Windows XP Professional and multicore CPU's?
Im just considering if i should try to uppgrade from Win XP Home to Win XP Pro.
I would like to goto Win 7. But for several reasons XP Pro is more available to me at this moment in time.
According to my tiny research(pls correct me if im wrong here):
Win XP Home:
Does not support more than one core allthough i uses the cores it only can "see" them as one core.
Win XP Pro:
Can "use" multiple cores in some better way(pls feel free to elaborate if u feel the need).
I realise this an extreme workaround. But its availabe to me and ive been considering doing this upgrade annyway.
This seem to be some multicore issue.
Pls enter more data your systems so that they can fix the problems faster.
Im trying not to be angry (its damn hard) im trying to get creative now.
Im on :
Motherboard ASUS P5Q Deluxe, CPU Intel Core2 Duo E8400 ; 2Gb ram
Windows XP Home SP3

XP Home supports multi-core processors but not multiple processors. Make sure BIOS is up to date and Windows is up-to-date and then check and see if you can set Affinity in task manager. However if you have the option Windows 7 would be a good option. I recommend Home Premium or Ultimate.

In BioWares defense, the system requirements require a dual core processor (even though the initial systems specs included single core). So BioWare doesn't even NEED to patch this. They could just say forget you and do something else. Don't get me wrong most if not all BioWare games have bugs and are well known for them. I'm just glad that they are trying to fix this. It would be nice if they told us how far along they are or somthing.Immortal_Reiku wrote...
I think all of us that have wasted our time should get back 75 bucks if they dont want the game anymore that should cover the game and the gas it cost me to go get the game. I will never buy a bioware game again. In fact the only reason I bought this game was becuase I downloaded it, played it, and decided this is awesome I should go buy it. then BAM someone released a game that does not work

Thanks for your reply Barbaric35. This Affinity setting has been eluding me in the task mannager.
1st thing i tried.
Is this available in Win XP Home SP3? I was wondering if they talking about annother OS in the 1 st post of the forum.
I have automatic updates activated and working.
In task mannager i have only one diagram under perfomance with one red and one green curve.
There is no affinlty setting to be found annyware in anny right clicking on processes in the process pane in my task mannager only to change priority , to end the process and end the process tree.
On thing bothers me: I have OEM in the licens key. If that could possibly be an issue here or if a "real" licens
would have the affinity thingie.

So why does this issue uppear at machines with duo and quad core configuration? I have quad-core and still can't save/load even after tweaking task manager. Say me something "In BioWares defense".

If Biowaer could at least give us some information it would be appreciated, this is no small error and its caused by biowaer.

Key shouldn't matter. I believe your BIOS is not properly reporting your 2core processor to Windows. I would recommend you try rebooting your PC, going into BIOS resetting it to default settings, save changes, reboot into Windows and see if you then have two processors showing in Task manager (make sure in task manager you choose performance, view CPU History and chose one graph per CPU. If that doesn't work either your boot.ini is set to only use one processor, or your BIOS needs to be updated to enable the needed APIC configs. To check your boot.ini click start, run, type msconfig, click ok. Then go to boot.ini, advanced options click /numproc= check box, see if two is an option if so select it.
Hopefully one of the above works for you.

So what they are afraid they will be raged at if they give an update?

what do you not understand, it's not just single-core processors, I have i7 processor with four cores, and no matter what settings I run with I still cant save/load an I get stuck in never ending loading..

I am in the same boat. Laptop Specs:
OS: Win 7 64bit
Processor: Core i7 720QM (Dragon Age II config correctly indicates 4 cores) 1.6 GHz
Mem: 4 GB
Video: NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250M (January 2011 WQHL drivers, not the March Beta drivers)
The game installed fine. I can start a game, get through the starter fight, get through the character design (just been accepting default for now), and I get through the next loading screen. Then during the next cinematic (the recap video for DA:O with the drawings on a green background) it CTDs when the narrative moves to fight at Ostagar.
Tried the various tips here. Affinity was always set to "all cores". Checked Task Manager and I have multiple CPU graphs.
The strange thing I have noticed is that I actually have 8 graphs, and the set affinity box has eight cores (numbered 0-7) under the "all cores" check box. All this despite the i& only having 4 physical cores. If I look under Task Manager -> Resource Monitor, it lists 4 cores as active and 4 cores as parked. I tried an internet search on how to unpark drives, but none of those changes made any difference in which cores were "parked". I ran out of time last night, but tonight I think I will try to set the affinity to only use the core numbers listed as active.
Has anyone else seen 8 cores listed on an i7 processor?
Mike
Edit: Alright solved my own question about the 4 vs. 8 cores. It's 4 physical cores and 4 virtual cores through Hyperthreading. Could Hyperthreading possibly be causing problems with DA2 on i7 processors?

Multi core users need to tweak their systems, bioses and whatnot and that's really weird.
I guess we are back in good old DOS days when you had to spend more time configuring the system than playing the game itself...
But as a guy from BW said: They are working on the problem.
