This has to be the only thing that I hate about Dragon Age 2, and it's a good hate. It get ts me in an emotional state of RAGE! Either way, the Darkspawn taint kills my sister, forces her to become a Grey Warden (Hawke will be proud but very pissed off), or taken by the Templer's. Either millions of Darkspawn will die, or I will destroy every Templar I get a chance at killing. Take your pick.

Which did you pick? My first play through was to circle and i was mad too. I don't know making her to be Warden is good idea or bad comparing with force to be in the circle.

Later on, I understand she comes back.  What are the storyline differences between Warden Beth and Circle Conscript Beth?

Im on my second playthrough and was considering leaving her at home this time... glad I read this thread first. I was EXTREMELY angry that she died on my first playthrough. As mentioned previously by others, she was a much relied upon force in my party [one of 2 mages who can heal]. I think this time Ill go the way of the wardens, I hate that I have to lose her, but this way shes not dead.

If you leave her at home she returns to your party in the last hoo-ray in the last act. If she's a Warden she's gone for good. Take your pick.

Wrong. Only way she's gone for good is, if she dies.

Deep Roads without Anders- She dies and is gone for good(happened to me in my playthrough)

Deep Roads with Anders- Becomes a Grey Warden and comes back for the final fights in Act II and III

Stays at Home- Gets taken to the Circle and comes back for the final fight in Act III

NOW take your pick.

Me? I say WARDENS.

Only reason, I don't like the Warden one is, that it's certain death in the end. Of course it doesn't come into play during the course of the game. Though I doubt the Circle one is too great either.

Rather live one day as a lion, than hundred as a sheep.

She can really help people as a Warden. In the Circle she's just cooped up. Dead, she's....well, dead.

If shes part of the circle, she can be a mage. Study magic. Do experiments and be among like minded individuals. Being a good natured girl I can see her getting permission to leave the tower for field research.

In the circle, she doesn't have to constantly be on the run from templar all the time like she was being an apostate (a life constantly on the run is no life at all) nor be resined to a dark fate of fighting darkspawn till she finally dies like a warden. It also adds impact to the final choice at the end of the game by having your sister in the circle. Not to mention that I love the idea of fighting the Arishok in a 1 and 1 dual to the death. Perfect way to truly earn the title of Champion. Which means I don't need her available in the act 2 end fight.

On the other hand, I would always make Carver a warden. He wants to get out of mage hawke shadow and make a name for himself. Carver as a templar is just beyond unexcepable, making him an obvious enemy of his own mage brother. Plus, being a warden allows Carver to fight the very monsters that killed his twin sister. Carver might complain about it but in the end he will realize that as a warden he will have made a name for himself and found a noble purpose in life.

Theres also the fact that I can more easily except Carver coming along in the deeproads since saying no to him would simply make him hate me even more. After saying no to bring him along on such an important mission, I can't be too surprised he'd join the templars, if for no other reason than out of spite for his mage brother.

On the other hand, Bethany is a very innocent girl. Shes too soft to be brought down into the deep roads. Sure, she has great power as a mage but her innocents just makes me feel like taking the protective older brother role. And that type of person would likely leave her at home.

.............................................

I may have over thought this. LOL

Bethany was the only mage I liked and was sad I lost her as a companion to the circle.

First time I went into the deep roads I lost Carver because I didn't know to bring Anders along with at the same time. Second play through will be different.

Losing Bethany at the end of Act 1 is a pain in the ***. Like others have said she became a key part of my team, the only other mage who has healing is Anders and so your forced to use him. I really hate it honestly, Why couldn't Bethany/Carver leave the Wardens and rejoin you sooner then end game. I mean it's not like other Wardens haven't left the order or gone to do other things. I can name several off the top of my head Alistair, Anders, and "The Warden" all left for various reason depending on the situation.

You get Bethany again before the end, if she doesn't die in the deep roads

Bethany was by far my favorite squaddie.

If I could, my team would ALWAYS of been Bethany, Varric, and Isabella.

Once I lost her I switched from Aveline and Sebastian.

On my second playthrough though she is TOTALLY going to become a Warden.

I was surprised that BioWare would put in a binary character set (Beth/Carv) in this day and age of sky-high production values. A full companion character is an expensive proposition.

Then I got back from the Deep Roads and see her getting hauled off, and my reaction was, "Ohhhhhhhh." I knew there was no way around it. They took her away, because they had no intention of paying for her Act 2 and 3 content.

Originally, I was going to take her on the expedition, but I saw Mama Hawke's plea as an obvious cue from the developer and took Anders instead.

This part of the story pisses me off. What happened to having choices like other bioware games? When I told the templars "you'll take my sister over my dead body" I meant it! She was by far my favorite squad mate and as far as role playing goes I would never let a family member be taken by the templars. I've already seen mods to add her back as a usable character, hopefully bioware will see the negative feedback and give you some real choices for her. The story now is forced on you no matter what your moral compass is and I really dislike that.

MMMMM wow. This sucks. Only just discovered this. Beth was my staple Mage. That sucks so much that you lose her as a companion for large segments of the game. Anders I guess would be my back up. At lease he has a revive spell.

She became a Warden for me so I took some comfort in that she was alive at least and having her tag along at the end was fun but too little too late.
My real problem with it though is that it just felt so forced because, well, it is. I leave her, she gets dragged away and I can't do anything. I bring her, she dies or becomes a Warden.

I like tragedy in a story but really, in a game and done like this it doesn't work if you ask me. All it did was pull me out of the game for quite a while as that Homing Anvil of Destiny fell from the sky and hit her in the head.

I had her become a Warden and she does have some short but memorable lines during the final battle.

This is the first time a game had an emitional impact on me. I could feel the sorrow for a character I've gotten to known over the first twelve hours of playing -- she was always in my party. How angry I was when my save from before the expedition was overwritten by the one before the big red glowing annoyance in there.

It sucks that I lose my favorite squaddie for most of the game.

Removing someone like that for so long is laaaaaaame.

Honestly I think this game is far more interesting without having a healer in your team. And yes, I also like the longer cooldown that healing potions have now.
In DA:O virtually EVERY player had a healing mage in his party. Without one it is going to be a great challenge to come up with new tactis.
I had Bethandy in my party the whole time, too. Now that I have lost her (to the circle) I am definitely going with Merill. I don't really like Anders :)
