Everyone realizes this is a technical SELF help forum right? Bioware can't come in here & comment on all your problems.

I've been having the same problems with DRM as everyone & I'm ticked.

EA you violated a court order by packaging your DRM into DAII & then NOT informing us in the EULA/TOS. You do realize that don't you?

I've been a loyal Bioware customer since KOTOR & that may end because you put glorified malware & install it onto my computer.

I understand you want to cut piracy down, but what EA did here only increases & encourages piracy! There has to be a better way. One that actually SERVES your customer while protecting your intellectual property.

It's been over a week now & all EA keeps telling me is that "A fix is coming"... Did you guys even bother to do any QA testing on this before the game went gold?

Actually, yes, I can complain that they don't come here and comment on my problem. You know why? Here is the response from EA Tech support after exhausting their level 1 tech guys and waiting 3 days:

Hello Fellow Gamer,

Thank you for contacting Electronic Arts Customer Support regarding Dragon Age II and your error. I do apologize for any delay in my response. I have been assigned to your issue and would be happy to assist you in this matter. As a gamer myself, I understand how frustrating this issue can be. I have a link below that you can use to resolve your issue. Please follow the steps in the link below.

http://social.biowar...ex/6442590&lf=8

YES. THEY ARE REDIRECTING ME TO THE SELF-HELP FORUM. THE OFFICIAL EA TECH SUPPORT IS REFERRING ME TO THE USER SELF-HELP FORUM.

EA. TECHNICAL. SUPPORT. IS. TELLING. ME. TO. USE. THE. UNOFFICIAL. TECHNICAL. SELF. HELP. FORUM.

LET ME REPEAT THAT.

THE OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZED TECH SUPPORT OF A MAJOR INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION IS OFFICIALLY TELLING ME TO GO F*CK MYSELF. AND TO FIGURE OUT THEIR PROBLEMS ON MY OWN.

SHOULD WE START DESIGNING ME3 FOR YOU NEXT, EA? PRO BONO? AND THEN PAY YOU 60$ FOR THE PRIVILEGE OF ACQUIRING THE DVD? AND THEN FINDING OUT YOU ADDED MALWARE THAT MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE TO PLAY??

The prosecution rests its case.

Guess what? I got EXACTLY THE SAME message from EA support. EXACTLY. THE. SAME. From the 'Hello fellow gamer', to the referring to the self-help forum.

Actually, the only difference was that they told me to try the Beta patch linked in this thread.

I told them if they'd read the first post properly, it confirmed the patch didn't fix the guest account issue.

No response to that yet. :P

Now what to buy for my exchange...HMMMMM. Shogun maybe??

Hmm. So I go through the steps at the beginning of this thread, try to play... it's loading, the waiting icon is spinning...
Then a whole new error message!

'The game cannot launch because of a misconfiguration. Please reinstall your game and try again. (guest_accounts_denied)'

I try running the game as admin, and it goes back to the same old haunting image from above!

EDIT:
Hoping for the best, I reinstall... and get exactly the same error.
So guess I just wait here, unable to play the game I bought, and hope Bioware release a real fix.

How many of you have downloaded the High-Texture package and installed it? If you haven't I'd give that a try.

I tried playing the game before and after installing the texture pack, but I got the same guest account error in all cases.

Anyway, Steam is not a valid solution.  I cannot easily return my retail copy since it's been opened (and I've used the key!), nor can I get the Signature Edition items on Steam.  Also, Steam DRM is even worse than EA DRM.

What's really annoying is that they're almost certainly trying to fix the problem without removing the DRM instead of just removing the DRM entirely.  The game has already been cracked for more than a week now, so the DRM is already useless and the pirates are playing without any trouble (with all DLC and bonus items) while we can't do anything at all.

Absolutely terrible.

So not impressed. Patch does the same thing as the beta patch: without it, the RDC at least starts, though it crashes before finishing. With it, I get absolutely nothing.

This burns me, because out of all of my friends, I've been the one to say, "Hey, if you enjoy a game, you should buy a legit copy. People spend years of their lives developing these things and we should support them. Downloading illegally is stealing..." and other sanctimonious things. Now, I'm about ready to ask one of my friends for his "source" just so I can make use of what I legally purchased. Maybe I'll just wait a decade for it to go on gog.com where I can buy it without DRM...

Bioware, please tell us that you or EA is seriously working on this and not planning to leave us all out to dry! The patch fixed the problem for some people, but not for me!

