I just told them I'd convince the templars that they all died in the cave.

I told them that all the mages died, they said they'd search the cave, I told them they should be looking for fleeing mages, and they attacked for interfering with the investigation.

Doesn't seem to be, I was able to convince them being a Mage. During this play though I was consistantly using the "middle" dialog option except this time I used one that has a hand pointing down on the bottom left of the Dialog wheel. Another option is to get Varric to lie for you.

I used the Varric dialog choice which let the mages free without killing the templar and that they all died in the cave

Did the same, but Grace will still get caught in Act II and she'll be in the Gallows blaming you that you double crossed her, ungrateful b!tch!!!
