I would try the 267.59 driver, but don't feel comfortable having to mod it. I would rather wait for a driver from Nvidia that doesn't require modification, or (preferably) a patch from Bioware that actually fixes the issue.

Try this one.

Cry. The leaked 270.xx NVIDA drivers seem to fix the temporary freezing issues, but unfortunately they are causing problems with other games now. Too sad. I hope the next offical driver release will do both, fix the DA2 freezing and not causing any issues with other games.

Has anyone tried the new 267.84 drivers, and if so, what's your performance compared with other ones?

EDIT: Also a new notebook driver, 267.76 http://www.nvidia.co...hql-driver.html

This bug is just awful. Have updated drivers on a Geforce 8800M GTS. Game was unplayable until I changed to DX9 rendering. Problem solved, but I think the graphics quality might be slightly less. Game's not too playable above medium textures.

Hope there's a patch soon.

The game crashes as all the Dragonage games when it is heavy fighting it is nothing new :P Think this is the last Dragonage game i wanna purchase now!

After endeless discussions in the forum for Dragonage Orgins crashes nohing happen or any good feedback from Bioware at all, so i think this will be the issue here too with DA 2!

Am I the only one having this problem with an ATI Card? I get random accelerations (one L) in combat and hangs/lag during dialogue. The accelerations aren't bad and I've only barely noticed them, but the hangups makes talking to people a pain.

Well, I'm running an ATI HD 4850 with 512mb RAM, and I have the exact same issues.  the overlap/lag  in the dialogue is the most distracting, but I count myself lucky that these are the only issues I'm having.  I'm still in Act One, and I hope it doesn't get worse.  Another basically great game, with tons of bugs.  Hope they have Witcher 2 sorted better when it arrives.

This has happened to me twice. Both during dialogue. (Alt-Tab) didnt work the first time, assuming the machine was locked I rebooted. Second time I also tried ctrl-esc which did minimize DAII to the taskbar. Switching back to the game the process had resumed, with a message on the left "lost connection to server". Is the lost connection a symptom or cause?
I assume with the DRM specified for this PC title, the connection is maintained for the purpose of uploading profile stats, achievements, etc... correct? Im not gonna get too upset as I am aware the game would still play in offline mode if started offline. With this in mind, a game freeze due to lost server connection would be a "bug", and not quite warranted to mention some other game company by name.

Considering the LH screen message log times out/dissapears after 5 seconds, its possible that unless you click back into the game immediately as I did, you may never see it.

I'm getting the same issue as well, both on "High" and "Medium" graphics settings.  I've tried playing in windowed mode, as well as full screen.  When in windowed mode, my whole operating system freezes in time with the game, and neither alt+tab, nor alt+esc, nor ctrl+alt+del work until after the freeze is almost finished.

It always seems to be in the same spots as well -- for example fighting rogues in Lowtown during the quest "The Way It Should Be" or during cut scenes when talking to Hawke's mother in Gamlen's house.

Changing the game to play in DirectX 9 mode, does seem to resolve the issue, after a bit of testing by loading saved games right before the slow-downs occur.

System details are as follows:

Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-Bit
Video: NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 (1Gb) x 2 in SLI mode
Video Driver Versions: both 266.58 and 267.24
CPU: Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.67 Ghz
RAM: 6Gb DDR3 @ 1333Mhz
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5
Sound: Realtek sound card built into the motherboard

I tried the new 267.85 driver. In order to make it work on my GTX 275, I performed the same workaround as the 267.26 driver.

It works perfect. Even better than the 267.26 driver. No more stuttering, good FPS.

Highly recommended for downloadz.

Edit:
If your current driver works correctly and good, stick with it. The 267.85 driver makes loading take longer than usual.

The only advantage of this driver is no more stuttering. And stuttering wasn't that annoying, actually...

EditEdit:
The long loading is only remarkable when you have hit the Windows key at least once. So if you want to have normal loading times, don't press it.

Even though the overall loading time increases with this driver, it is hardly noticable, until you perform the above.

Probably been mentioned, but I only started having this issue when I updated to the latest NVIDIA drivers (266.something). Reverting to the older driver (260.99) I was using seems to have fixed the issue.

First of all greetings to you all.

I had read hopefully all info in this thread and it seems there is this question I would like to ask.