When you try running the game you say you get nothing.  Is this through the configuration utility (assuming you're not having issues with the configuration utility), or trying to run the game via bin_ship folder.

If absolutely nothing is happening, try installing Process Explorer and report back precisely what processes are trying to run, if any, when you click on play or try to run the game through bin_ship.

Just as a sanity check, have you tried the steps for repairing/rebuilding the WMI repository?

Please reply to the thread as it will let others in QA see the responses.  Thank you.

(note: Note, it makes sense that the Release Date Checker does not show up with the patch, as it has been stripped from the .exe)

I also cant seem to launch the game with the latest patch, a few seconds after clicking "Play" it starts to load then crashes. Is there any way to uninstall just the patch or will I have to completely uninstall the whole game and reinstall all over again?

I solved the Guest account problem for me. :)

It is exactly how I thought. The problem was the bios update.

I updated my gigabyte board ep43-ds3 yesterday from F9 to the F10 Beta bios. After that I was not able to play. The known guest account problem.
Other games from EA like Need for Speed Hot Pursuit need a new activation after the bios upgrade.
I downgraded to F9 and DA2 starts with the activation window and after activating it again it works as excepted.
It seems something in the bios changed that the drm thinks it needs a new activation and the drm in DA2 has a problem with the reactivation.

 Hi all :)
I'm following this topic I have the same problem 64-bit OS :/ I send the email to Technical Support  and they said:

I do apologize for the inconvenience you're experiencing with the game.

Please accomplish the following before launching the game:

1.. Title: Game crashes to Desktop on Windows Vista / Windows 7.
Link: http://support.ea.co...detail/a_id/380

2. Empty your Temp folder to prevent file conflicts. Click here for steps on emptying your Temp folder:

If you still facing the issue then finally, attach the dxdiag.txt to your email reply. Once I get the Dxdiag, I'll take a look and let you know what to do from there.

If there is anything else I can help you with, please reply back to this E-mail.

I did this steps but it sucks and wrote again. If I have any information about solution I'll write here :|

Is anyone having any luck with the WMI corruption problem? Flashing my BIOS seemed to fixed it but only after a full re-boot. Once I start DA2 and exit the game, the problem returns: System Properties reports no CPU/RAM info. So I have to do a full re-boot to get the system stable again. It seems that DA2 (or, more likely, the DRM crapware) has to suspend WMI but fails to re-start it.

However, I must admit, the game plays beautifully (after a full re-boot each time). I've just started Act 2. But this problem is driving me nuts.

No luck for me, still. I've checked for a BIOS revision, but none exist. I'm already running the latest version. My system information is reported just fine in the Control Panel, so I don't think there's anything wrong with the WMI cache. Indeed, the DA2 configuration utility gets my system information just fine. So, is it possible that the guest account problem isn't actually related to the WMI corruption problem?

I'm not sure what else to try at this point. I've done a few reinstalls, I've cleaned out the SecuROM stuff, I've updated everything that there is to update. Time to crack it?

Thanks for helping, Allan, and for letting me know that I shouldn't be concerned about the disappearing RDC.

I didn't have the "symptom" (lack of info about system components), but I rebuilt my repository anyway.  Didn't have any effect.

Here's exactly what I did:

With my firewall and antivirus (Avast) disabled, I did a clean install.  When I started Dragon Age 2 for the first time, the DragonAge2config.exe came up as usual.  I changed to DirectX 9, because my system cannot run 11, but left everything else as recommended.

Upon clicking "Play," the process DragonAge2.exe starts, but about a second later, werfault.exe (described as Windows Problem Reporting) also starts.  In another second or two, both processes have ended with no visible effect, other than what I can see in the Task Manager and Process Explorer.

When I start from the bin-ship exe, the DA2.exe and werfault start at the same time...  No significant difference.

The problem report contains the following:

Description

Faulting Application Path:    C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Dragon Age 2\\bin_ship\\DragonAge2.exe

Of course, I don't know what this means, or even if there is any worthwhile information in the error report.  I wouldn't be terribly surprised if this was caused by some problem with my system, but I would think that the game itself would have trouble running, rather than just the activation.

Regardless, I'm just going to go play Baldur's Gate (which I'm finding a lot more challenging that I ever found DA:O or ME, to be honest).  If this doesn't get fixed, I'll chalk it up to experience and wait until I get a new laptop.  After all, I haven't wasted any more money on this than I have on Chinese takeout in the last month.

*sigh*  I'm fresh out of righteous indignation.

