I had this problem but it seems to have disappeared once I disabled the high res textures pack and reloaded. My GPU is a 9600GT, so I only have 512mb. I've had the beta drivers (267.24) from the beginning and otherwise am running on "high" settings and Dx11 renderer.
In a couple of the cases I did see a "connection lost to server" message around the slowdown, though I don't know if that was the cause or the effect. I have the D2D version of the game, so the server connection is to EA.
I've also seen some people recommend the alternate drivers as well some who've eliminated the problem by rolling back to the latest non-beta Nvidia drivers.
It's not the cause if video drivers fix the issue, it just seems to be an effect.

A tip from me is to CTRL + ALT + DEL and if you are lucky, you end up in windows, and you can then klick the program and the problem is gone, untill it strikes again

edit: alt tabbing doesn't do anything, freezes still occur a lot afterwards. Relaunching the game doesn't work either.

This worked for me on my crashing problem with GTX570. Noticed a huge improvement on framerate in Very High quality. Still crash from time to time if I turn on Screen Space Occusion. But at least I can stroll through Lowtown AND the Gallows without crashing once! Try this out if you are having problems.
And oh, Thank you Max Payne, it's one helluva discovery

TEMPORARY WORKAROUND:
We've had reports that alt-tabbing out of the game and back in will prevent this from recurring, at least for a little while.
This works, but it sucks as a workaround.

I don't know if it can be related, but I tried playing without internet connection and I gained a few FPS, but it still freezes normally with SSAO on. Maybe it's trying to check the game online constantly? Another thing that I'm seeing is that the game doesn't seem to use the available resources properly (even DA:O is able to use way more).
My specs: Q6600 2.4GHz, 6GB DDR3 RAM, GTX275. Windows Vista 64 fully updated, nVidia beta drivers (267.24).

The screen goes dark and the words "Loading..." appear in the lower-right area of the screen when this happens. By the time it resumes, I've missed large chunks of the conversation. It's also completely reproducible as it will happen every single time I initiate conversation with Aveline, for example, or at specific dialogue points. Running in DX9 does nothing, neither does disabling the voice track (which is what's freezing) in sound options.

It happens during battles, during cutscenes, during exploring... Heck, it even happens when I minimize DA2!
My system specs are as follows:
- Windows 7 64-bit
- nVidia GeForce GTX 275, build 267.24 (Beta)
- 6 GB RAM
- Intel i7 920 @ ~2,67 GHz
Please fix this BioWare. This is getting too annoying.

and can you guys whip me up a latte as well? Geez....rainmaker4, they're not your slaves....but to confirm an earlier post, i was using old nVidia drivers on my GTX 275 / GTS 250 Combo card, and I updated them and the game has been freezing ever since.
Disagree 100%. I'm not (and other users as well) are not asking anything excessive. But when you pay $60 for a game, you should expect it to at least work.... I didn't pay to be a beta tester

Using an NVidia 260GTX, with 267.24 drivers. I'm going to try the 267.26 Ti driver trick and see what happens.
(Win 7 32-bit, Core 2 Duo 3.4 Ghz, 4 gb RAM, 896 mb vRAM)
Seems to happen regardless of what video settings I use (high res textures, not high res textures, DX11, DX9, etc).
EDIT: Forgot to mention, after I alt-tab back in, I almost invariably see a "Could not connect to EA servers" error message on the left-hand side of the screen.
