I should note that once you max out rival/friend; for anyone you will not get or lose any more points with that person. 

In the interest of a few people, I've decided to write this up for those who need info and don't have the guide. Its short and to the point and with little spoilage. I'll warn if its high in spoilage but most is just names of quests. {PLEASE remeber that this is from the guide; if you find that something isn't true please note me so that I can change it! I'm starting to think who-ever wrote the guide rushed it and didn't fully explore the rival/friend system.  I will only change it if you have proof and links to vids are good proof.}

So sorry to all who like her, but she is NOT romancable. I have a feeling though if you beg enough someone will make a mod for this. I have found a heart option for Aveline but the line didn't feel like a flirt more so of a " I really care for this person and think of them as family"

So sorry once more; he is NOT romanceable. However, just like with Aveline I have little doubt that he will be mod romancable in time. It seems you can find a heart option for varric if you bring him into the fade and forgive him after words. Hrolfgar83 Found a heart option for him by doing this. Just keep in mind that he still can't be romanced.

To complete a full romance with Anders, you must satisfy the following requirements. {According to Jules4274876 you can romance Anders at the start of Act 3 and compelte it, if you don't flirt with before then}

1: Reach 50% friendship or rivalry, Then complete his Questioning Beliefs mid-stage relationship conversation during Act 2.

2: Flirt with Anders at any point before or during Questioning Beliefs. If you don't, the romance cannot start.

3: During Questioning Beliefs Anders will intimate that that a nocturnal visit is forthcoming. Returning to Hawke Estate in the evening at any point before the end of Act 2 will then trigger his arrival at the house. Flirt with him to begin the romance. In the conversation that follows, invite Anders to live with Hawke.

4:  Finish his remaining companion quest (including the delivery of his gift, the Tevinter Chantry Amulet) and any ambient dialogues that crop up. You must also reach a full 100% friendship or rivalry.

5: You must side with the mages in The Last Straw {highlight to read spoilage} (and naturally, spare his life) and speak to him in the Gallows Prison to complete the romance.

To see a romance with Merrill through to its conclusion, you must satisfy the following requirements.

1: Reach 50% friendship or rivalry, and flirt with Merrill at least once before or during the Questioning Beliefs mid-point relationship conversation in Act 2.

2: After Questioning Beliefs has finished, Merrill will visit the Hawke Estate in the evening if her friendship or rivalry level remains at least 50% in either direction. Flirt with her to initiate the romance and invite her to move in.

3: You must then reach 100% friendship or rivalry, complete her companion quest, give both gifts, speak to her in any ambient conversations that arise, then-finally-complete the Friend or Foe dialogue.

4: If you are on the rival path, you will need to ally Hawke with the mages to guarantee that the romance reaches its optimum conclusion. On the friendship path, you can still side with the templars and complete the romance by
convincing Merrill that the choice is not Hawke's to make: pick the "Anders tied our hands" option. Finally, speak with her in the Gallows Prison or Gallows Courtyard (during the Last Straw) to complete the romance.

To sweep Isabela off her feet (despite her apparent disinterest in such an outcome beyond a purely physical interpretation of the phrase), you must complete the following objectives.

1: You have to be on the friendship path to complete the romance with isabela, though this isn't necessary for the first steps. She will sleep with Hawke no matter the state of their relationship.

2: Flirt with the Rivaini during the Isabela's Ongoing Search companion quest, available from the start of Act 2. This will cause Isabela to make a random visit to Hawke Estate at night during the events of Act 2. Flirt again to sleep with her. In the following dialogue, you must ask why Isabela is hesitant to fall in love, then explore the all "investigate" options (as denoted by the ? icon).

3: Ensure that Isabela returns after To Catch a Thief.

4: The final steps are to find and bestow both gifts, reach 100% friendship, then begin the Questioning Beliefs final-stage relationships conversation. When Isabela says the line that begins with "Now that I have my ship...", reply with "I'd like that". Last, but not least, converse with her in the Gallows Prison or Gallows Courtyard in The Last Straw to complete the romance.

To see a romance with Fenris through to its conclusion, you must satisfy the following requirements.

1: Reach 50% friendship or rivalry, then flirt with Fenris during the Questioning Beliefs mid-stage relationship conversation. If the friendship or rivalry level remains at least 50% Fenris will subsequently visit the Hawke Estate if you return at night. Flirt with him to trigger the romance. The next step is to ask him to move in. You can choose to say he can stay with you but he WILL NOT move in. David Gaider comfirmed this "Just FYI: No, Fenris never moves in with you. That's not a bug."

2: Complete remaining companion quest and dialogues, give him both gifts , reach 100% friendship or rivalry, then complete the Questioning Beliefs final-stage relationship conversation before the start of The Last Straw.

3: If you are on the rivalry path, you must ally yourself with the templars. The guide book got it wrong. 100% Rivalry Fenris will side with Hawke in defending the mages. aimo_ahmed tested it and recorded the footage (It's around 100 megs, so it can be a slow download). If you are on the friendship path, you can convince Fenris to stay if you choose to support the mages. I assume you can convice Fenris to stay wih you whatever you choose. Speak with him at the Gallows Prison or Gallows Courtyard in The Last Straw to complete the romance.