Same here...  Windows 7 64-bit, AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core 4600+ 2.41 gHz, 6 GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 4800 series GPU (all drivers current)
  • Did the WMI repository rebuild, even though I didn't need to (could see all system properties)
  • Ran "net localgroup administrators NetworkService /ADD" command, and found out my account is already member of that group (I suspected as much, since I have all admin rights, and have already activated "hidden" admin account)
  • Reinstalled numerous times, latest from "hidden" admin account
Still, no joy...

Curiously, my son's game runs fine on his Windows 7 64-bit rig.  SIGH...

tl;dr version DRM is basically anti-piracy software that isn't a part of DAII itself but is a separate piece of software attached to retail versions of many modern video games. If you aren't seeing anything past the DAII Launcher it is likely a DRM problem (So you get to the DAII Launcher>Hit Play> Maybe the Release Date Checker shows up if its your first attempt/fresh install> Game Crashes) One way around the DRM problem is to wait, another is to use the cracked (illegal/against terms of use) version & bypass the DRM (But be unable to play DLC & log into your profile)

DRM means Download Rights Manager- What is DRM software? In layman terms its software that attempts to ensure that the version of the game you're playing isn't pirated/hacked. (That's the most basic breakdown of DRM obviously if you're a tech geek its a lot more complicated & intricate then that, but that's the basic idea)

Its a bit of a joke really because even games with fancy DRM attached to them can be hacked (sometimes rather easily) and allow you to play the game without paying for it / or playing the game in a method not intended by the original developers.

There is a huge debate going on between gamers & developers over what DRM does to your computer exactly & whether it is a legitimate means of controlling ones intellectual property.

Side note: Most gamers will refer to DRM as glorified malware intent on providing private & personal information that game developers have no right to accessing---- Game developers will defend themselves saying that they have a right to protect their intellectual property, their life's work--- Its a heated debate & one that probably isn't appropriate for this thread specifically so it is probably best not to get into it here--- Game developers do most certainly have a right to protect their work, they put a lot of time & effort & deserve just compensation for that--- but gamers have a right to privacy & DRM has created so many problems in which games cannot be played period (Like in the case of Dragon Age II), & thus spurred a whole new level or piracy.

Anyways back on topic... One of the ways you can find out if you have a DRM issue is to check your My Documents>Bioware>Dragon Age II>Logs folder--- It won't be created until the game first starts up (Fully starts up- past the DAII Launcher). If you can't get past the Launcher or past the "Release Date Checker" software then it is likely you are experiencing a DRM issue- The software meant to protect the game from piracy is locking you out of the game even though you are a legitimate customer.

Again the situation sucks but its typical of most modern games, one that game devs are going to have to come to a solution to... Cuz obviously the current solution sucks & doesn't stop piracy (It only encourages legitimate customers to seek out pirated games so they can PLAY the damn game they PAID for)....

I do not have the logs folder, as expected. So after checking every other problem, I will conclude that it is indeed the DRM. It can't be the release date checker, because as it was said before, it was stripped from the new patch an no longer shows up. Guess i'll just attempt to be patient and wait for a fix.

Work around for steam users who have 7 ult 64.

If your DA2 cant load sense the last patch do the following:

Right click the game in your steam library, select properties, select the updates tab, change from always keep up to date to do not automatically update this game.

Then delete local content.
Then reinstall using steam.

This worked for me to be able to play the working version of 1.00

Why not try running the game directly from the Dragonage2.exe file rather than the launcher? I have found it to work. The patch seems to have screwed up the launcher and it crashes the game when trying to load.

Is that hard to do? I want that malware off my computer, I never even knew it was going to be put on it. I know it's highly intrusive malware, and never really worked right. I'm surprised (not) EA hasn't learned from the past.

I've read up on it, and the company had a lot of trouble with this DRM, but still they persist. I'm beginning to wonder why.

Anyway, I want it gone. It's preventing my legit playing. Yes, I am VERY sure that this is the culprit, at least in my case, and not my BIOS, drivers, graphics card, WMI, etc.

I bought the game through Steam, and I played it for a few minutes. Then when I returned to it a few days later, when I try to start it through Steam, the CD-key pops up, I have to press Start Game from there, then the DA2 launcher comes up. Then when I press play from there, it just loops back to the Steam launcher! I can't get into the game cause both launchers redirect to eachother, anyone know how this can get fixed? I've tried re-installing the game.

Edit: Managed to work it out. The loop only occurs when running from Steam, the reinstall fixed the desktop shortcut.
