Sorry if this has been answered, but seven pages is a lot to pick through and I've tried to skim as much as I could: I'm pursuing Merrill (seems to be a popular choice around here), but the path has stopped dead. I'm in Act 2, I've done questioning beliefs with Fenris and Isabella (but not Anders, oddly enough) and it said the quest was complete. Merrill's friendship is well over 50%, I've given her the gift from the Dalish merchant, and I definitely flirted with her in the past.
Does this just happen automatically or does something trigger it? Or did I somehow unknowingly un-trigger it? Oh, I also did the plot with Feyrindil and, without spoiling anything, took her into the Fade with me.

Probably. Doubt they'll comment on it though. If they do I'd get nervous hahah. LIs: Now equipped with the all seeing eye.

LOL yes!

That was great.

Me and my bf played through at the same time (his on PC, mine on PS3) and he finished with Isabella, I believe.

I wonder how the Rivalmances go, do you still get to sleep with them?

No one has mentioned a difference in that area. Definately trying it next run though~

2: Flirt with the Rivaini during the Isabela's Ongoing Search companion quest, available from the start of Act 2. This will cause Isabela to make a random visit to Hawke Estate at night during the events of Act 2. Flirt again to sleep with her. In the following dialogue, you must ask why Isabela is hesitant to fall in love, then explore the all "investigate" options (as denoted by the ? icon).
{Really? You have to flirt with someone else to get her to notice you?}

Just as a side note, the "Flirt with the Rivaini" line refers to Isabele.  She's a Rivaini.  You don't have to flirt with someone else to get her to notice you; just flirt with her when you get the chance.  Just wanted to make that clear for anyone else like me who's reading this for the first time.

Ah yeah I just got done play for like 9 hours straight and had a Varric call her Rivaini... I'll fix that in a moment. You know; who ever wrote this guide is really starting to tick me off... The walk through is pointless but the quests list is helpfull because it tells you what happens. And gives good idea of who to take with you but I've found that it also doesn't always ring true... *sighs*

Sorry if it's been asked before but I didn't wanna scroll through 7 pages trying to find it so my question is this, what are Merhill's gifts and where do you find them?

The gifts and where to find them are in the first post; at the bottom...

Wait, so you're saying that one can't romance Isabela as a Rival? Oh, crap! Image IPB Image IPB ....

I guess so, that is what the book says. But the person who wrote the book could be wrong its been known to happen.

It should appear later in act 2. Merrill doesn't have many flirt options until later. I think it's her questioning beliefs quest where you can finally give her a flirt telling her she's sweet or something.

Later when you return to the mansion she should show up there.

FENRIS ROMANCE:wub:<3
To see a romance with Fenris through to its conclusion, you must satisfy the following requirements.

1: Reach 50% friendship or rivalry, then flirt with Fenris during the Questioning Beliefs mid-stage relationship conversation. If the friendship or rivalry level remains at least 50% Fenris will subsequently visit the Hawke Estate if you return at night. Flirt with him to trigger the romance. The next step is to ask him to move in.

2: Complete remaining companion quest and dialogues, give him both gifts, reach 100% friendship or rivalry, then complete the Questioning Beliefs final-stage relationship conversation before the start of The Last Straw.

3: If you are on the rivalry path, you must ally yourself with the templars. If you are on the friendship path, you can convince Fenris to stay if you choose to support the mages. Speak with him at the Gallows Prison or Gallows Courtyard in The Last Straw to complete the romance.

Are you sure about this with Fenris?  Because I saw a series of YouTube videos of a Fenris rival romance that ended with Fenris helping you side with the mages (and all the other mushy goodness that occurs in that scene).  I've also read in various places that a maxed rival Fenris will still fight with you against the templars at the end.  Just want to check, since I tend to play mage, which obviously leads to Fenris not liking me as much.

