I guess I'm having the same problem as everyone else - insufficient privileges... The worst thing is that it ran fine for a week before giving me any problems. UAC has been off always and there's been no hardware changes other than plugging my ipod in to charge (unplugging it didn't make any difference).

This is pretty poor - if your giving the customer something that they don't really want to buy (DRM) it has to be 100% dependable.

Regrets buying Dragon Age 2...

That must be the absurdly stupid period check-in feature of the DRM.  Apparently you can avoid this "feature" by not having an Internet connection.  I mean to test whether firewalling DA2 will prevent it from trying this, but I can't get that far, yet.

Just tried this - no joy. Worth a try though - thanks.

Oh, no.  Disabling your Internet connection won't fix the problem that you're having.  You just wouldn't have that problem if not for the periodic check-in that re-authenticates the game every X days.

Interesting...so apparently the activation.exe is made by sony... hence why it was cracked so fast. It is existing technology that been in use for a while.

Windows lists it publisher as: Sony DADC Austria AG

The SecuROM executable is made by Sony DADC.  The one that's failing for me seems to be EA's DRM.

I've had the game since the day it was released and have had no problems at all with installing or playing it. Only issue I have had is with the latest patch crashing the game during loading but I have found a way around it. Bypass the launcher and the game starts, runs, loads without a hitch. Only other issue I have had which is really nothing but its just annoying is the settings randomly set the video as windowed mode rather than full screen. So I have to re-enable full screen mode. Nothing major just a nuisance having to change it back every few days.

Still having the same issue as I had earlier. Game falls silent after start clicking launch. The Release Checker still goes to 100% and quits without pop-up. Have tired both the beta-patch and the official patch. Any suggestions?

There shouldn't even be a release checker if you used the patch.  I would suggest following the steps at reclaimyourgame.com to remove the SecuROM release check that might be left on your system and then trying again.  If that still fails, try reinstalling the game and patching it before you attempt to play.

Seriously, after reading the things on that website and seeing those reports, it is difficult to have faith in this game or company in the slightest...

Still having the guest account thing ._.

What the ****? Help me remove this malware off my computer so that I can play the game that I bought. I'm not using any more time or money at EA after this mistake. Great job with the DRM and everything. I haven't actually heard anything too good said of this game yet, but I still would like to play it. Yes, I've tried most of the things mentioned here.

If you had any doubts on whether or not EA wears the pants in the relationship now you know... EA makes all decisions in regards to DRM ... Sony's SecuROM (AND its release date checker in this instance) have been used by other publishers owned by EA. EA sets the DRM standards in this relationship.

Bioware just wants to make great games & I've never had DRM problems with them before. I put all the blame for this on the idiots at EA who have done this so many times.

Its not EA's DRM- EA doesn't have an in house dev team for DRM they've shopped out to Sony DADC for all their DRM needs (Or if you buy through Steam to Valve- which is the most user friendly of the DRMs imo).

Lets assume problems with the Activation.exe are connection issues possibly.

Try this

Ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

:)

You're still treating EA and BioWare as separate entities.  They aren't.  Also, don't forget that BioWare pretty much invented the authenticate-on-play model with the NWN premium modules and that they tried for a much worse scheme with ME1 than what we got with DA2.  BioWare is just as guilty as anyone in this.

Its not EA's DRM- EA doesn't have an in house dev team for DRM they've shopped out to Sony DADC for all their DRM needs (Or if you buy through Steam to Valve- which is the most user friendly of the DRMs imo).

That isn't true.  There are two layers of DRM on Dragon Age II.  The first is a release check that was patched out in v1.01.  The release check is part of the SecuROM DRM suite and that was made by Sony DADC.  The second layer of DRM is the authentication check and this DRM is made by EA.  This second layer of DRM is what's giving me and many others a lot of trouble.

Lacan:  it's not a connection issue.  Your advice didn't work for me.

Either the way, the question of when it will be fixed or patched out still remains, with little updates.

1.  BioWare is EA.
2.  SecuROM is used for the Release Control.  The authentication program is a second layer of DRM and that is most definitely made by EA.

Let me ask you this...is Bungie part of microsoft?

Answer is no they are independent studio that choose to work under Microsoft. Same thing for bioware they agreed to the buyout. Doesn't mean they are the same thing.

Bungie needed a publisher so they went to microsoft.. Bioware needed one so they went to EA :P

Bungie is now an independent, privately-held company.  Prior to that, Microsoft was the majority owner of the studio and yes, they were very much Microsoft.

"On June 19, 2000, soon after Halo's preview at Electronic Entertainment Expo 2000, Microsoft announced that it had acquired Bungie Software and that Bungie would become a part of the Microsoft Game Division under the name Bungie Studios."

EA is the majority owner of BioWare.  BioWare's co-founders are vice presidents of EA.  All of the employees receive their paychecks from EA.  BioWare is EA.  Don't bother to separate the two.
