If you have a multicore machine, you see how many cores the game is utilizing by bringing up task manager, clicking on "Processes" then right click on "DragonAge.exe", then choose "select affinity".  If you see a single un-greyed checkbox, windows only recognizes one of your cores, regardless of what you have in your box.  Some users have reported that this was a BIOS configuration problem.  I don't have any specific details on how to address this, as it can vary wildly by machine.

hello,  Windows 7 64 Bit... has no "Select affinity" option;  its has Open File Location, End Process, Debug (Greyed Out) UAC Virtualization (greyed out), Create Dump File, Set Priority, Properties, & Go to Service(s).

Now I know exactly what your talking about, when I had Vista, I was able to do the forementioned. How do you this In OS WIN7?

This is currently occurring because the game is only utilizing one CPU - either because your machine only has one (single core machines) or your machine is only attempting to use one (multicore machines).  The game saves asynchonously (ie, on a seperate core) to allow you to keep playing while it saves, which it cannot do with only one core.

Wow.  I'm not one to complain but someone needs to get smacked over the head for this one.  Would have been nice to know when I was running the demo, smooth as silk with no problems and thinking "yeah my machine can handle this just fine."

I suppose I should start reading the minimum require specs more carefully even though it never seemed to matter much in the past.  I know it says Duo core has a min, but honestly my old P4 chip runs most of the newer stuff just fine still and I typically ignore min specs and just load up the demo to see if it'll work.  But still I gotta say, knowing how many old single core machines there are out there that are indeed very capable of running this game (runs smooth as silk on my old machine as does ME2, better than DA1 does I might add), doing things like the above comes off as, well, harebrained at best.  Your saving us, what, 5 seconds of load time?  Are we really that ADD?

It seems like a silly thing to overlook and silly reason to essentially break the whole game for a large group of customers.  Teach me to buy a game before it's been out long enough to have this stuff fixed.  <_<

I hope whatever solution is being worked on will work for us single-core folk and not just those with mult-core machines suffering from the problem.  I'm really looking forward to playing this.

Ya it's like someone above said.. I tried the demo first to make sure it'd run smoothly on my computer first.  It runs beautifully on my computer despite single core (the demo).. So I baught the game.

I'm sure once the fix comes out it'll continue to rock.

Same here Nas:) Demo ran great... so does the game on my 1 core... except for the save issue. I've been playing Mass Effect 2 which appears to have the same format as DA2... but I can save on the fly with ME2 on my 1 core without it hanging up.. I feel everyones pain...But lets be patient....I'm not going to buy a new pc just to play a video game...ok I did it once:P What? Oh like y'all never done it:lol:. Anywho... aside from the "save" issue.. It's a great game:)

I'm in the same situation . I played the demo multiple time without a problem besides the save option being disabled . Now with the full game it'e the same scenerio ( plays great but no save option ) maybe they forgot to remove the demo code , lol

All kidding aside I've been playing for many hours now and my mage and all of the companions are at level 7 having completed many quests and using all ten different downloaded add-ons , bug free . I'm having a great time except for the added stress of knowing that one little mistake and I'll have to start all over again !

What are Some users saying about the BIOS configuration ?

I Have exactly this problem. I got an Intel duocore E8400 processor on Asus P5Q Deluxe board. 2 GB ram
WinXP(32).Home edition with SP3.

In my XP task mannager i cant find anny  "choose "select affinity" and i dont se anny "a single un-greyed checkbox".  That has me wondering if theres something wrong in my XP instsall/ or config. It runs the game fine except for the save/load is disabled. I got an account at bioware and game is registerd,
Im guessing(and hoping) the quoted author is talking about annother windows issue.

I am very disappointed with EA games and i will not buy any Download content.  I do not want to encourage them to keep up theese stunts wilh DLC to squeeze out more monney from customers.
I have already payed 50Euros for a defunkt game.

Its like your brand new red sportcar wont start on the first cold and rainy morning when ure late for highscool. DISAPPOINTED !!!

With all the feedback from the previous game i am surprised that the cpu issues are still creeping up now...it is clear to see that this has not been addressed and that a roll of the dice was done on this... it looks like a problem in the game's engine that has yet to be properly resolved.

like the guy said before this is disapointing...

I can appreciate the fact they are trying to take advantage of PC power however instead of sending the save option to a second core why not put something more intensive then save game to a second core, like the Direct X 11 runtime for high or above video settings, or maybe back ground music something that runs all the time and could take advantage of the extra power. Those options are not show stoppers if they are disabled. It's kind of sad to think a five year 32Bit processor can run something that a 1 month old 64Bit processor cannot. It never occurred to me at the time I bought it AMD had a single core AMD Athlon II processor.

Here's to sticking my sword up bioware's fraudulant ass. If i sold you something that was not what i promised or/and did not work in the way purposed you could call the police on me. Why we continue to feel like game studios have some kinda golden ticket to screw us over I don't know< I guess we love their games too much. I understand its not the workers, but the CEO's and shareholders who cause the problem, but the games industry will never be taken seriously while they treat their audience like ****. Imagine going and seeing a movie which stops playing half way due to sloppy or hurried workmanship or a painting stopped halfway because the artist had a time limit. we don't expect that kind of bull**** from the accepted arts why should we except it from our games. Pirates have taken over the game industry, they just wear suits, push deadlines and make the games their hardworking studios release a pile of unusable ****.