Its from the book; if you can prove it wrong then please do because I'M having hard time getting him to be friends with me... :crying:

Well I've updated the first post, changed a few errors on my part and put up a notice. The book says you have to side with the templars to keep Fenris if you are rivals. I keep hearing that this is not true. If someone could give proof of this will happily change the first post to show this.

Till then I'm off to bed... Hopefully someone will be able to give me an answer to this because its driving me nuts...

The guide book got it wrong. 100% Rivalry Fenris will side with Hawke in defending the mages. I tested it myself and recorded the footage (It's around 100 megs, so it can be a slow download).

Playing a Mage Hawke, I feel it's sweeter here than compared to siding with the Templars :)

I think so long as you have him 100% friendship he'll side with you no matter what you choose.

You don't need to give them the items to romance them. I completed the romance with Fenris without giving him anything and he didn't move in either. I had the rivalry romance. I even sided with the mages. If your friendship/rivalry is all the way up he'll still stay with you. He'll comment on it, too, but he won't leave you.

Cool, thanks a bunch. Is there any way I could've screwed this up or cut her off short of out-and-out selecting a heartbreak option?

In the interest of a few people, I've decided to write this up for those who need info and don't have the guide. Its short and to the point and with little spoilage. I'll warn if its high in spoilage but most is just names of quests. {PLEASE remeber that this is from the guide; if you find that something isn't true please note me so that I can change it! I'm starting to think who-ever wrote the guide rushed it and didn't fully explore the rival/friend system.  I will only change it if you have proof and links to vids are good proof.}

VARRIC ROMANCE:wub:<3
So sorry once more; he is NOT romanceable. However, just like with Aveline I have little doubt that he will be mod romanceable in time.

This is untrue I foudn a way to romance Varric during Act 2, If you take him into the fade with you one of the demons turns him against you and you fight. Then after the quest is over visit Varric in the Hanged Man Tavern and speak with him he apologizes and you get 1 of 3 options (I was playing a female dunno if this works for male). 2 of the options involve Forgiving him and it's one of these two options which has the Heart icon that tells you it's a Flirt/Romance option! Also I should note that I ahd Friendship up to 100% on Varric by this time. So first actual dwarf in Dragon age you can romance it seems!

You can flirt with him, but just like Aveline, you can't initiate a romance.

You sure cause I would think that having that Heart icon there for a flirt opion would mean it opens up to Romance?

I don't think anyone doubts you. Image IPB Flirting =/= romance. It obv can mean that, but not in his case.

Well it's worth exploring to be sure as it wont be the first thing the guide has gotten wrong. I took a screen shot of the dialog wheel showing the flirt option there with Varric, but damnable photobucket isn't letting me upload it right now. Their trying to tell me jpeg is a incorrect file type even though I have uploaded other jpegs in the past...

Nevermind! It just randomly starts late in Act 2 after doing X number of other missions. It's also called "Mirror Image," which misled me somewhat. Thanks to everyone who helped me out.

Okay, I'm a little bit confused here. I want to romance Fenris, but Anders is saying things like "don't tie yourself to me blah blah blah." How do I NOT get into a relationship with our favorite mage? I romanced him in my first playthrough, now I'm out for Fenris's affections. I tried to be all friendly with Anders, but then he calls me beautiful and I'm like: "NOOOO STOP ENCHANTING MEEEEE." :pinched:

It is.  After Hawke and Isabela have their night, Isabela asks if feelings are going to be in the mix.  As long as you responded, of course not, then that night is consdiered as no strings attached.  From what I see, you can experience multiple romances at once, but will be forced to choose before they will progress past a certain point.

Is it after the personal "questioning beliefs quest that Fenris is supposed to say he will stop by? I flirt with him during that entire conversation and the conversation ends with him saying something like, "We can find out another evening perhaps...". His friendship bar looks over 50 to me, but I am not positive.

edit: Nevermind, I figured it out. I hadn't done Bitter Pill yet.