Can your Video card Run DIRECT X 11?

My specs:

Os: Windows Vista home 64
Video: Evga Nvidia 260 GTX Core 216
Ram: 8 DDR 2 Gig
HDD: 1 Tetra. , 500 Gig (backup)

What I read and understand, My video card Supports Direct X10, and like everyone else, if I set it on DX 11, I too get the freeze problem. But changing it to DX 9. I have no problem.

I know DX10 cards are backward compatible to DX 9, but can it "Forward" compatible to DX 11. I also read somewhere and understand even if your OS like Windows 7 says Dx 11. Your video card even is it says DX 11 will
not exactly run like DX 11.

So if anyone here, preferably who works in Nvidia, can officially say that my Nvidia 260 gtx can run DX11, then its a patch or driver problem.

But if it cannot run DX 11 then... Its one of those I need to buy a new DX 11 Video card  so I can play DA 2 problem.

Thank you for your reply.

I have DAII installed on an SSD drive and I also get pauses. The game loads instantly, but sometimes quicksaving saving freezes the game up for a few minutes.... eventually it clears up.

I have a mobile DX10 graphics card (GTX 260M), and I can play High on DX11 just fine, you just have to make sure you use a driver version equal to or above 267.59, even if it has to be modded for the time being.

I have a GTS 250, and this problem is filling me with anger!! I have updated my driver, installed the DA2 patch 1.01 but still persists.... I can't play with this thing happening... Please, Bioware Team, try to release a patch for the Geforce 200 Series users!

Quick thought - is the DX11 v DX9 graphics difference really that noticable? I see that Crysis 2 released as DX9 only, and whilst surprised, read something about DX11 only really letting the processing of smoke and water effects be more efficient, so in essence, not particulary noticable on overall game/graphic quality.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Even though I'm working happily now on the archived xxx.99 driver, I'm considering going back up to the current nvidia driver release, but running dx9 with everything maxed out.

Will I even be able to tell the difference?

I was able to tell the difference, and I was only running High on DX11 with a DX10 card. The high resolution textures only really become noticeable on High and above, and some better effects come into play which make it so I don't ever want to go back to DX9 :P

It depends really how much you notice graphical changes. I know some people who can't tell where DX10 mode ends and DX11 begins or any difference between the two. Personally the only major difference i see is a framerate drop when i put it on very high graphics which is supposively the DX11 mode. Even on high you get all the lighting and special effects like shadows of clouds reflecting on the ground so i'm not sure what more i am getting on DX11 it';s obviously doing something for the framerate to drop so significantly but i'm not sure what.

So if you are like me then you probably won't notice a difference unless you look at DX9 vs DX10 then the difference in less lighting and shadows is obvious.

I've had all sorts of issues with freezing as well. I've noticed that at the first stutter I notice if I hit ESC and manage to make it to the red menu screen then the video seems to reset and all stuttering goes away. If my processor utilization hits 1-5% then the game has frozen completely and the process needs to be killed via Task Manger; if processor utilization is still normal (40-60%), then the game will eventually recover. This occurs at 1900x1200 resolution in either full screen or windowed mode.

I've had the freezing occur again recently; however, now it happens occasionally whenever companion banter is about to start, not during the Hawke cutscene-type conversations like it used to. Otherwise, it's been mostly smooth using DirectX 11 / High settings with the Catalyst 11.4 preview (obviously I have an AMD card, Radeon 6850 1GB). Very High just destroys my computer, though; I lose 15 fps on the spot just turning that on.

I think this problem shows up when there are "lights" and the shadows they cast makes it lag and freeze.

Not a lot of testing done for this, but I find that the temporary freezes haven't happened for me if I turn off one of my two CPUs in "Task Manager". Start the game, alt-tab back to windows, start Task Manager. In the "Processes" tab, right click and select "Set Affinity..." for the Dragon Age 2 process, and finally turn off a CPU.

Cheers.

Note: This also worked in Mass Effect 2 to fix the incredibly long load times between areas.

NOTICE:
Nvidia has just released some official 270.51 beta drivers, which appears to solve the freezing issue on Nvidia cards... or at the very least, reduces their likelihood dramatically.

I also noticed a huge performance improvement over the 266 drivers. This definitely appears to be the solution we were waiting for.
