So I just picked up Anders in my party, and I was very excited because he was my favorite character from Awakening (and possibly Origins). He was pretty consistantly hilarious and I always, ALWAYS had him in my party.

So far, though, he's being incredibly somber. It isn't even the same character. I get that there was a "trauma" of sorts that is weighing on him, but he isn't nearly as fun. Lame =(

his party banters are fun though.
when i first picked up Seb and saw his costume on my TV, I had one resounding thought that Anders brought up perfectly.

"Is that supposed to be Andraste's face on your crotch?"

He is a mind reader, I tell you.

Eh, he's kind of a downer for me too. I miss his old voice too, esp after running into Cullen earlier in act 1 sometime. :(

According to TV Tropes, David Gaider wrote him in DA:A, while Jennifer Helper wrote him in DA2.

I think I liked Gaider's version better...

Well, to be fair, his character bio on the DA2 website does say that he isn't the Anders we remember...

Personally, I like new Anders. Seriousness with a tad bit a snark mixed in. Brilliant.

Woobies are a hit or horribly miss thing with me. Either I love them and want to hug them, or I want to dropkick them down a well.

Sad Anders' sadface tears at my heartstrings every time, and more often then not, I find myself wishing he didn't fall in love with my PC. It feels more tragic than anything else.

Justice gives him depth and conflict, but if you use Avaline or Varric he says some funny things old style Anders things.

New Anders appeals to me more and he is my first romance will more than likely end badly.

Isabela and Anders : (not exact quotes my memory is fallible)
SPOILERS Obviously.

Izzy: Anders..... Didn't I see you at the Pearl once?
Anders: Oh right you're that _______, you were into that girl with the griffin tattoos what was her name?
Izzy: _____. And you're the one who could do that electricity thing, that was niiiiice.
Hawke: Please stop talking.

There's still some gold in there. :P

Yeah, Anders is a little less on all the time (and I agree that talking to Cullen made me miss his old voice so, so much) but he still brings it from time to time. His asking Aveline about templar/mage roleplaying was pretty awesome. I like having him and Varric with me, because Varric is basically the best and it makes me miss old Anders less.

I don't want to spoil to much, but get to the end of the game and he is a huge downer. My male hawke romanced him, and I almost threw my computer against the wall.

I half expect this dialogue to come up at some point:

Hawke: So Anders, what do you do in your spare time when your not healing refugees and adventuring with us?
Anders: I cut myself with the shards of my broken dreams.
Everyone in the party: O_o...

Funny, but everyone knows he spends his downtime working on his manifesto.

hahahaha, shards of my broken dreams... brilliant!

I was just really looking forward to old-Anders in my party, and I was pretty bummed that he's all serious and sad-face now. And not the same voice. Oh well, maybe after a few more quests w/ him in my party I'll start to like new-Anders more.

Okay, I definitely lol'ed at that.  That is the most hilariously emo thing ever.

Anders's manifesto made me sad.  I think Hawke calling it a "manifesto" was probably just her being nice.  Especially when she finds a bit in the fireplace.  I imagine it's more the rambling scribbles of a man losing his mind than any kind of orderly statement.  :(  Poor, poor thing.

Great. Now everyone in the office is looking at me like I'm crazy, because I'm trying not to fall over laughing.

He definitely gets some snarky lines in- he actually even gets snarky ones about his pet causes, even. He'll make sarcastic statements about the intelligence of any templar he meets, about why mages would dare want to run away, and he can really be sharply humorous about the idiocy of blood magic and dealing with demons.

As you get further in the acts, though, he starts getting more and more wired about it, though, till he's all but lost it. Then he loses a lot of the snark. Not even in to elaborate revenge fantasies anymore. You can watch it- he never gets along well with Merill, but at first he's mostly prodding at her, while by act 3 he's totally willing to rip her to pieces.

As you can see in my signature, I really love the comedy characters. Which made Anders's change a real heartbreak for me. I miss him. :(

Gonna have to edit my signature pic again...

I just met Anders so did a quick skim of this thread to avoid spoilers.  On first impression, I liked Anders's old look better (he did sizzle ) and this version looks kinda bland.  His voice is also kinda boring and uninteresting.  Is it a different voice actor?  I hope he retains some of his snarky behavior and not totally Justice-fied.  Poor Anders, he really isn't a doom and gloom type.

Adam Howden(voice of new Anders) didn't deliver enough snarkiness into the few comedic lines that he had, and its a damn shame. I understand the devs don't want important characters to share the same voice actor, but still... they should've had Greg Ellis(voice of old Anders and Cullen) play Anders while Adam Howden play new Cullen.

I kind of hate him after that ending. Idiot. I let him live though, I'd rather have him live a long life with the weight of his crime on his shoulders than give him a quick death.

Is it bad that I'm finding it hard to hate Anders for what he did because he tugged at the Woobie heartstrings really well? It's probably a bad sign, but I don't care. He took a character whom I'd 100% intended to be villainous and seize the throne regardless of who she stepped on, and turned her into a relentless crusader for a greater cause.

Fascinating stuff.

After the nonstop bashing he did to Merrill, it was quite satisfying to plunge my dagger into him.

I definitely miss the light-hearted, snarky Anders, but...

After beating the game and seeing what he does in the end, there is no way they could have kept him being as silly as he was before, it just wouldn't make sense. The whole game he would be cracking jokes and doing Anders' Spicy Shimmy, and then BOOM, literally. I don't think you can be that silly and that kind of crazy at the same time. So he makes sense to me, he used to be silly, he got really pissed and decided to change everything, so he had to change himself.

But you still see the old Anders shining through every so often...

The Old Sander is a guy who is always at the wrong place at the wrong time. The New Ander is an angry homicidal maniac. Both with dialog to match.

Regardless of how strange the transformation is and how unlikely. I like the old Anders better as well.