Hi,

I've experienced the same issue and tried some of the workarounds offered on other sites including updating my device drivers, disabling music, setting directx to version 9 and running the DragonAge2.exe directly in stead of using the launcher. None of this worked. Disabling autosave is pointless too since the save spinning will still be permanent after your first manual save.

I have Windows 7 and a Quad Core CPU and yet I experienced these issues. So I checked my task manager > performance and saw that I only had one CPU there. So something weird was going on. I then opened my start > run > msconfig and went to boot > advanced options and deselected the checkbox for 'number of processors'. Then I rebooted. Now I have 4 CPU's in my task manager. Just tested the game and now it works fine, even with autosave on, music enabled and Directx 11.

(NOTE: if you do see more than one CPU under task manager > performance yet still experience this issue, then start DA2 > press the windows button on your keyboard OR ctrl-esc OR alt-tab to see the taskbar, then right-click it and go to taskmanager > processes.  Right-click DragonAge2.exe and choose "Set affinity". Then make sure 'All processors' is selected.)

I hope this can be of some use to those of you who have a multicore CPU yet still experience this issue.

Cheers,
Oliver

(EDIT: added the 'set affinity' bit)

I feel beyond disappointed, what is the point in preordering a game if i can't play it.
Not only did I waste more money on it compaired to if I had bought it in the store later, I wasted hours playing the game, until I realized i couldn't save. Everything runs smoothly except for the saving part, You need to fix this immediately.

Once game is started go into options and take check mark out of Auto Save.  This will allow you bypass the save issue keeping the game from advancing.  However after doing you can not save the game at any point so you are playing Hardcore.  The DirectX 9 setting is to resolve an issue where the game crashes during game play and does not appear to affect the save causing the loading loop.

You'd think that since so many people are having this problem (single core like me and it sounds like a lot of multi core folks as well) that bioware would at least offer us some bioware points (for the addons we have to get) to make up for us spending $60.+ for a game we can't play for the moment. Doing that won't make up for the frustration factor but at least we'd know they really want to keep their costumers happy and they want us to continue to keep playing their games. I understand it takes time to diagonse and fix but in the mean time there are alot of pissed off people just getting madder. If you go to a hotel and u are unhappy with your stay they usually take some money off your bill in an atempt to keep your business. Come on bioware make me feel like you want my continued business!!

The thing is, they're already working on it.
I'm pretty sure we are in the minority here. The whole rest of the world is enjoying the game on consoles, and i'm pretty sure if the majority of PC users were having issues, this site would be flooded and this thread would be.

We're in the minority. And yet they're already working on a fix for it. So let's just be mature and appreciative of their efforts.

In their defense, they DID list the minimum specs with 2core processor.

If we're at a theme park, and we fall below the minimum height for a roller coaster ride, and we ride it anyway, and then fall out and die, we really have no right to complain. Even if we *did* pay for the ride.

And even so, BioWare is working on a fix already. And that's awesome.

That's because your processor is only running one core, instead of both. If you scroll earlier in this thread, you'll see the work-around for you multicore guys :)

BioWare is also working on this

Actually, this thread was started by BioWare from another thread that was always at the top of the page due to the number of people experiencing this issue.  So, I doubt we're a minority and I seriously doubt BioWare is looking at the issue as a 'minority'.  They want to get this fixed as quickly as we want them to.

BioWare is awesome for getting their players back up and running.  I've been with them since Baldur's Gate, and they have never (really) failed me yet.  Well, there was NWN2, but let's not go there!

I read somewhere that a similar issue occured with ME2, so I'm thinking they must be at least a step or two ahead in getting a fix to us just based upon their experience there.

So, I'm gonna continue with my playthrough as a male Dalish Entropic Mage, get Alistair into my tent, and be happy about it!  *grins*

Although, I do seriously hope for a fix by the weekend....

So many ppl have the same problems with or without dual processors i feel like that if u ordered/bought something and payed your hard earned cash to enjoy that you would at least be able to save or have a working save function so if u do have a life and not playing games all day you can at least save some of the progress....Well i think i speak for all gamers here--We Wont To Enjoy Our Games & Not Be Delayed.

Not be delayed? Does this world not have patience for the company to make the fix? I mean they have stated they are working on the fix now. They used the fix for ME2 all people has to do is play a little hardcore untill it comes out.

Well arch_Mage_jeremy what im saying is that the developers and programmers knew bout the save problem before the game came out but i do understand that they are working on a patch to clear that up but most ppl can understand me when its too repetitive and down right non enjoyable if you gotta start over every single time and patience is only so far for each individual, now i know each game that comes out always have some bugs but lets be realistic most ppl haven't had a problem like this in a while cause mostly the bugs be clipping, certain items cant be picked up, dialog change or simply the screen shows a different view, etc but the save/load is new to me
