I liked the new Anders. Awakenings Anders was fun, but he was also a little too much Alistair-lite for me. The new one is a different creature and I enjoyed it. Romancing him was a kick in the heart sometimes but worth it.

New Anders sucks I agree. He doesn't even have his sexy voice anymore... :(

I'm a straight woman so I'm not really into the f/f romances, but I think I might have to go video game gay, since the guys are so disapointing...

Well, to be fair, his character bio on the DA2 website does say that he isn't the Anders we remember...

Personally, I like new Anders. Seriousness with a tad bit a snark mixed in. Brilliant.

I liked him, too. I kept him and Merrill around for most of DA2, up to the very end. I think he's a great and complex character.

The new voice actor doesn't do Anders justice(Haaa haa, I'm so funny...), I wish they had kept the old one, he was much better.

It would have been kinda weird, considering the larger role that Cullen played in this game and the opportunity for the two characters to interact. I agree, though. I though Anders' VA did a good job with the emotional stuff, but some of the jokeier, old-school Anders stuff was stilted.

I am of the exact same opinion!

Is it bad that I'm finding it hard to hate Anders for what he did because he tugged at the Woobie heartstrings really well? It's probably a bad sign, but I don't care. He took a character whom I'd 100% intended to be villainous and seize the throne regardless of who she stepped on, and turned her into a relentless crusader for a greater cause.

Fascinating stuff.

I don't think so, or at least I hope not, because that is exactly the situation I went through! Well, maybe I wasn't going to have my Hawke seize the throne, but I had no intention of her being the crusader either...until Anders convinced her, that is.

I directly blame the absence of Ser Pounce-A-Lot for everything that went wrong here.

In the first act, he's somber but funny. Second act depressed, somber, and somewhat funny. Third act he's just miserable to be around.

What happened to Anders??? I was so dissapointed. His new voice actor was so wooden. For the serious bits, the VA was okay, but his funny remarks sounded like he was just reading the lines from a piece of paper and he was uncomfortable doing it. Didn't have the ironic edge from DA:A. I kept imagining exactly how the old Anders VA would have said every line, and would have said it better.
I kept taking him along and even romancing him thinking that some of the old Anders might come out--but to no end. Even his 'funny' writing (which there was little of since he constantly talked only about the mage/templar issues) seemed weak and unsure and not very funny. The DA:A banter with Anders had me laughing out loud. I understand the changes might have happened to him because of Justice, but couldn't the writers have come up with a nice balance between a seriousness revolutionary and a guy with a good sense of humor? At least at the beginning, before he become severely fanatical? This would have made him such a more complex character (for me anyway). Alistair was both serious and seriously funny, and made him a memorable character.

Edit: thinking back on it now...maybe he did have *some* funny banter.  Maybe it was the delivery that wasn't funny?

Count me as another who is disappointed with Anders in DA II. I think the voice-acting and story is fine when viewed alone but this is not the Anders I always made sure to bring along whenever I went out adventuring in Awakening. That sparky character has gone and what we have in its place is a face like a wet blanket and the personality of a crashing bore. The alternatives aren't anything to write home about either so I think my straight Hawke lass is going to remain celebate.

I loved every moment of Anders character development from DA:O to DA:II. Having known a boy just like this the change from lovable, funny mage to depressed weirdo was not that big of a leap for me. They suck you in and make you care about them and their beliefs but they don’t really care about you. To me Anders was always like this and Justice just made it worse.

I personally miss the old Anders and Ser Pounce-a-lot, He's way to brooding an all "I'm gonna save the mages even if it means killing them all!"

Makes me wish for the old Anders cause the new one almost makes me hate him.

I don't mind the concept of what they did with Anders but I hate off screen character development. I wish they would have released something at some point that showed this change. They also should have brought back the original voice actor.

Its really hard to even connect Anders as the same character from Awakening beyond the name. Hell his skills aren't even the same. Still made him my healer though.

I was slightly disappointed in Anders I guess...

Mostly because he wasn't anywhere near as funny as he was in Awakening. I mean in awakening he was really sarcastic with a good sense of humor that came with a bite. In DA2 he was definitely a little more melancholy. Even more so in Act III.

Though I would defend that ever since Justice his personality has been warped an aweful lot.

