This is absolutely frustrating:

I first installed the game with no problems...played it with only one crash  during a conversation initiatig a cutscene (save for some bugged quests and the very annoying animation speed/DR bug)...then, after 10 days or so, I try to play for a second time with an imported save this time and it's crash fest...I get a screen telling me to reinstall the game and , after several tries, so did I.

Now, I simply can't reinstall the game at all. I even reformatted my HDD, replaced it with another one but to no avail (WinXP)...The game crashes during installation at random locations. The log always reads:

"Rar error: error 12 RAR process file failed: File CRC error.
Rar Details: 12 A Data error occured."12 A Data error occured."

Most of the install issues/uninstall issues and launch issues seem to be DX and MS Vis C++ related updates not being installed properly :)

*****************************

If you can not complete  INSTALL process or have issues launching the game try this:

go to C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Electronic Arts\\Dragon Age™ II\\__Installer\\DISK1\\Redistributable or C:\\Program Files\\Electronic Arts\\Dragon Age™ II\\__Installer\\DISK1\\Redistributable

run vcredist_x86.exe and let it install

go to: C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Electronic Arts\\Dragon Age™ II\\__Installer\\DISK1\\DirectX or C:\\Program Files\\Electronic Arts\\Dragon Age™ II\\__Installer\\DISK1\\DirectX

run: DXSETUP.exe

reboot

the game should run at this point if it finished installing, this also should let you RE INSTALL the game if the first installation failed. If you still can't run/install the game, below are steps to force uninstall it

If you have the DISK based version and the above files are not on your HDD, then hunt them down and run them off the DISK. For digital people, the installer folder is one of the first folders made when the game unpacks so it should always been there, even on a failed install

*******************************************

If you can't UNINSTALL the game (I had this happen on my laptop). I tried to unstall it because I got an install error.

I had to

* delete all game folders
* delete the dragon age 2 folder under my documents
* delete the registry entries for DA2 (search for Dragon Age 2 and Dragon Age II and remove all entries)
* reboot the OS

the game has now, manually been uninstalled.

**************

Edit: reformatted entire post for better clarity

a RAR error?? How did you get and install the game? DVD/CD? Steam? EADM? D2D?

EADM  use zip formats. I don't know of any version of the game packed in RAR format.. but that error would indicate corrupted files (or a scratched disc possibly). If your version is digital, re download it. Also, just to rule things out, make sure you DONT have WinRAR or WinZip installed on your box. The game can unpack itself internally. If an external program is kicking in, that could cause issues.

[/quote]Winzip and winrar are not intefering and I have only the essential processes running. Besides, as mentioned above, I managed to install the game once and play it.  And now, even on a tidy hard drive, the DVD version will still fail at some random point.

Anyway, I managed to install the digital version but now I am running into a DRM issue (activation.exe and awc.dll) Sigh! why is it that legit users have to jump through so many hoops...

Did that but still no luck...

It does really seem like a registry issue with the digital version of the file: after installing the game with the digital version, I decided to uninstall and try resintalling the dvd version (with no more luck of course, even after making an image of it). Anyway: when first trying to reinstall the disc version I was not  asked my activation code at the beginning of the installation: I then manualy removed any dragon age 2 entry in my registry manually and I was able to enter the code (but installation failed after a little while). I never got any screen telling me to enter my activation code with the digital version.

I know one issue with the Digital version is that when it installs I believe it makes the Folder similar to:

Electronic Arts\\Dragonage2™

Which that TM symbol causes issues.

With or without the tm I get the same error. It appears to be stricly caused by the DRM. Anyway, just give up...The time I've invested trying to fix this game as a legit user is not justifiable. I might try again when I get a new PC but this is ridiculous. How about a manual online verification?

Edit: the installation error was due to faulty RAm...the digital activation issue remains a DRM issue though.

I have now tried 6 installations and get the same error every time. I can't seem to get past the date activation check. I have tried everything listed on this thread. It starts goes to about 80%, then I get this error:

"We're sorry, an error has occurred - There is
a problem with your game setup. Please reinstall your game"

I'm running Windows 7 Home 64 bit
Intel Core 5 CPU M 430 @ 2.27 GHZ
4 GB memory
edit - didn't realize I had left out the video card: ATI Radeon Mobility HD 5650
The game is UK/European

My frustration is immense!
Should I try the 1.01 patch? Guess I could, nothing else seems to have worked.

edit- the patch doesn't help. I still get the same error without it even trying to go through the date activation. total attempts = 7.
driver update doesn't work, administrator tricks don't work (I run as administrator anyway). I'm stumped

2nd edit 24 hours later- I finally got it to work by setting up the separate administrator account for the second time, removing ALL previous Directx folders, restarting in safe mode and reinstalling DirectX from the game disc. On a whim, I tried to run the game and it worked!!!! Why? I don't know. The only thing I did differently from other attempts is trying to reinstall Directx  from the game disc. I hope this helps someone else.

GUYS!
I don't remeber who said it first, but that EADM works like magic!
all you need to do is download the EADM program, (if you already have it and it won't work try uninstall and then reinstall) and just open it on your desktop - there you will have an option to download the game, it didn't even ask me for my serial number, it recognized it from my game registration, and when its done you can just start playing.

Whoever came up with this idea, you have my deep gratitude - live long and prosper :P

An update on my situation: I have managed to get the game to install correctly.

In my case, the solution was to run the DVD in a Bluray drive and copy the files to a USB stick, from which I was then able to install to my gaming PC. It would therefore seem that the DVD is very fine grained and older DVD drives, like my Sony, just can't handle disks that fine grained.

Hey everyone, is anyone STILL having installer issues after going through the suggestions in this thread? They are:

- run as admin
- have Win7 SP1 + .net 4.0
- create a new user account and run it from that
- if you have an older dvd drive, copy the files to a USB stick and install from that

if all else fails let me know. In the mean time, you can try downloading through EADM

(note: issues with digital activation may require patch 1.01)

Correction: Make a new admin account ^^ Not user :D

I didn't have any problems installing the first time, but I've ran into a problem. I have already played through the game with zero problems (except the graphics thing on very high). I mean this game has been flawless for me.

On my second play through, right before I fight Meridith, I kill the 2 pride demons and get my 26th lvl. I go to the character screen and all hell breaks loose. The game crashes to desktop (well, it took a bit, but it got there). No game error message. I reload a couple more times, same thing. Then the game wouldn't load at all. I uninstalled the game thinking something must be corrupted. Now I can't get it reinstalled. I get the generic message (installed failed) at 11.4% of the movie .cab files. If I have to type this damn cd key in one more time...

I will not create another user account to play this game. The game installed fine on my DVD-Drive the first time, now suddenly it has problems? Not so sure about that one. I liked the advice of using the EADLM, and needed to get my 2nd ME2 copy anyway. Trying that now.

I'm having an issue trying to get this running on my brother's Vista PC. It crashes the moment thing game disc is inserted. We don't even get to the opening screen. I've tried using my game disc which works fine on my PC with the same result. I also tried turning off autorun on the off chance that I could start the installer through explorer. Crashed again when I tried to open the disc. This is the Bioware Signature edition released in Australia.
