BETA PATCH 1.01 available now!:
http://social.biowar...0/index/6482838

This should fix this issue.   If you have applied this patch, and still have this problem, please let us know.

We have identified a problem where the game cannot save. This presents itself as three symptoms:
--You get a perpetual "saving" spinner on the right.
--Your save + load options are greyed out in the "escape menu"
--You will hang on the next transition after a save is attempted (which for most people is at the end of the blightlands, because the initial autosave is still trying to save).   If you have autosave disabled, and manually attempt to make a save, this will occur on your next transition.

This is currently occurring because the game is only utilizing one CPU - either because your machine only has one (single core machines) or your machine is only attempting to use one (multicore machines).  The game saves asynchonously (ie, on a seperate core) to allow you to keep playing while it saves, which it cannot do with only one core.

We have not seen this issue on multicore machines internally, but several forum users here have started to diagnose the problem, and I will paraphrase them here:

If you have a multicore machine, you see how many cores the game is utilizing by bringing up task manager, clicking on "Processes" then right click on "DragonAge.exe", then choose "select affinity".  If you see a single un-greyed checkbox, windows only recognizes one of your cores, regardless of what you have in your box.  Some users have reported that this was a BIOS configuration problem.  I don't have any specific details on how to address this, as it can vary wildly by machine.

If you see multiple available boxes, windows is only allocating one towards running the game - you may be able to manually select additional cores to make the game use them, alternatively, there are a couple third party applications which can instruct applications to use certain cores on launch.

I have a triple-core processor and had the
'no save' problem initially too. Then I used an outside program (CPU
Control) and found that my machine was only using a single processor to
play the game. Once I used CPU Control to 'force' the game to use
multiple processors, the saving problem went away for me... I realize
this doesn't help the folks with single core processors, but it might be
an alternative for some dual+ core gamers to waiting around for a
patch/fix...

Hi,

I've experienced the same
issue and tried some of the workarounds offered on other sites including
updating my device drivers, disabling music, setting directx to version
9 and running the DragonAge2.exe directly in stead of using the
launcher. None of this worked. Disabling autosave is pointless too since
the save spinning will still be permanent after your first manual save.

I
have Windows 7 and a Quad Core CPU and yet I experienced these issues.
So I checked my task manager > performance and saw that I only had
one CPU there. So something weird was going on. I then opened my start
> run > msconfig and went to boot > advanced options and
deselected the checkbox for 'number of processors'. Then I rebooted. Now
I have 4 CPU's in my task manager. Just tested the game and now it
works fine, even with autosave on, music enabled and Directx 11.

(NOTE:
if you do see more than one CPU under task manager > performance yet
still experience this issue, then start DA2 > press the windows
button on your keyboard OR ctrl-esc OR alt-tab to see the taskbar, then
right-click it and go to taskmanager > processes.  Right-click
DragonAge2.exe and choose "Set affinity". Then make sure 'All
processors' is selected.)

I hope this can be of some use to those of you who have a multicore CPU yet still experience this issue.

Cheers,
Oliver

(EDIT: added the 'set affinity' bit)

Thanks for the information and glad you are sorting it out. Hopefully I can play with saves in a few days or so. Also, as I suspected any users with multicore having the issues had their games and windows running with just one core all this time.

So what do you do if it denies you to set the Affinity?

Thanks for the update! I'm not too terribly upset- the Soundtrack and Origins have been keeping me plenty busy- Gives me time to get a save to upload into DA2 that I like.

Appreciate the work you guys are doing! <3

That doesn't work. Game still will use one core even if you "force" it to use multiple processors. It's not a Windows issue. It's game issue

I agree. I checked under processes as mentioned above and both of my cores are checked. It looks like Windows is running both for the game and something with the game is causing the shutdown.

Steam version, by any chance? Someone in one of the other threads reported success after telling steam to use multiple processors.

I only have a single core. Am I screwed or will the fix address single core systems as well? I wasn't sure if my system would run the game so I tried the demo before buying. The demo ran with no problems so i went ahead and bought the game. I assumed the save and load weren't activated for the demo. Sigh. :(

Update: Even though I was unable to set the Affinity I was playing on duel cores (I guess). I changed to DirectX 9 and have been playing with no problems now. I also can save my game.

I'm having this problem. It's disappointing, considering I was so looking forward to this game.

I can wait for the fix, it's just a bit disappointing that the game didn't work properly on release day. It's also kind of weird to make the game save that way when a LOT of people have single core processors that can still run a game beautifully.

In windows 7 click bottom of desktop and open task manager. Go to performance (you should see a split graph at top) and click on resource monitor. On that page click top tab monitors and select processors and make sure all three are checked. Do this with just the load screen BEFORE you click play. In the config utility switch to DirectX 9.That's all I did.

Ya it's like someone above said.. I tried the demo first to make sure it'd run smoothly on my computer first.  It runs beautifully on my computer despite single core (the demo).. So I baught the game.

I'm sure once the fix comes out it'll continue to rock.

I bought game through EA market and used EA downloader not Steam. Like I said issue is within game engine not Steam or Windows or Task Manager

So now all I am left to wonder is for BioWare's next game who is going to be the one to ask "does it work with a single core?" Assuming their next game is intended to work with one.

Same here Nas:) Demo ran great... so does the game on my 1 core... except for the save issue. I've been playing Mass Effect 2 which appears to have the same format as DA2... but I can save on the fly with ME2 on my 1 core without it hanging up.. I feel everyones pain...But lets be patient....I'm not going to buy a new pc just to play a video game...ok I did it once:P What? Oh like y'all never done it:lol:. Anywho... aside from the "save" issue.. It's a great game:)

I've also run into this problem. Definitely sucks, but I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing the endless loop and load screen horror. Here's to hoping the fix doesn't take too long. ;3;
