Hi,

Have an instance of EV#53095 - "Dragon Age has encountered a problem and needs to close". This happens after the initial video (showing EA/Bioware logos) finishes.

System information:
- Game purchased through Steam.
- Sony Vaio VPCZ12M9E
- Win 7 Professional 64-bit Service Pack 1
- Core i5 @ 2.4Ghz
- 4.0 GiB RAM
- nVidia GT330M (switchable with onboard Intel GMA)

Some further information:
- Dragon Age 2 demo (also from Steam) runs without issue.
- nVidia driver version: 8.16.11.8880, dating from 2010-01-19
- I'm unable to install updated drivers for my graphics card as Sony have made some customisations to enable the dynamically switchable graphics. The reference driver installer downloaded from nvidia.com does not detect any compatible hardware.

UPDATE: this appears to be DX11 related. Disabling DX11 support has allowed me to play the game.

Thanks,

This is a major setback for Bioware indeed, all I'm asking is to play your game, why in the saggy bottoms of the Drowned Lands does it have to be sooo hard???

Installed the game will not launch for me. The release date check gets to 100% then closes and nothing happens. I have tried to run the game with the beta drivers without the beta drivers, in Directx 9 and 11, with and without the high texture pack and all combinations of those things. My antivirus is Avast but I did try it with that off. Allways gives the same result

Windows 7 64 Bit
AMD x6 3.2
AVGA GTX 460 SE
4GB DDR3 Ram
Avast Anti Virus
Dragon Age 2 Retail Copy Physical Disk

Same problem as a few. Press play.... nothing at all.
For those with this problem  as I had this is what I did to fix it.

[qoute]Whist Darkblade wrote...

Problem: Game installed fine. After clicking play on the Launch screen, the release check supposedly finished, the screen went black for about 3~4 seconds and returned to the desktop

****SOLUTION (Windows 7 and probably vista)*******
1.) BETA UPDATE!!!!!!!!!! Either ATI or Nvidia. I have ati so im not 100% sure about nvidia, but if you do not have BETA 11.4 DA2 will not work!!!!! When installing the CCC (catalyst control center, turn off any virus programs and run in admin just in case, really shouldnt be a big deal)

1b)Make sure you have either DX 9, 10, 11

2.)Install game with virus protection off, and with an account that HAS ADMINISTRATOR PRIVILEGES, "run as administrator" is not the same thing. Check if your account has the privileges. (Control PanelUser Accounts and Family SafetyUser Accounts, --> if your account doesnt say administrator under it, make an account that does, or do the following to enable defualt admin accoun (if your account is admin goto 3):
Right Click on "My Computer"
-->"manage"
When the computer management screen comes up  click on "Local Users and Groups" in the left tab pane.
Click on "Users"
Right Click on "Administator"
Un-check (if it is checked) "Account is disabled"
Create a password (i think the defualt password is "admin")
Re-start
Log on as adminstrator

3.)Install DA2 (make sure virus protection is off, preferably UAC as well (User Account Controls), but not as critcal as turning off virus protection)
4.) Manually Add firewall exception( Even though the installer will do it)

5.) Re-start

6.)Log back on as administrator

7.)Make sure you have an active internet connection. (Release date check for some reason check some server on the web, instead of checking your pc clock???)

8.)Run Launcher (Click on cd drive, desktop icon, etc....)

9.)click "play"

---At this point for those who had errors with starting the game(as in it would not start at all) after an possibly succsesfull release date check, should be ok and good to go. Just complete the EA activation and youre golden

*****NOTE****** I CANT STRESS HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO HAVE THE MOST RECENT VIDEO DRIVERS IS. It has gotten to the point where im almost sure that if you dont have the beta drivers (at least for ati) then DA2 will not launch no matter what DX version you have.

UPDATE [March 10, 9:45pm MST]:
Some workarounds and user fixes are now available. These may not work in all cases and, as we've been unable to reproduce many of these issues internally, the bulk of our information remains user-reported. That said, if this information helps get you unstuck, please spread the word. Likewise, if the fixes don't help or if you have new solutions, please continue adding to this thread. Thanks for your help and patience - we know how frustrating it must be and we're frustrated by these issues too - we'd much rather you were in-game and playing than battling with the launch process.

