Well I've found a fix that works for me everytime. Earlier today, the constant freezing started happening again. Even shutting down the game and rebooting my PC solved nothing. What I did (and I've had done this before) was to set the game to DirectX 9 renderer, load the game. Run my latest save. Exit the game. Set back to DirectX 11 renderer, and run my latest save. Works everytime.

Sounds like I've encountered this, though closing the game and starting it up again, then reloading appears to fix it every time. Odd.

Well, I discovered a solution but I'm not sure most of you are going to like it. And that is, buy a GTX 560. That's what I did and the game has been running smooth ever since. I was even able to turn on the high-res textures as an added benefit. So there ya go folks, the $250 solution :D

Well Rob .. this is the one issue that's currently destroying my DA2 experience. It always takes place in dialogue for me, and while the current sentence finishes the picture freezes .. then I can easily go and make a coffee, have a cigarette, and take a casual walk back to my PC before it unfreezes - often skipping the rest of the dialogue. Now, this doesn't happen in every conversation .. but does happen at least once in every two to three conversations (at worst).

I've found that it 'sometimes' breaks the freeze if I do ctrl+alt+delete, or minimise the game (if possible), then maximise again .. but sometimes this just prolongs the agony. I'm baffled how this could've gone unnoticed .. pay me .. I'll test a game properly for you :P :P

Drivers up to date .. same types of set-ups and probs as mentioned already in this thread .. etc etc .. same deal. I've tried pretty much all the solutions mentioned here too .. including the beta patch .. nothing.

Anyway, back on topic, in my humble view fixing this, for me, would improve the game a LOT .. right now I'm soooo disappointed and ambivalent about the DA2 experience .. with this issue mostly at the core of it.

Another victim here.

Worst cases are the freezes in cut-scenes, and then entire critical plot points or storylines are missed. For example, after the first Ogre battle, and the return to battle (BTW - auto-save would be a great addition here), the game froze and the appearance of Flemeth was missed until she morphed into humanoid form. It took several repeated battles until I was able to gain the desired information and proceed. But the same seems to occur in each new lengthy cut-scene, and I appear to missing a lot of the actual tale.

In combat this occurs too, but in this case I may hit Pause, then wait until the system catches up and displays the Pause command; then procede.

As I recall, my specs:
Win7 x64
i5 2.8 speed
NVidia 9800 GT
4g RAM

I must say this problem is very infuriating. There hasn't been a single case where I could play a session of Dragon Age 2 without the game freezing up for long periods of time and then crashing. Not to mention the many, many bugged quests where you cannot complete a variety of quests throughout the various Acts. I never had any problems whatsoever with Dragon Age: Origins. It's just a shame to see so many bugs in the sequel that just got swept under the carpet. I hope this gets fixed soon.

I'm just gonna stop playing DA II untill this get fixed, I'm missing to much of the plot because of the freezing and it just takes you out of the experience. Oh yeah, and fixing the launch process would be nice too, because I hate using a crack for it, it just feels wrong.

UPDATE: I seem to have been able to fix my personal freeze issues by both setting my antivirus (avast!) and firewall (Comodo) to "silent" or "game" mode. I also did a full uninstall and reinstall of the Catalyst 11.4 preview drivers for my Radeon 6850 and stopped overclocking it, though I imagine the antivirus and firewall are the more likely culprits.

I'm getting regular crashes for some reason, only started happening today though so I have no idea what's going wrong.

i7 2600 Sandybridge ~3.4GHz
Radeon 6950 with 11.4 preview drivers
6GB RAM
Win 7 x64

Can otherwise max (8x AA etc.) out the game.

And here I thought I was only the one with this problem.

Well, my game freezes mostly during cutscenes, I'd thought it might have been a problem with the tones of dust in my pc, well, I cleaned it a bit, but couldn't really touch CPU or the power supply unit, as I'm too, er, afraid of causing a mess there, you know, I may not intentionally unplug something and get a bit angry because of that, to put it lightly.

The thing is, I'm not patient enough to wait these +30 seconds and I usually reset the PC, well, I tried to open the task manager or just minimalize the game, but it sort of, doesn't want to work, I bet if I waited, it would minimalize and let me kill the process with the task manager eventually.

I was wondering if the problem would occur if I switched back to the directx 9 settings and would use the medium graphic option, as now I'm using the high one.

