I am compleetly not agreed with the DLC's "idea" about DA2 crashes and performance issues!
1. Update your NVIDIA drivers to version >= 270.51 + choose default 3D to "quality" settings
2. Install game + hi-res textures, install all desired DLCs, update game with the last 1.02 patch! (strange, but it really helps! only after it I can say that DA2 has its release, but not the beta test!;)
3. Set game's video settings to DX11 and "quality". Play, have fun.)))
All steps are tested on my PC's configuration below:
---
CPUID: AMD Phenom™ II X4 B55 Processor
GPU 1: GeForce 9800 GT
Graphics Driver 270.51 (8.17.12.7051)
Microsoft Windows 7 , Build 7600
DirectX 10.0 (6.1.7600.16385)
---

Updated my EVGA Nvidia 260 GTX driver to version 270.61 with directX 11 on. Notice no actual
freezing in game and dialog for now. Continuing testing and will update my progress.

I believe this issue is related to DirectX11, but that's all I've been able to figure out. Switching to DirectX 9 removes the problem. It ran perfectly, no hiccups at all with DirectX 9 but I was getting the major freezing during cut scenes with DirectX 11. I think my hardware is good enough to run this game with directX 11, but it's not really playable right now with those freezes. I can run it with DirectX 9, but as many people have pointed out, it also greatly reducs the graphics quality and therefore the enjoyability of the game, and let's face it, many of the gameplay elements of DragonAge Origins have been removed... so really, all we have here for enjoyment is storyline and graphics. :P Take those away, and we got nothing....

I'm pretty sure that older video cards such as my 9800M GS are going to have difficulty, because when I checked the NVIDIA control panel, it says that DirectX Support is DirectX 10, but at the same time, it said the DirectX Run-time version is 11.... so apparently it doesn't actually support DirectX 11 through it's hardware... it's a software renderer it seems, which of course.... can't be good.

Anyway, maybe I don't know what I'm talking about and I'm just pointing out the obvious. More than likely, we may have to simply wait and hope that a patch can fix this issue. I doubt tweaking things will get rid of it. Or we may just have to upgrade our hardware to enjoy the benefits of DirectX 11. :( Another victory for Microsoft and computer manufacturer's everywhere. :P

My game freezes and I'm using a GTX 580 card thre best available. It just can't run DX 11 without crashing. Just got the card lastg week. Runs all other games on DX 11 perfectly except this one. It's BIKOWARE and this CRAP nothing else. I won't be buying Bioware again. Their names trash with me now.

I'm relieve to report I had finished the game with no freezing in the game or dialog. Evga Nvidia driver version 270.61 with DirectX 11 on seems to be effective at least for me. There is an issue which I think its a game patch, not video driver issue, where in act 3 when you battle the main villian, (Im not giving that spoiler), when you get stunned I think all, and I mean all, the character animations including backround music and effects are continiously moving but appears to be like in a loop like my PC is still LOADING, but NOT in a pause state like before.

So I'm patiently waiting for the new game patch now.

Freezing here too.
Nvidia GeForce GT120 drivers are updated to the latest. And freezing did start right after that.

I'm a pit of loss...

I'm not sure if this is still living but I think I just should add in my specs and so on to help you fix it:

Bug: temporary freezing in dialogue and after that jumping in the conversation which results in no way to hear what they said (no problem with my former computer)
CPU: AMD Athlon II X3 450 (3x3.2Ghz)
GPU: sapphire radeon hd 6850 (running at 11.2 CCC drivers, I know that there are new once which I haven't tried since they didn't say they were fixing the bug in the release note, but I'll try them in a while)
RAM: 4gb ddr3
Motherboard: Asus m4a78lt-m le
Setting: Everything maxed, including high texture pack, except for AA which is set on x4 (if I remember correctly)
Resulotion: 1650x1080

If anyone is still having this issue with the most recent video drivers, please send me a PM and we'll investigate further. Thanks.

My Steam-delivered DA2 installation completely locked up a few times with the 760.51 drivers. Audio was still playing but I had to use task manager to close the game.

Just got the 760.61 drivers yesterday - will keep you updated if it happens again.

Machine specs in my sig.

OK screen just went black after loading a saved game. Reloaded the same save after closing DA2 and it worked perfectly.

I should also note that the screen was only black after hitting alt+tab. previous to this it looked like a wainscot wall except all black and white.

Well, I have Gigabyte GV-N570OC-13I graphics card here. Couldn't play Dragon Age 2 in dx11 at all, until Gigabyte released a BIOS update for my graphics card in the mid April. After I updated the graphics card's BIOS, crashes stopped completely. I now play in dx11 with everything on maximum and with hi-res textures installed. I have the latest nVidia drivers installed. Yesterday everything was perfect, but just now I got a freeze. I had to close the game with the task manager. Not sure if I waited for 30 seconds or not. Seems to be quite a long freeze to me. Next time I will wait and see if it will unfreeze.

I'm having this issue myself.  The game freezes and periodically stalls as described in this thread.  My drivers are recent.  Is there a designated fix for this?  The first post is not a cohesive answer but simply question and there is mixed advice throughout the thread.

I'm running:
Windows 7 (64 bit) - Direct X 11
v1.03
i7-2630QM
10.0 GB DDR3
nVidia 460M (1.5 GB RAM)
