CONFIRMED FIX
Open your config tool and under "video" set the Direct X version to 9 (it defaults to 11). Save and then start the game. It worked for me instantly, and should work for you too.

So, my config utility actually crashes (it's one of the reasons I can't play, the other being that infamous privileges picture popping up when I bypass the launcher) so how do I set my DirectX to 9 if I can't access the utility?

Edit:

Windows 7 Professional 32-bit
NVidia GeForce 220

Maybe a stupid question but since I´m no tech-monster I´m throwing it out anyway:

Does the 11.4 Beta (AMD) also work for me as a Win Vista 64-user? (Always a little bit suspicious when only another OS is mensioned.)

Thanx.

Yes it should, you just have to choose the vista 64-bit version

*UPDATE* For those having problem with the release date check, I still havent completley gotten around it, but try adding the "activation" exe to your firewall exception list as well.

For me it was in C:Program Files (x86)Dragon Age 2bin_shipCore, so your Install directorybin_shipCore, it as a grean icon that says EA, and its called "activation"

This should clear up the problem with activation, hopefully. Im still stuck trying to find out whats up with the release date check, trying to find some way to skip it...

CONFIRMED

TESTED this and it did work for the activation bug.. ( at least for me )

Good Job

Allrighty, I was having the issue where you hit play and nothing. After doing something apparently fatal to my system trying to make it work, I have used a system restore and black magic to get the game to work.

The steps I took went something like this (sorry, little drunk from failure rage, and then more from success celebration)

*downloaded beta drivers from Nvidia

*in a fit of rage, completely uninstalling AVG free

*windows security alert began to taunt me that I might be at risk, so to spite it I turned off Windows Firewall as well.

*after that I went into msconfig, turned off all start-up programs and did a clean boot

*only after the computer booted back did I install Dragon Age 2

*instead of installing it to c/program files/Dragon Age 2 as is the default I installed it into G\\program files\\Dragon2

*after that installed, I went into configuration and smashed everything back to minimum, turned off all online options and wept bitter tears at the heartbreak that is human hope.

*after waking up naked in the backyard I went into the Dragon age to files, into bin_ship and used the executable there

that kicked me to a prompt looking for the release time, then asking me to register, and then the game itself loaded. Better yet, it lets me save.

I'll try to look back later and see if that helped or was in any way coherent.

The activation fix posted by Darkblade also didn't work for me.

Something I felt I should post: When I crashed in my Config Utility (again, after the 4th install to a new folder in a different hard drive) I told Windows to Debug the Problem. I got this message.

Unhandled exception at 0x0046d8f1 in DragonAge2Config.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x00000000.

Just thought I'd post it to see if that helps any devs or something. Not that they'd be using the unofficial forums.

[EDIT! FIX found]
Well as usual it was the DRM , solution:
- Installed with full admin rights with all antivirus and firewall software offline.
- Why they blocked the DRM and buggint the whole game?
- I suppose because EA has hack and slashed their DRM together from some actual backdoor trojan code and lolled at their office how smart they are , and because of this your antivirus firewall software will block this and corrupt your install GG EA.

->Play game
-> Starting screen with the EA DRM whirly thing
-> Error message " There is a problem with your game`s setup. Please reinstall your game. "

Funny part is there is no problem with the games setup for 99,9% chance.
It`s the DRM F ****** that is doing this...

This...
So far I have tried:
- Admin rights as usual
- Firewall and program rights for DA2 and EA DRM sh*t
- Reinstalling few times to different folders

Next up new drivers , though I doubt that is the problem as it is clearly DRM problem when EA ( U MAD BRO? ) DRM tries to do its magical stuff and pops out FU message on your face...

Don`t know why I bother actually anymore supporting EA when they allways pull sh*t like this same thing with ME2.

PS: Dear bioware plese do some internal testing with the DRM install before shipping your games since it allways seems to violate us faithful consumers who actually support your games :(

that error i've had with other apps before it happens when it tries to access the system files on your system drive where the drive has a bad sector. I'd try doing a chkdisk on that drive to see if any bad sectors are on the dirve.

Hey folks, those of you for whom the config utility doesn't work, don't bother with it. You can't get it to. Instead, bypass it in your bin_ship file and launch the executable file. I spent 24 hours agonizing over this, trying absolutely everything that has been suggested, and when I woke up I actually had a grey hair in my beard. It's not worth your time.

My problem was strange though, the game worked just fine for me yesterday but today when I tried to launch the game it would just silently crash (If you looked at the Task Manager you'd see that it would start for a second, then just dissapear), no log file or anything.

I wander whether there was any beta testing? How it was possible to let out such crude game on the market?

I got the game yesterday and tried it, but that damned release check thing showed up. I read somewhere that germany and west europe can play the game now (I hope that includes Holland).
if not I will try with firewall of and run as administrator.

Same problem, different user.
This crappy authentification program says "no connection to internet".
Tried out everything. Reinstallation, admin rights, disabeling security measures, opening the firewall etc. In the end the result was always the same, no connection.

For those of us with the AWC.dll problem

I recently formatted my pc and reinstalled, It seems in the process Framework 2.0 had been corrupted so it failed to allow 3.5 to install properly. I downloaded a tool to fix it and then reinstalled Framework Net 3.5 and 4.0 and it worked instantly. For those of you with that problem I recommend checking your latest windows updates!

Windows Vista Business

Hope this helps!

I did everything which has been suggested here but nothing helps. Its just the same bug over and over again. After the game is installed, I have to do the release check ... the release check is successfull and then nothing happens - except that the game crashes with the normal Windows message.

I tried it on both OS, WinXP SP3 and Win7 Professional 32bit , but the same result. This isn't even funny anymore Bioware!

EV#52957 – Some are getting a “Dragon Age II has stopped working” error

After 3 long hours, and using the KISS philosophy, on Windows 7 this worked for me:

left click start
right click Computer, and choose Manage
click device manager
click arrow next to display adapters
right click on driver listed and choose properties
click on driver tab
select update driver
this automatically looked on-line for an update

Once completed, I re-booted for good measure, and the game finally worked!

Good luck, hope this solution works for some as it did for me.

Using this method, the spinning timer lasts a good 3 or 4 seconds longer than it did previously (where it would almost immediately deliver the error message), but I am still getting the message. As I said, it bought a bit of time, but it still isn't getting me all the way there.