SEBASTIAN ROMANCE [smilie]../../../../images/forum/emoticons/love.png[/smilie][smilie]../../../../images/forum/emoticons/heart.png[/smilie]
Though it may seem unlikely, it is possible to win Sebastian's heart. To achieve this feat, take the following steps.

1: While all other potential love interests happily swing either way, he is resolutely heterosexual: only female Hawke has any hope of success.

2: The second requirement is equally pivotal: you must never flirt with another character at any point in the story.
{… this could be harder than it sounds…}

3: The remaining steps are to achieve 100% friendship/rivalery and complete Sebastain's quests. Flirt with the Starkhaven exile both before and during the Questioning Beliefs final-stage relationship conversation to have him suggest an unconventional partnership
{Em if you are confused like I was Seb IS the Starkhaven exile. Sorry to those who were confused by my comment here early. At the time I didn't know he called himself that.}

4: The execution of {Highlight to read spoilage} Anders {Maybe the guide got this wrong too *hopes* If any one feels up to testing it out I would be grateful} in The Last Straw is the penultimate step required to complete the romance. A conversation with Sebastian at the Gallows Prison or Gallows Courtyard will lead to the conclusion you seek. {Don't tell me your hearts didn't sink when you read this… Cause mine did and made me
dislike him kinda. I wonder if I will have the heart to execute him just to be with Seb…}

Jaws_Victim Brought up the gifts that are needed for this and also found a half done list for them as well. So here is a finished list of where you can find the gifts. Please note that Klace wrote most of this I have just add in what they missed. >_> Actully I've only put it in abc order and actully only added Beth's and Carver's items everything else is done by Klace. So don't forget to give thanks to Klace for the list.

Gifts are optional, you do NOT need them to complete the romance, they are just an extra boost to friend/rival.

Also I've noted that there is only one that say a time of day for location. I'm going to guess that the rest can be found at anytime.

Anders:
Act 2: Tevinter Chantry Amulet: In a box during Fenris' personal quest "A Bitter Pill".


Aveline:
Act 2: The Shield of The Knight Herself: The exit of Varnell's Refuge in the quest "Offered and Lost".


Bethany:
Act 1: Portrait of Your Mother: Amell Estate Cellar, in a chest in the storeroom, during the "Birthright" quest.


Carver:
Act 1: Tobrius's Documents: Amell Estate Cellar, in a chest in the storeroom, during the "Birthright" quest.


Fenris:
Act 2: The Book of Shartan: A sack in the elven alienage. (Found only at night!)
Act 3: Blade of Mercy: In chest during "Best Served Cold" at the Secret Meeting Place.


Isabela:
Act 2: A Wooden Ship: Smugglers Cut Cave during the Blackpowder Courtesy quest in a container.
Act 3: A Rivaini Talisman: Found in disused passage. Access by manhole in Docks at night. It's in a container
on a platform near the zone exit (the one not near the shop). {thanks to senorfuzzylips for finding it}


Merill:
Act 2: Wooden Halla: You can buy it from Ilen's shop at the Sundermount Dalish Clan.
Act 3: Memento of The Dalish: Found on Leader Thief body in Sundermount during "A Murder of Crows".

I never got the "Anders tied our hands" option and was still able to complete the Merrill romance supporting the Templars

OMG~!!! I love you. Actually my Lady Hawke loves you. I kept wondering just how to go about the rivalry romance so it helps out a lot to know I need 50%. Good. I have to ****** him off even more now. It's also awesome for me because I can make him my rival now, romance him and side with the mages at the end which is what I wanted to do. Brilliant!

So Seb is a LI. I was not aware of that. I would be more excited if I had the guts into killing "the other character" to complete his romance. There's no way I could, but I kinda like Seb. Ugh~ I can worry about that later in my second playthrough.

Also for Anders it seems it doesn't matter what path you choose or does it?

I only know how it works with Fenris currently,with him you keep siding with the mages. I guess with Anders you side with the Templars?

Opposite. Fenris will support Templars because his master was an evil mage. Anders will support Mages.

panamakira: For Anders I don't think it really matters if he is rival or friend both ways you can get a romance with him. At least that is what the book has lead me to believe.

Jaws_Victim is right Fenris will clash with all and any mages and will side with Templars; the book even says its best to leave Fenris behind if you choose to side with mages during mage/templars quest. Unless you want him to be rival...

Its sad about all the clashing personalities; cause I wanted to have Fenris, Anders, and Seb in my party.  I now see that will be highly unlikely to work. I'm more then likely going to be taking Anders and one of the other two but never all three... poo

Ok first it needs to be at night then just as you come down the stairs take a left it should be right there NOT in the little outcove but just before it.

As far as I know no, in fact being a mage will make things harder for you. Even more so if you have high rivalry.

Another question is the 50% and moving in thing. I did the personal quest with that mage lady and Fenris pinned my mage against the wall, and...yeah...anyways, I have him at 100% friendship, it looks. What part is the mid-way for the Questioning Beliefs bit? Cause got where Isabella visited Fenris, talking about tax collector but that was basically right after I entered Act 2, of course (I am really wishing I had gotten the bloody guide now XD)

so question, can you get a jealousy dialouge? similar in DAO when you unlocked a romance for several characters at one time or does starting a romance with one character block you from starting it with another?