My PC specs:
Nvidia Geforce GTX 260
8GB RAM
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 - 2,4ghz (ye I know it's silly :X)
Windows Vista Ultimate x64

I was able to play Dragon Age Origins with the highest graphic settings without any problems, until recently - my PC started to crash and restart itself during some cutscenes (I believe it's due to overheating, as when I cooled it a bit, I hadn't any problems), it's happened like 2 times during DA2 too, and in another games, like Aion.

PS: I grew the patience to press ctrl+alt+delete and see what happens, and yes, after like 20-30 seconds I could open the task manager and kill the process, good to know I don't need to restart PC everytime it happens, but anyhow, these freezes are still annoying.

Happens to me randomly. Game slows to a crawl every now and then. I can get hours of smooth gmaeplay then blam. Slows to a crawl. I've found that pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL, opening task manager, then closing it and switching back to the game "fixes" it.

I am running Windows Vista 32bit on a 3.0Ghz core2duo with a GTX260 using DirectX11 renderer.

Happens to me too, ALT - TAB or CTRL-ALT-DELETE out of the game and back in fixes the issue but it doesn't make it any less annoying.

I have found a solution I tried running different driver versions, the most recent beta 267.24 which is suppose to have some fixes for DA2 worked slightly better than version 266.58, but it wasnt good enough to be playable.

Any ways I tried my hand in running some previous drivers and I havent had any problems running the game with driver version 260.99 (October 25 2010). My freezes are completely gone now, might work for the rest of you...

Just bumbing "this works for me"

http://social.biowar...index/6497075/1

The 270.32 alpha (pre beta) driver is worth a try if u got a problem. Worstcase is a rollback driver if it dont work. On my system with gtx 285 i run perfect in Dx11 modus with a great fps at 1920x1200. ( 30 to 60 fps)

Love from Norway. :)

Ok, this is really frustrating me now. Much farther in the game and now all the cinematics dont' even play, I get a screen and then it just pauses and some sound plays. After a while it comes back but I've missed the entire scene.

Bioware, your standard of quality has really dropped and it's very disappointing as I held you as one of my favourite game companies.

The game is fairly stable for me, but after about 5-6 hrs of play the game will start freezing for 10-15s at a time... when it gets like that.. I SAVE, and exit the game.. if I don't.. 100% chance the game will perma freeze within a few minutes.

I can't really complain if that's the only time I crash.

So out of habbit, I'll usually save and exit the game every 2 hrs to keep performance up and freezes away :)

From what I can see, the game is has a memory leak bug while in DX11 mode. I do not know if it's the game or drivers causing the leak... but I KNOW it's a leak as the game will crash right when it hits the 2GB limit for 32bit apps... :) Also after about 5 hrs, the game has about 50 MILLION page faults. While faults are normal, and can go into the millions, I shouldn't see that many on a system with this much memory (a dev will know what I mean).

Note. I tried the DX9 renderer, and this leak does not appear to happen under it.

EDIT: The game does use 40+ threads. This is unusually high for a gaming program. Although it's good because the more CPUs you have, the more that can work the threads in parralell. However with this many threads, timing must be perfect, otherwise you get lag, stuttering, and other issues as well as mass ammount of PFs

It happens mostly while initiating dialog scenes, but during general gameplay as well. Running a task manager on the 2nd screen revealed that the game always freezes/lags when the cpu (quad core) usage rises above 50%, e.g. when the game starts using 3 instead of the regular 2 cores. The freeze/lag stops as soon as the process is back to using 2 cores.

About my system: AMD 910e cpu, 8gb ram, AMD 5770gpu, Win7x64, running DA2 at 2048*1152, max details, dx11 texture pack, but no AA

As far as the memory leak discribed by the previous poster goes: I have yet to experience this, the game seemed to be stable around 950-1050mb ram usage

I was having these stopping/going issues also. Was driving me nuts. I was playing at max resolution for monitor 1600x1200. Today I turned it down the 1280x960 and all is perfectly smooth now. I have all detail to max using DX11 and HD texture pack. Full AA etc. Can go hours now with not a single issue. Seems odd that reducing resolution worked as before just walking in city I would notice slight stutters and of course any conversations after say an hour resulted in complete stoppage of video and sound. Finished all of Act3 without a problem.

My system is not great and some things are few years old.
