports. Might be related. Some of my games freeze hard enough that command q does not work.
It's very scary to hardware resetting a mac this often - bad for HDDs.

I have this lockup problem on my new MBP March 2011 2.2Ghz i7 with AMD 6750 M.
It also occurs if I try to change graphics settings in 'options' menu when using external display.
Ugh!! Patch please!

This is pretty widespread right now across many games. Some of the users have turned off auto-card switching (System Pref>Energy) with mixed results. Apple seems to be aware of the issue...kind of hard to ignore this.
My Macbook Pro '11 15" 1GB VRAM froze exiting DAO and DA2 with fans running at turbine speeds. I have not tried it after switching off auto-swap, just too tired. I just purchased my '11 today...man this breaks my heart a little.

what game settings are people using? I have AA at x2 and that could be an issue, with others on high/very high.

Something that will be useful in attempting to diagnose this is the stackshot utility.
If the system is frozen, hit CTRL+OPT+CMD+SHIFT+Period. It will dump a log to
/Library/Logs/stackshot.log.
Your system may not have this configured, ping me and I'll help you set it up if you'd like.
Also, if you have access to bugreporter.apple.com, please file this issue. We'll also attempt to reproduce it.

Hello all, I seem to be getting this problem as well. I just bought my MacBook Pro today and I can't quit my game and I can't seem to change the settings from "Low" to "High" and change the Anti-Aliasing from "Off" to "8x" all at once. Is it the new AMD card problem?

This is an issue plaguing a bunch of games on the new 15" and 17" MBP - including SC. It seems to be a driver issue.
I just play the game in a window, which seems to eliminate the nasty crash.
The game still locks, but I can force quit from the finder this way.

So I put the game in windowed miss but at the 1330 res. Played a quest then cmd+q and it shutdown fine. 1440 in window does not allow me to see the powers or dialogue choices. Also, why does the fan sound like we are preparing for take off?
