NOTICE:
Nvidia has just released some official 270.51 beta drivers, which appears to solve the freezing issue on Nvidia cards... or at the very least, reduces their likelihood dramatically.

I also noticed a huge performance improvement over the 266 drivers. This definitely appears to be the solution we were waiting for.

installing it now on 64 bit, using geforce gtx 260 on desktop pc

had the freezes both in dialogue cut-szenes and while running through the cities, gonna try this new update now

*i use DX11

2 hours played - no freezes at all, usually they came every 15 minutes - gonna test further in the evening

I updated my graphics drivers yesterday and the freeze problem got worse than ever. That was the Nvidia "recommended" 266 drivers. Gonna try updating to the 270.51 beta drivers as people have mentioned. Will return with the result.

I got NVIDIA GeForce GT330 2GB

Edit: the beta drivers did indeed work to remove the freeze problem. Cutscenes however can still result in a lower framerate, but as mentioned, no freezes.

Saw the topic of this thread and read a few posts but - I admit - not all of it.

One theory: could these periods where the game "freezes" be it waiting for the graphics hardware to reset after a crash? I read elsewhere that this game heavily uses some graphics features that can mean that it is quite sensitive to overclocking of the GFX card, and might tax the graphics hardware even at stock speeds. Sometimes, when graphics cards detect an issue, they "soft reboot", which manifests as a sudden pause - or delay - in the game or application.

I installed the 270.51 beta drivers today for my GTX260M & played three hours straight, dx11, high settings, high res textures on, and AAx2. Did not freeze once!!!

Overjoyed!

I tried to install the new beta drivers last night, but the install failed for some reason. Great.

it says that the 8800GTX is supported with these drivers...you sure you got the 64 bit drivers?

I've completely stopped playing Dragon Age 2 because of this issue. I am totally up to date on all drivers and my system is more than capable of running the game. [ It ran lovely before this issue. ]
It'll happen anywhere from a few minutes to a few seconds in between freeze-spurts.
My dialogue does NOT continue until the lag/freeze ends.

I also see freezes on NVidia GeForce 8800. After I upgraded to latest drivesrs, situation got worse: now alt-tab doesn't have any effect.

Also my rogue Hawke slows down dramatically during combat. It is not smooth and fast as it used to be. Unfortunately enemies do not slow down.

Am using WIN7 64bit o/s, 9500GT graphics, is all updated. Freezes with audio still going ok. Intermittent yet consistent pausing and slowing in graphics. Endured it for up to 5min then turned it off and shant play it til problem resolved. No crash reports as didn't let it get that far. No known interference from anti virus or anti spyware or firewall. My game version is a Steam download. I also have plenty of ram and hd space so that isn't the issue either.

Beta version of video driver helped. Still, there are rare slowdowns ~5sec.

I tried a clean install with the beta driver, and it worked the second time. Thought it might have fixed the issue, but during the final battle with Meredith, my computer crashed twice, and the third time I missed some of the final death scene because it kept freezing and unfreezing.

At this point, I'm moving on to other games. Too little, too late unfortunately.

Nvidia beta drivers fixed it for me. Cutscenes finally work without crashing my computer or freezing the game for a couple min. I went from 25 fps (standing around 15 fps moving) to 50 - 55 fps moving (dx11, x2AA vertical sync on, 1920x1080) with high resolution pack, on gtx 285. cant wait to get a gtx 570. (in about 2 weeks i think) and see what i can get then.

I've been having this issue, though not in a game breaking causing me to crash kind of way. Just every now and then- especially in battle, it seems- the dialogue and sound effects jump and everyone sounds as if they're in some sort of weird dance remix.

I'm using an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250; on a laptop- which runs it fine, apart from those moments and it lags like hell.

Hopefully it'll be fixed for ATI cards soon :/

I also ended up with those freezes every few minutes or so.
they're more annoying then gamebreaking, as they only last for about a second, but they're still there and nothing seems to get rid of those short freezes.

funny thing with my da2: i only got the problem AFTER installing patch 1.01. before that (out of the box) i had no problem at all !

