Hey guys.
Just bought DA:2, pretty fun. However, I find it really hard, even on normal. I need some quick help on builds and such. First off, I would like to know if it's better to roll archer, instead of melee. I also would require some help stats and ability wise, as of what to spend on what. Lastly, would any good tactics be necessary to keep a tank (Athenine, whatever her name is. ._.) from keeping agro?
Very sorry about the noobiness.

Melee can be a bit sketchy early on but once you have high defense or a decent tank in your party you'll be very survivable and the damage you can do when explosive striking on a target a warrior has staggered is insane.

Thanks. I guess I'll go with melee then.
Any idea on what stats I should focus on leveling?

I'm playing on normal and have been using 1dex 2cun per level, it's working pretty good so far, good damage and I haven't had any problems staying alive.

I have enough Dex to use the best weapons I find and the rest in Cun. Usually that means 2:1 Cun/Dex. I'm thinking of switching to 1:1 ratio since I've had problems with my Dexterity being a few points too low to use the best Daggers I find every few levels.

I haven't tried Archer in the final game, but I can tell you my Melee Rogue does absurd damage going into Act 3. I've seen Assassinate and Explosive Strike hits over the 5000 mark.

Looks like I'll start with 2:1 cun/dex then.
LAST QUESTION (I know, I know. Sorry for the irrelevance on this one.)
For a tank, should I just majorly level con and upgrade their armor, whilst getting taunting and agro powaaars?

You will need to give your tank some strength aswell, in order to give him/her some new weapons.

Also just a little willpower, to be sure he/she will keep up the taunting and damaging to keep the aggro.

I have found the Assassin specilization to be incredibly useful for my melee rogue. I can't remember the name of the attack, but the one where the rogue does a backhand strike with both weapons simultaneously has practically been an instakill for most enimies since I learned the skill. Explosive Strike is useful as well, especially combined with Backstab.

Assassinate is the überskill. It does freakish damage. Kills all enemies except bosses instantaneously.

Go with Shadow for second spec. It has some bonuses that increase critical damage, and the Assassinate talent deals a massive critical hit, so increasing critical damage increases that talent's damage output. Which makes it even more awesome.

And if you can accidently () bug your game and get the third spec, do that too! :D I'm joking of course, but you know, it has been known to happen....:?

You don't need to completely fill out all the melee or archer talents, and regardless of which talents you select, every rogue will have some situations where bow or melee is best, and most of the "other" (non-melee, non-archery) talents benefit both ranged and melee.

I started my first playthrough as exclusively dual wield and then I started kicking ass long distance when I found a great Act 1 bow (Swarm) and began putting points into Archery as well.

On the dual wield side, backstab, unforgiving chain, explosive strike are good to get relatively early. Later in the game, you will be doing as much damage as a backstab with your auto-attack, but backstab still allows you to teleport around short distances.

On the archery side, Pinning shot is good (disorienting shot is bugged, don't get it), Archer's lance/Punishing lance is fun, but i wouldn't put too many points into the archery tree until later in the game, even if you are focusing exclusively on archery.

The most important talent for any rogue (regardless of whether you focus more on Archery or Dual Wield) is Assassinate + Anihilate, which are both available as early as level 10 if you respec or save a tome to use as soon as you reach level 10.

Stealth, Evade and Rush are also helpful very early and throughout the game. Speed is important as well.

Since Disorienting Shot is bugged, the only way you can set up Disorient combos are with Disorienting Criticals, Fatiguing Fog + Overpowering Fog, upgraded Confuse or Shattering Shot + Smoking shot.

I seem to get the most disorients when using fatiguing/overpowering fog with the obscure upgrade added and Disorienting criticals.

Decoy looks like it would be very useful for solo fights like the Arishok duel, but I haven't gotten it yet. Blindside and any other passive abilities that increase your damage or crit damage are going to be very helpful.

I've found the most opportunities for very high Assassinate crits when rolling with two mages in the party that both have upgraded Petrify and upgraded Winter's Grasp, and at least one of them with the Hex of Torment spell.

Assassinate ... over the 5000 mark.

that is actually on the low side for Assassinate - I'm also in the beginning of Act 3 and I regularly get over 30k on bosses/elites and I've seen some screenshots of people getting 150k - 200k

Try setting up the Assassinate with the help of one or two mages in your party and the following debuffs on a target with very high health
-Mark of Death + Mark of Doom
- Brittle (via upgraded Petrify or upgraded Winter's Grasp)
- Fatiguing Fog
- Hex of Torment
- Elemental Weapons on your daggers or bow
- Deathroot toxin on your daggers or bow

I am actually playing through with a pure Archery Rogue. I'm not some uber pro or anything on the trees or builds, but I have to say, I very much enjoy the one I'm using. I took Assassin as my first specialization, and Mark of Death can do wonders for a bow. I've seen a -lot- of people saying the Archery tree is useless, but I find it very useful, for me at least. Keep in mind, I am -not- playing on Nightmare. Not yet. Speed lets me fire off arrows faster, and in the Scoundrel tree, I have Blindside to do more damage since hardly anyone ever even looks at me. I put my second Specialization Point in Duelist for the bonus to critical chance, but have not put any points in it yet. Am seriously thinking of respecializing and putting that in Shadow instead, for the passive +25% crit dmg. Not sure though, I'm doing rather well with what I already have. ^__^

I agree with grabbing Blindside. 25% extra damage for a single point is a no-brainer.
