Once, you MAX a party's member's friendship, it is LOCKED. No longer will quest based decisions lower it. So you can mix them with other party members and do quests and things they normally would not approve of.
The havent "broken" this yet because I haven't been mean or cruel to anyone, but I'd like further confirmation on this from other players.
Importance to maxxing out friendship

It's in the manual. Once you hit full friend or rival they don't change from there.

Also, it supposedly opens up a character specific abilty of some sort.