I loved Anders in Awakenings. I was really happy when I heard he would be in DA2 and I would finally have a chance to romance him. After I read his little story though, the fear set in - it was looking like they were going to pull an Ohgren & take a perfectly decent guy in game 1 turn him into someone you want dead by the end of the game 2. I lost all connection with the first Anders, I didn't even bother romancing him. I preferred a "chaste marriage" to getting with him. If they were going to change the character so drastically, they should have had Greg Ellis do the voice so that you could keep some kind of connection to the old Anders. Cullen did not have any kind of vital role - give him the new guy's voice (which I think would have fit Cullen Very well). Speaking of Cullen, totally love the new Cullen. I always stop and talk to him when I go to the Gallows.

He's been one of my favorite characters.  The first kiss with him was really something.  That man has some passion.

I agree with rak72. lol and I'm always going to visit Cullen at the Gallows to, makes me wish he was a romance option...it also makes me wonder what the third dragon age will be like.

I liked Anders in DA:A but I wouldn't have romanced him back then. He was 100% my Warden's best buddy but in a "lets-brush-the-kitty-and-braid-each-others-hair" kind of way.I didn't take him seriously.
DA2 ... I'm a little saddened that they changed Anders voice actor, but the new voice is still great. New Anders is indeed less light-hearted but his tragic character just screamed out to my Hawke to try and fix him. Maybe I'm just a sucker for apostate terrorists.

Only the name remained from previous charming and sharp-witted Anders. He is completely different person. Disappointed...

Vo change and personality change was too much for me. It would have been nicer to have just a generic mage companion if such changes were needed for the purpose of the story. I would have kicked Alistair out of my bed for Awakening Anders but not for this..

The whining and "vengeance driven" Anders imho lacked in all departments. I simply could not deal with his constant complaining and the forced "jokes" that were the worst part in party banter. I simply did not see a glimpse of his humor in this character. I am simpleton and laugh easily to even the most stupid jokes - this char did not make me laugh not even once. Personality change due to Justice is acceptable excuse as such, but some essence of old Anders should have been there.

New vo sounded often like he was really reading out of the paper. My jaw dropped when he started from the stony story of wardens making him to get rid of his cat. I could not believe the lack of acting.
Maybe it would have been easier to relate changed Cullen vo than Anders. The more sane and grown up Cullen felt like the same char because of the vo. I would have rather seen these issues that Anders has now on Cullen that isn't supposed to be your permanent companion.
With the old actor maybe it would have been easier to understand the story about Justice turning into vengeance and all that. The change was just too much.

i believe he wasn't the same actor due to him being in the new pirates of the caribbean film. considering how big of a part anders plays, it's likely he didn't have the time to get into the studio for heavy voice work. but... who knows for sure? :/

It's because Cullen had the same VO and they don't like characters that play a significant role to have the same VO. They should have changed Cullen imo but I guess they figured given Anders circumstances changing his voice would be more believable.

cullen's part in the game is small by comparison. i find it unlikely that would be the reason. also, considering anders has a more upbeat and higher tone. dragon age and other games have rarely shyed away from using the same voice actors in the same game, especially considering the high demand of some (i.e. yuri lowenthal, johnny yong bosch, michelle ruff, stephanie sheh, wendee lee, etc.). i think it's more likely that he had less time (due to his acting career and the new POTC) to put into dragon age 2 but still wanted to be a part of it. bioware likely gave him the option to voice cullen again so that he might be able to do something worthwhile on the game.

My 2 cents is that the new Anders is not really believable as a character. We're led to believe that Justice warped him as a person, but the old Anders--despite conflict with the circle--was a pretty even-keeled person.

The old Anders didn't want to get rid of the circle entirely, he just wanted less Chantry oversight and interference. He was not the kind of person to be driven to violence, and the fact that he escaped seven times without having retaliated openly against his captors shows that he was unwilling to hurt people.

What's least believable in my opinion though is that Anders would let Justice take him as a host in the first place. All the banter in Awakening indicated that Justice found Anders' constant questioning a nuisance and disliked his cavalier attitude, which was abrasive against Justice's seriousness.

Justice or no Justice the new Anders doesn't fit at all with the old one. What sucks the most though is that there isn't any comic relief companion the way there was with the other games. Origins had Alistair and Oghren, Awakening had Anders and Oghren, and the only characters who fit the bill in DA2 are Merrill and Isabela, and their funny comments are extremely one-dimensional and short in supply. I love DA2 but I hate the companions, they're all way too serious. This game is in dire need of some drinking humor.