:( EV#52959 – Some are getting “The application will not run on a Windows
guest account or an account with insufficient privileges” error,
regardless of Admin status.
  • We've succeeded in reproducing this internally but have not yet identified a fix. Some users have had this issue disappear but their fixes don't appear to be reproducible. We're continuing to work on this.
:wizard: EV#52957 – Some are getting a “Dragon Age II has stopped working” error
  • This issue appears to be related to graphics drivers and should fix itself if you install the latest ATI or Nvidia beta drivers. For more info about graphics drivers, see the DX11 thread - http://social.biowar...0/index/6420212
:wizard: EV#52973 – Some are getting a AWC.dll error
  • This appears to be due to computers having an outdated version of the Windows .NET Framework. If you perform a Windows Update, there should be an update to upgrade to .NET
Framework 4. Grab that, and we believe that this issue will correct itself.
:wizard: EV#53092 – Some are getting a black popup that disappears immediately.
  • We believe this is related to interference from anti-virus software. Users are reporting that the issue resolves if you turn off all anti-virus software as well as your Windows firewall and then reinstall.
:wizard: EV#53093 – Some are gettting partway through the release check progress bar, then crashing.
  • User reports suggest that this has to do with Administration privileges. Under Windows 7, you will need to run an elevated command prompt (basically run cmd.exe as
administrator). Then you have to enable the hidden built-ina dministrator account for Windows 7 using the following command prompt: "C:\\windows\\system32>net user administrator active:yes"  ...Then log off of your account and log into the built-in administrator account where Dragon Age II should now run successfully. If you need more detailed instructions on the built in administrator go here - http://www.sevenforu...le-disable.html ...Windows Vista is essentially the same process - see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555910
:wizard: EV#53094 – Some are failing silently after pressing Play.
  • User reports suggest that it might be tied to interference from AVG or other anti-virus software. Other reports suggest it might be related to graphics drivers. At this point it remains unclear.
:alien: EV#53095
- Some are getting a "Dragon Age II has encountered a problem and needs
to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." error
  • This may be a one-off. We haven't seen further reports of this. If you're blocked by it, please post to let us know.
:wizard: EV#53198 - Some are getting a "The version of the file is not compatible with the version of windows your running" error undow Windows Vista 64-bit
  • This is a new one. User reports suggest that it might be tied to interference from AVG or other anti-virus software, however.
:wizard: Some are
successfully getting through release control but hitting the DX11 issues
immediately upon launch. Some can’t access the launcher, however,
and therefore can’t drop their settings down to DX9.
  • Definitely grab the latest ATI and Nvidia beta drivers, as described in the DX11 thread - http://social.biowar...0/index/6420212 ...Turn your settings down to DirectX9 if you can. If you can't run the launcher or config utility, there is a DX11 line in the DragonAge.ini file which you can set to UseDirectX11Renderer=0 - it doesn't exist until you run the game, however. Depending on when you're failing, you may not have an *.ini file to edit.

I uninstalled my anti virus, turned off my firewall and reinstalled the game. I've still got these issues.

The issue isn't with the antivirus, it's the DRM you've included to stop legitimate customers from playing the game they payed for.

Agreed. It has to be software related. I have no anti virus enabled and it still won't get pass this.

As I said, I know you're frustrated and so are we. We're definitely working on the issue on our end and have some further fixes and solutions pending. In the meantime, the workarounds proposed here are ones that have worked for some users - I've highlighted them in the interest of getting as many people unstuck as quickly as possible. I'm sorry that the workarounds aren't helping in your particular case.

Honestly, a 'sorry' doesn't exactly cut it when I've payed $90 for a game that I can't even play or return for a refund.

I'm sure I can speak for most people here when I say that we didn't come into this expecting a completely polished game with no bugs, that's not realistic. Expecting the game to simply run though, that is a reasonable expectation.

Someone dropped the ball, that's highly evident from the multitude of complaints about it not launching at all.  I've bought many games where it hasn't been optomized, or it contained many bugs and performance issues, but this is the only game i've ever bought where it hasn't run at all. Bioware games were an absolute treat and something I looked forward to greatly, so it's sad that this has plummeted to become of the lowest moments in my gaming hobby.

I know you guys will release a patch eventually, but what until then? Does EA or Bioware have any plans to make it up to the legions of customers they've dissapointed? Playing this game was to be the highlight of my weekend but I guess it won't be now.

@Rob: Appreciate that the team is still working hard at this. :P

Edit:

If I may, I would like to provide a similar scenario to what we're enduring here (at least on the consumer end).

It's like you come home with a brand new movie to watch, a shiny DVD, only to realise once you go to put it into the player that the cashier forgot to remove the security lock on the case. An unintentional and unfortunate oversight, but an inconvenient one.

Seriously, who wants to go allll the way back to the shop with the DVD and receipt in hand, stand in line a second time waiting for service, then return home again so you can enjoy the movie you wanted to watch last night (and had popcorn and drinks and maybe even friends over for)?

But I would like to state I'm looking for a consumer ombudsman to complain to right now.

I don't know if this will fix it but your drivers are out of date. You need the 267.24 BETA drivers. Report back and let us know if that fixed it.

Thanks!
