Has anybody done this quest? I'm wondering about the ramifications (if any) of choosing to side with the elf over the magistrate.
Thanks, guys. =)

I have the same question....I googled it and came up with nothing. I just ended up killing him. I know it's early, but hope at some point people will start posting more about the quests in this game.

Wondering as well... Are there friendship/rivalry points awarded if Merill is in your party when you complete this dialogue?

+/- 10 friend/rival for Merril if she's in your party, depending on what choice you make. I was going to send him back to the courts, but losing points with both Merril and Aveline wasn't very appealing to me...

If Merrill's not in your party, do you gain an advantage in Hightown by siding with the Magistrate?

Just replayed it and let the son live to see what happened. The best result from this was telling the magistrate I would not talk about it (the bottom option on the conversation wheel), but it would get out because people would connect his son back to him. He gave 3 gold coins and +5 rival with Avaline. If you attempt to bribe the magistrate he gives you 2 gold coins and +10 rival with Avaline. The option of telling him to keep his money gives +5 friends with Avaline.
The elf tells you he is taking his family away from Kirkwall, so I don't know if that has any ramifications later.
