I'm pulling my hair out over an error I keep getting. What's funny is the only time I get this particular error is during Act II when I try to go to the wounded coast AT ALL. Act I is fine, Act III is fine. Act II is no bueno what so ever. Anyhow I get this garbage: Unhandled exception at 0x00000000 in DragonAge2.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation. It's really making me crazy because I can't complete the "Long Road" Quest or the other quest to find the lost Qunari patrol. Any thoughts?

I have a proliant ML115 running windows XP home edition.

I've been getting the unable to run as guest error.

I've tried...

Patch 1.02
Rename executable folder
I cannot run as administrator as the admin account is reserved for safe mode in XP home
I have several profiles, all local administrator

I even tried to go in as safe mode / administrator and install the game, then run from a local admin account - this also failed

Had a chat session with Bioware - they said a patch was being released soon for this issue - not heard anything though.

I'm running out of ideas - Are there any other things I could try? Not sure if patch 1.03 will fix the issue.

Thanx.

I wanted to give DA2 another shot (downloaded several mods which tailored the experience to something closer to what I wanted) and the game won't launch form the launcher. I will get the menu, and I can click and use configure, uninstall, etc. but clicking Play will do nothing.

I have an Intel Core 2 CPU @ 2.13, 2.13 Ghz, 4.00 GB, 32bit Vista, with a GForce 8800GTX.

This is a retail SE version of DA2. Also, the 1.02 patch, so I would think it does not relate the issue the 1.1 patch ought to have fixed (according to the major issues thread). Ought to have clarified.

1. Complete an actual problem report

2. Recognize that there's not now, nor has there ever been, a patch numbered "1.1"

3. Recognize that nVIDIA graphics drivers are extremely problematic, most particularly in this game.

Excuse me? Ah, I see what you mean. Hold on.

Yes, terrible typo on my part. I should obviously be flogged and burned.

Let's try again. Look at the top of the forumj. There are many threads that stay there for reference, to help the members. One of them starts with "Before anything else". It is very useful, no matter who wrote it. It outlines a version of a problem report that covers what needs to be covered, whatever game is involved, when the forum is based on a Self-Help concept, as this one is.

Second, the cat 'o nine tails will consist of a plate of noodles, or such similarly threatening material as appropriate.

Third: you have an elderly video card, and nVIDIA is among the least supportive of companies when you aren't updating within a couple of years. They simply don't make it a habit to keep old games and old graphics cards covered by new drivers.

For many games, a retrograde driver rollback is often necessary. Whether this catches your own card in the incompatibility situation remains to be seen.

I thought I did use it right? The magic computer box always gives me trouble. I vastly prefer it as a gaming platform to consoles, but to say I'm technologically illiterate would be offensive to the people who actually are.

It could. It makes sense that it might be the drivers, as I recently upgraded them as I had an error with TW2. With the new drivers, the visual catastrophe that was going on ended. But I never tried to replay DA2 after.

I tried running DA2.exe independent of the launcher at I get a "C:\\Program Files\\Dragon Age 2\\bin_ship\\DragonAge2.exe.

As a more general issue, would it be worth my time to upgrade my graphics card&processor, or since that means swapping out the mother board, would it be cheaper just to get a new CPU?

The interface used for Graphics cards has only undergone a couple of relatively minor upward evolutions.  The basic PCI-e(16) video graphics bus and add-on slot have remained upwardly and downwardly compatible throughout the past six years, so whatever PCIe card you upgraded to would still work, although a few brand new features offered via the minor upgrades wouldn't be available.

More than anything, in the time since your card was top of the line, your old power supply has been gradually losing its efficiency.  Fans and power supplies are two computer components that do wear out with age, while much else inside of computers can last for decades, with proper care.  Power supplies, even very good ones (and most of them are no so very good, actually), will deteriorate at an average of 10% of capacity per year.

The newest cards are far more efficient than the older ones, but there are potentially higher performances than ever that are now available (whether needed for very much, is a moot point, however).

Give us a target budget and an idea of the kind of performance you have in mind, and if the two aren't mutually exclusive, someone here can probably suggest some ideas.  Don't be impatient, though.  I haven't been busy, but I think that I'll be attending to RL stuff most of the evening.  It's a summertime weekend, and few members are on hand.  Just be patient.

Sounds good. I'm going to think about the sort of thing I'd look for and how much I can afford to spend and bring it up. Maybe on the off-topic forum?

I fixed the problem, though. Downloading the 2008 (replacing the 2005) Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable allowed me to play the game, and now I have smoother performance than before.

If you are just going for somewhat newer and faster, a power supply like thiis one should be plenty adequate:

www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx

That's a 450 watt Fortron for $55.

Next, here is a very good deal on a video graphics card:

www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx

That's a Sapphire HD 5770, for $95, after the rebate.

Reporting that patch 1.03 has fixed the admin/guest account error (at least for me, under WinXP).

Wonder what the issue was?

Hi!

Got DA2 on my Macbook Pro a few days ago, it worked totally fine until today...
even with the DLC (black emporium).
Now all of a sudden I get this "AWC.dll- error ... Please reinstall." message every time I try to run the game. I reinstalled it twice and I also tried the account-with-admin-rights-thing but that didn't help either.

I'm really sorry, I know this question has come up like a bazillion times, but... anybody out there who knows how to handle this on Mac?

I would suggest trying the Mac support forum.

Every time this sort of thing comes up, and I peek into the local Social Forum Mac place, it will be deader than last week's leftover ( I don't know, what spoils fast? I hate it when my memory only throws up half of something like that).

Anyway, whatever the rest of the saying was supposed to be, the Mac forum for DA2 is not very lively.  I would suggest that Apple surely has forums somewhere?

Just a stab in the dark here, but have you updated to patch 1.03?  Also, are you running the PC version in bootcamp or are you running the Mac version in Mac OS?

Edit: @Gorath:  Wow, even the crickets are silent in the Mac forums here! :(

That I have not !!

I have read every little post in this thread since the launch of this game, and there are no way to get it started without replacing the game EXE file to the first version of the game.

I pre ordered the game and had problems from the first install of the game (loooong time ago), then I managed to start the game when I replaced the EXE files BUT that I say, I thought that the problem should been fixed in the latest update.

But it didnt !!

No one here is clairvoyant. If you don't want advice from the few gamers who do drop in when not working or involved in outdoor activity, you should not waste space in the forum. This isn't anyone's complaints department. EA handles that.
