there is no real official solution for the admin error...and its obvious that the error message has nothing to do with the problem (you are admin but you still get the error^^)

i guess the only way to start the game now would be to try another system...or get yourself the cracked dragonage2.exe data

i dont believe that there will be any help soon from the official side...dunno what bioware does right now (because suddenly they stopped posting here...maybe that was when their game was sold 1 mil. times within 2 weeks)
and EA...its really just ridiculous what "help" you get from their side (directing ppl to the "technical SELF help forum"...yeah thats just weak!...but hey if there are only 1000 customers with issues right now...and over a million who can play the game...why should they care?!)

Will the main note at the top get updated when they have a new patch, or do I have to page through all this to find a newer update.

They'll probably make a new sticky topic for the 1.02 patch.  They might put one in the announcement board, too.  That said, they refuse to say whether or not this patch fixes the problems we're all having, so it might not really matter anyway.

Hi ... I've been watching this forum for a while now trying the suggestions that have been posted and I want to say thank you to those who've taken the time and patience to post valuable information. I have appreciated all the suggestions to try and knowing that others share my frustration. (BTW ... my frustration includes my son who is able to play the game and gleefully tells me so ... repeatedly ... sigh ...)

For what it's worth:
WinXP with SP3
9800GT 1GB
2GB RAM
2.40 GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core

My problem ... the administrator issue

I've raised the issue with EA ... I found them polite and helpful but some of the responses seemed a little canned and appeared to ignore information that I'd previously supplied. I suspect though that the people responding are doing the best they can with the information they've been given so Andre and Paddy thanks for your efforts.

Some of the suggestions that I've tried include:
WMI rebuild
Creating a new admin user (though I am already admin);
Checking the BIOS;
Video drivers (latest stable and beta);
Checking sound drivers;
Clearing temp;
Killing background tasks;
Beta patch
Released patch
Reinstalled the game
Checked DxDiag

The ones I didn't try related to Win7 (... call me lazy).

I have the awc.dll error. Without the 1.01 patch, the release date checker starts, gets to around 80% then stops, after which the 'awc.dll load failed' error pops up. With the 1.01 patch no date checker starts; the error comes up immediately.

Funnily enough, I had recently reformatted, and Dragon Age 2 worked fine before. I cannot identify what might be the problem though. I'm running WinXP (32bit) with service pack 3, .net framework 4, and I have all the latest video drivers. I am also definitely the admin.

We've been over this.  It's not UAC.

1.  You only need to be an administrator to install the game.  Any user, except the actual Guest account, should be able to play it.
2.  You could log in as the actual Administrator account and it still won't work.

Thanks Lacan82 but UAC was introduced in Vista ... I'm running WinXP ... same reason "run as administrator" won't work.

That said ... I agree with Seifz ... admin should run it ... even Win7.

Someone on this forum commented that it's difficult to code software for such a variety of hardware. I agree and I have some sympathy for Bioware/EA in this regard but that is the market they are in. They won't get everything right first up and IMHO that's OK.  A patch that takes a little longer than expected is unfortunate but OK.  But as I look back through this forum I see people who have multiple games registered in their profile ... I believe they deserve an occasional one or two line status report from Bioware ... and that's sadly missing.

Also, there are some bright people in this and other forums but no resolution and I think that says something.

I suspect that my problem will "magically" disappear with the next patch ... and I'm cool with that.

Not everyone is going to have the same problem as you. So how about instead of being so negative towards people that are trying to help other you just keep quiet.

Bah, regular users should be able to run it.  Running software as an administrator is generally a bad idea.  That's precisely why they introduced UAC in Windows Vista.  It's for security.

Don't have sympathy for them.  The game itself is perfectly able to run on systems experiencing the "guest account" error.  The error is within the EA DRM software, not the game.  In other words, you're being locked out of the game that you legally purchased because of DRM software that was cracked by pirates before the game was even released.  And it's been a month!

As far as I'm concerned, we should be compensated the cost of the game.

They charge $60 for the retail copy... I think they are more then compensated for the difficulty of programing for the different hardware possible.

I have to agree once more with Seifz. It is really frustrating that the game won't run on are pretty standard configurated PCs. Yes, I get it that it is impossible to code for every conceivable combination of MB, chipset, graphics and sound card, but c'mon, EA! In nearly 30 years of computer gaming (started in 1982 with a C64 and copy of "Suspended", but I digress), I have never encountered such a frustrating combination of crappy DRM and blatant disregard for paying customers. BTW, I have three computers in the house, all running Win 7 64-bit. The game runs fine on 2 (my son and I each purchased our own copy) of 3 boxes, but on the third (my own PC) I get the "Cannot run on guest account" error. I have tried everything posted on this forum short of reformatting my hard drive and performing a clean install of Windows.

 actually i take back what i said before about buying the xbox version. After reading more posts on this forum its my recommendation that that this game not be purchased at all in fact dont even support bioware since they are not supporting us with these issues. Call me negative and what ever but i work hard for my money and i was a big fan of DAO (wich i enjoyed on xbox) so i recommended this garbage to several of my friends and spent 60 bucks on it my self. you are crooks bioware i either want my money or a copy that works and i dont want to do any work to get it i did my work and i payed their price and i should be playing my game.and so should you all. i knew i should have bought fallout                LONG LIVE BETHESDA!!!!!!!!

...Still not working.

I am gonna wait for the 1.02 patch arriving at Steam, then I will test. If this is still not working, I will have a look into "other" options, like so many of you have suggested.... To exchange that EXE file.

For those with the awc.dll errors, I think it is linked to Adobe Air. It usually comes with the pdf reader and appears to be necessary for connecting the game to EA and whatnot. The game seems to work for me now.

On W7Pro and had the "C++ Runtime Error" that many did on DA:O. Could not do Config or Play. Fix for me was enabling the "super secret Administrator" via Control Panel / Admin Tools / Local Users and doing Config and Play/Register logged in as Admin.

I am among those who get 15 seconds into game play and then crash with a message the Dragon Age has stopped working. I am really sad because I have been waiting to buy this game for what seems like ever. I have watched countless numbers of friends enjoying and loving the game and I finally get it...I get my water bottle and I sit down...and nothing. So disappointed. I hope this situation is fixed soon.

Same. Patch 1.02 doesn't fix the guest account error and I still can't play my game 35 days after release. I still think that anyone in our position should be entitled to reimbursement for the cost of the game.
