I have not played the original dragon age, but i am very familiar w/ RPGs.  I understand class mechanics, threat, class roles etc etc....I normally play games on the highest difficulty setting, but i am having a terrible time getting anywhere on nightmare.  I have reached the part where the emissary apprentice comes out and i cant get past it.  I can get past the first wave, but my tank takes huge damage and have to use most of my potions.  I feel like i am missing something.

I have bethany set to ranged and to target whatever the tank is attacking.  I have carver set to aggressive and to attack what the tank is targeting.  My character is a rogue whom i try to control.  At the start of the fight I take control of the tank and put shield def up and go after apprentice. Then i pause and go after the other attackers one by one.  The tank needs to heal a few times and when second wave comes I am real low on potions.  I also seem to have trouble picking up all the mobs in the second wave.  i am thinking about dropping down in difficulty but i dont really want to do that if I can help it.  I feel if I can get pointed in the right direction i will be able to figure out future battles.

Thanks

Use the terrain, pull instead of rush, life is alot easier when you have all the enemy bunched together.

After I posted this I loaded an earlier save before I assigned abilities and gave Bethany a healing spell. This seemed to help a lot and I made it past that part and into the outskirts of the city. At least i am making progress now I was about ready to give up on the game.

I recommend you don't play on nightmare your first go through. You can change to nightmare anytime during the game though. Start of on normal and work your way up. especially if you haven't played dragon age before.

Another tip for nightmare. Try getting the Stonewall -> Barrier -> Stonewall chain with your tank and a mage. Your tank will be practically invincible most of the fight allowing you to AOE nuke with impunity.

1. Make sure you have a tank, preferably sword and shield. Level up means 2 con for 1 strength. Pick crowd control and defense talents for the tank.
2. Constitution should be leveled up at least 1 every two levels for your other classes. Do not forget constitution for rogues and mages!
2. The tank is for crowd control and soaking up damage so don't focus on damage for this class!
3. Focus on killing the weakest first, one at a time. Focused attack kill the enemies faster. Each one that's dead is one less attacker to worry about. Position your party so they don't FF each other. Only pull away to keep the enemies from attacking your mage. Mage falls, your party will likely wipe. Tank falls, your party will definitely wipe.
4. Pause, pause, pause.
5. Bosses have patterns. When they attack, clear the area! If they charge, get out of front!
6. Use choke points and ambush rather than get ambushed!
7. High enough level, exploit cross class combos.
8. Flank when possible with rogues.
9. Save mind blast for when you draw aggro. It's the mage's equivalent of taunt in reverse.

I will add more if I can think of any. Nightmare mode is a real blast. It's how the game should be played.
