agreed... anders is a completely different person. which is really sad since he was one of my favs in awakening... him and sigrun. i think the idea of the companions now is to play off each other. for instance, varric and isabela in your party is better than one or the other alone... or isabela and merrill together. certain characters will bring out more serious conversations than others. although, i think anders was a fail on bioware's part. he's so calm and sad one moment or he's extremely angry the next. heck, i didn't even like how they made him so easily gay in DA2. not that i have a problem with it, it's just that he suddenly comes on really strong right after you help him in the first quest. none of the other characters do that except for isabela. i played all through awakening and never once did he seem all that gay to me... just really light hearted and sarcastic. honestly, i didn't have a real sense of enjoying anders as a character in this game, which sorta made certain anders-related decisions in the game easier. i wish they either brought anders back the way he was (but could still keep some of the evolved personality to fit with DA2's plot)... otherwise i could have have done without him. a better character to bring back from awakening could have been sigrun or something.
Anders is kind of a downer... disappointed =/

I love Anders, new and old, but Bioware definitely screwed up. What can you do though? Nothing, either take the game as it is or don't play it. I disagree that he doesn't love Hawke. I think he does love Hawke. Hatred for injustice will make you do things you may regret later even normal people. I know, I lived it as a child.

I ... so easily gay? What does that even mean?
What, do you want to have to buy him at least three beers before he'll make the beast with two backs with you?

I don't mind new Anders, really, snark or no snark, sane or insane. But what I can't get over is the new voice.
It's so bland it hurts. Seriously, Anders can be emo as he likes (he was very emo in Awakening too - recall his sadness when he talked about his escapes from the tower and his always being on the run) but his original voice was so much more animated and endearing. In a computer game world of repeating movements and facial expressions, the character's voice is EVERYTHING.
I do get the whole "Anders and Justice are one" reasoning, even though I totally dispute that they are actually as combined as Anders claims (I think he peddles that story so he doesn't have to deal with the fact that he himself is going insane without any help from his friend, or so he can deny that Justice is taking control of him like a growing parasite - something impossible if they are now "one soul") - but it turns out that Anders/Justice combined just makes the character sound like a narcoleptic cough syrup addict most of the time. This is A Bad Thing.
Imagine Flemeth with a different voice. Can't hear it? No, neither can I.
I honestly think, with his original voice, DA2 Anders would have had a far greater impact and made both the romance and the choice at the ending a lot more affecting, as it would actually feel like the character we connected with in Awakening. Not a completely different person.
((NB: I actually didn't like Justice's new "demon in a reverb chamber" voice either! How much more affecting would it have been to have had his original voice bursting out of Anders' mouth, filled with a rage we never heard from him when he was a lost spirit in a dead body, being all "the world is so beautiful"... "lyrium sings"))

If you were a new personality incorporating both old Anders and Justice, well, I don't expect you'd be all that cheery if your other half had a propensity for taking over. Anders isn't the same, but there are flashes of his old personality every so often. He has an amusing response if you say something to the effect that you'd have to lock him up to keep him safe.

it's actually more about the fact that i'd like to avoid making my character gay sometimes. if you're nice to him, he instantly hits on you and they give you no way to let him down easily without like +10 rivalry right off the bat. the only way to avoid the topic is to flirt with him then avoid flirting the rest of the game for fear you may accidentally end up in a relationship with him.Kawamura wrote...

Uh. Your character's sexual orientation is not defined by other characters, I would imagine.
Plus, some people don't really -- like being turned down? Why wouldn't you get a bit of a rivalry increase for that?

My take on Anders was that he and Justice DID become one, but... hmm, well, this is how I explained it to someone else.
Picture (if you will) that Anders has grown some pudge. In order to remove that pudge, he's put himself on a strict diet (Justice.) Also, Hawke is a piece of chocolate.
Now, while Anders is still one person, he's developed a second 'personality' to help keep him on track. However, Anders and 'the diet' are at constant war with each other because dammit, Anders wants to lose that weight without giving up his favorite foods, but the diet demands that he stay on target!
And so we get a situation like this:
Anders: Dayum, I want some Hawke/Chocolate.
This diet is eating me up inside.
Justice/Diet: NO, STICK TO THE PLAN. STICK TO THE PLAN!
Anders: I want to, but... but Chocolate... QQ
Justice/Diet: NO, CHOCOLATE IS BAD FOR YOU! WE HAD A DEAL, REMEMBER? DON'T CROSS ME MAN. DON'T CROSS ME! >
... Either I've put too much thought into this, or not enough. xD Either way, that's just how I see it. >>
