I am currently a level 7 two-handed sword wielding warrior and took Avelin as S/S tank, Anders as healer and Merrill as mage dealer on HARD to fight the mature dragon in the bone pit quest line.

I keep getting my **** handed to me on a platter.

Should I come back after leveling further?

Avelin can't hold aggro (keeps jumping to my main character or Merrill) and the taunt cooldown is too slow to regain aggro quickly. Of course, Avelin also doesn't have enough health to last out the potion/heal spell cooldown. I can only get the dragon's health down about 30% before everyone starts to drop.

Any good suggestions on ways to keep aggro, weapon outfit, party outfit?

Should I also turn off all tactics and micro manage everyone every second? Any good spells that work against dragons in particular?

If you have access to fire runes for armor, get some, they help greatly vs dragons, and are probably the best defenses vs dragons. If not, try to find +x fire resitance items, they will help as well.

If Aveline's health drops faster than the cooldown for a potion, then she likely doesn't have proper tank skills, she should be pretty resilient if you put points in the defender skill tree (upgraded stonewall + elemental aegis) and then her personal skill tree and lastly battemaster for support.

When I fought the Mature dragon (2nd largest dragon) I had an elemental damage mage (Merrill I think), 2 handed warrrior Hawke for melee dps, Varric for ranged dps and Aveline as tank. Didn't need to micro too much, just the occasional pause to tell the mage what to cast where.

If you can't kill it, then come back later with better equipment, because you shouldn't need to use potions that often.

It seems that dragons in DA2 aren't immune to fire magic as much as in DA:O and ice spells don't affect them as much (maybe this is a normal difficulty thing), so as far as spells go, firestorm is pretty strong still, any high damage skill is good.

Just FYI, for most of Act 2 and 3, I used 2 warriors, 1 rogue, 1 mage and sometimes 2 warriors and 2 mages. So maybe try with 2 mages and 2 warriors.

Hope some of this helps.

They way I did it was by dodging the Dragon's attacks with Aveline while everyone else wailed on it. I was also playing on hard. It turns out that attacks in DA2 don't do the DA1 thing of always hitting as long as the dice roll says it hits meaning that if you control Aveline and get her to step back before the Dragon takes a bite, it will miss completely. After that, I just dodged---attacked---dodged---attacked and killed it.

I was about level 7 when I fought him. Playing a 2h Warrior myself. I actually happened into a bit of luck during this fight. I found myself in need of healing, but the dragon was focused on me at the time, so I just kept running away in a big circle, and he kept chasing my while the rest of my team pounded him to death.

thanks all. After reading some posts, I decided instead to reset Fenris' skill tree (using potion bought from emporium) to defender class. Then went with Bethany (one point in heal) and Anders (building up healer tree) plus my two hand wielding warrior. Between Fenris' blocks, heal between Beth and Anders, Fenris had to only quaff one potion.

It's a bit cheesy, but for the most part, kiting works. My Hawke was a tank that kept losing aggro, but any time the dragon targetted Merill, Bethany or Varric, I'd just switch to them and run in large circles around the dragon. Having two other ranged DPS helped keep the damage on the dragon constant.

What Pabasa said. I was having trouble getting it down, before running out of mana or just having pots on cooldown. I had everyone hold their positions, and once Aveline had solid aggro, she kited it around whild everyone else pewpewd. Though by that point, it was atleast half way dead already. And I did the damn thing at like lvl 6.

I did this at lvl8. Have Avelin tank the dragon with the +defense sustained enabled and turn the dragon away from your party. Turn the rest of your team passive if you have to. Once Avelin has the dragon's attention, fire away and heal/pot as necessary. The dragon never injured anyone, breathed fire, anything. Just beat on Avelin. My party was Varric, Avelin, Anders, any my dps mage with the heal spell.

Yeah i was having the trouble too. My Avelin can't keep aggro. Does anyone knows how to keep aggro? I die twice in that fight. probably my first two death in my normal play through because I went there blindly lol.

hehe i do a lot of this.  Moving out of range of AOE's and buffalo runs at my Hawke.  That's how I handle the Ogre outside Lothering.  My go to group in this playthrough was SH Mage Hawke, S&S Aveline, and Varric/Sebastian or Varric/Isabella as DPS.
With the first Aura in the SH tree, upgraded, you feel like your PC is on God Mode...at least at Normal diff it is.

Yea, this will work every time at any level.  The dragon is stupid compared to Origins.  It'll just chase one person no matter what.

My group, 2 mages, 1 2handed, 1 Sword & Shield.  All level 6 or 7.

I placed my mages as far away as possible.  1 in front and 1 on the side, 2 hander was behind and sword and shield in front.  Then I just kep an eye on everyone and let them do their thing.  I got the dragon down to about 25% health and it killed my 2 hander.

Then it wanted to just eat me, mage, badly.  So I just ran while other mage and sword and shield beat it down.

This was on Hard.  If you have the health potions and maybe stonewall for warriors you could easily just beat it down.  It was dissapointing to see how the AI reacted by strictly atacking 1 person.  That just makes it so much easier.  I hope other boss fights aren't the same way.