I'm already thinking about reinstalling the game and ignore that patch as i only got the freeze problem afterwards.

off topic: could you guys at bioware look at the dlc checking system for da:o ? every once in a while i end up with dlc showing as "not registered" even though i bought all of it.
I even bought the dlc's for me1 and 2 including the stuff that only changes outfits, and all da2 dlc as of yet(in other words: bought a signature edition ;), but no problems there, its just da:o thats not working as it should.

System:
AMD Phenom II X4 955 (3.2Ghz)
4GB Ram
Radeon HD 6970 (2GB)
All drivers are up to date, so no problems there.

I have been getting random freezes while playing Dragon Age II, which just started happening a week or two ago.  Until then I experienced no freezes whatsoever in Dragon Age II, and I played it a LOT since it hit the shelves.

I remembered that Microsoft Windows Update had a driver update for my nVidia GeForce 9600 GSO 512 not long ago, so I tried rolling back to the previous video driver in Device Manager, and now it seems the freezes are gone.

Perhaps this information will help others as well.

I started playing again today after perhaps a week of not playing. I started a fresh game when I saw that a new patch and new recommended drivers had been released. I have not experienced this freeze problem until today. It freezes mostly in conversations, and can be pretty laggy otherwise.

As I said, this is the first time I have experienced this. DA2 has now been rendered un-playable for me.

I believe this issue is related to DirectX11, but that's all I've been able to figure out. Switching to DirectX 9 removes the problem. It ran perfectly, no hiccups at all with DirectX 9 but I was getting the major freezing during cut scenes with DirectX 11. I think my hardware is good enough to run this game with directX 11, but it's not really playable right now with those freezes. I can run it with DirectX 9, but as many people have pointed out, it also greatly reducs the graphics quality and therefore the enjoyability of the game, and let's face it, many of the gameplay elements of DragonAge Origins have been removed... so really, all we have here for enjoyment is storyline and graphics. :P Take those away, and we got nothing....

I'm pretty sure that older video cards such as my 9800M GS are going to have difficulty, because when I checked the NVIDIA control panel, it says that DirectX Support is DirectX 10, but at the same time, it said the DirectX Run-time version is 11.... so apparently it doesn't actually support DirectX 11 through it's hardware... it's a software renderer it seems, which of course.... can't be good.

Anyway, maybe I don't know what I'm talking about and I'm just pointing out the obvious. More than likely, we may have to simply wait and hope that a patch can fix this issue. I doubt tweaking things will get rid of it. Or we may just have to upgrade our hardware to enjoy the benefits of DirectX 11. :( Another victory for Microsoft and computer manufacturer's everywhere. :P

I play the game on an Acer Aspire 8930 with a Geforce 9600M GT on Vista. It came with an Nvidia driver 196.xx from 2009 and the game played fine on that driver. Yesterday i thought to upgrade the drivers to the 266.58_notebook_winvista_win7_32bit_international_whql but that's when the crap started, freezing for moments and sometimes total freezing. I had to use the Sweeper fromGuru3D to remove all driver related stuff and installed the 195.62 driver. Now it functions pretty okay but changing to for instance the inventory screen is a bit slow now, but doable.

So the rule that 'upgrading drivers to the newest available is a must' is not always a good thing to follow. Image IPB

266.58  are NOT the newest NVDIA drivers and have some trouble with DA2 (I couldn't play DA2 with these drivers either)

You must install NVIDA Beta drivers 270.51 to solve the freezing problem!!!

Been getting this more and more each play through of the game.
Audio stops but the game keeps going, characters still lip sync and move around then pause as the end of the line before picking up where the audio stopped.

I have not read through every page of posts.

The game plays fine for me until I install the Black Emporium DLC. As soon as I installed Black Emporium the freezes described here started.

My solution, delete the DA2 folder and reinstall the game and DO NOT install any DLC from EA. Once I reinstalled the game without the DLC I have not had one freeze.

By the way people, you are not talking to or about BioWare anymore. BioWare no longer exists, it's all EA now and that means it goes down hill from here.
