I too had this issue, freezes during conversations (also class and gender select). Alt-Tabbing fixed it temporarily. Currently on DX11 and High detail.

My Specs:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz
4GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce GTX 260 (Driver 266.58)

As suggested I upgraded to the 267.26 Beta drivers and that seems to have done the trick.

And mod the driver

I get this issue for about ten seconds on DirectX 11 only.  It happens at the end of every cutscene or dialogue.  DirectX 9 runs perfectly.

I'm using a 9800gt. Funny thing, I started noticing the freezes after updating to the newest beta drivers. It happens randomly after I fiddle with the inventory and come out of it. I'm not sure if it was the drivers, but I've since rolled back to 258.96 drivers. There was also one temporary freeze in which the message "Connection to servers lost" came up.

I am also having this problem.  I am running 260 GTX in SLI, 8 Gig or DDR3 mem, AMD 1100T overclocked at 4 gig.  I have EVGA's Precision on screen display on so that I can check the gpu usage and temp, the usage will drop to 1% or 0% and temps in the 35 to 40c.  I also keep CPUID hardware monitor running in the back so that I can exit the game and quickly check the current cpu and hard drive temp as well as the max temp which was well below the safty range. My gpu drivers now are the 266.58 If anyone comes up with anything please let us know.

The Nvidia drivers with the inf switch fixed the issue, though now I have to be very specific with the what resolution I use due to overscan issues (NVidia overscan compensation sucks.)

I'm having this issue using an ati/amd card, namely a HD 6950. Everything but the sound stops (Dialogue stops too, only background sound goes on), game loses internet connection and everything stays frozen for at least 10 seconds. Any help for this?

It has something to do with DX11. On launch day, I played on DX11 with and without high res textures and I got those temp freezes, and sometimes they would last anywhere from 2 - 5 minutes. If I just wait, eventually the game will continue on like nothing happened.
Today I played pretty much all day, but on DX9 mode(with very high textures) and not a single problem.
The other people reporting problems on DX9 are likely experiencing a different issue, and not the temp freeze.(like crashing?)

I'm using a 5870 and I was getting these temporary freezes. I disabled screen space ambient occlusion, high quality blur and diffusion depth of field and the issue went away. I'm still using high res textures and have the graphics detail set at very high.

Tried to play again today and see if changes in the video options would change anything. With DX9 enabled and video settings turned all the way down to low, and every single option turned off, it still freezes, and still only on the loading screens.
On the two last tries I haven't even been able to get past the first loading screen after the main menu.

I did however manage to tab out for the first time, and since I had both the taskmanager and catalyst control center open I saw what they were showing before the whole computer froze again. Graphics card was at 31 degrees, when it usually goes up to around 60 or 70 when I'm playing games.

The CPU usage was at 100% however, and RAM usage around 3.9 out of 4GB. No graphics problem there I'd say, especially considering I didn't even get into the game before everything froze.

I should add that I still play a load of different games (Like BF:BC2, Crysis, Shattered Horizon, Dead Rising 2 and so on) maxed out without any similar problems, or lag for that matter.

Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
Radeon HD 5870, 1GB, latest drivers (not the beta drivers)
4GB DDR3, 1600MHz
Intel Core i5 Quad Core i5-760, 2.80GHz

Maybe a stupid question, but...how do I uninstall DirectX 11? I can't find it in the control panel tool.

Edit: Nevermind, I saw you can change that in-game.

Same issue. I've had the freezes happen on every graphics setting with and without "DX11" or high-res. My card is an 8800 GT running at 1920 x 1080 resolution. The game otherwise runs great (as long as I don't turn on antialiasing) and my CPU temp is fine (20 C at the time of one of the freezes).

Update the graphic card that worked for me so now its max and no lags or spike or anything. Only thing I think is bad is that His sisters breast is bigger when you learn to play during the Hawke fighting in the beginning, Kinda strange the made her breast smaller after that first Scenario fight.

the .inf modded driver did the trick for me, game runs smooth now. seems like Bioware was expecting Nvidia to have a new driver release out by now. at least we have betas to work with.

Hello!

I'm also having this problem. I can play most parts of the game just fine (no lags, runs smooth most of the time) but just inbetween a conversation the screen will freeze for several seconds (while the audio keeps playing). Than the game will continue without any problems for some minutes until it freezes again. I also have some occasional freezes in the "normal" game mode (walking/fighting) but they are rare. Most freezes happen while in a conversation.

I don't have the high res textures installed. I tried both drivers, the latest offical NVIDA drivers, and the latest NVIDIA Beta-Drivers. It didn't make any difference. Also the ALT-TAB trick doesn't work for me.

However, disabling V-Synch and Anti-Aliaising seemed to help a little bit  (seems I'm getting the freezing not as often as before) but unfortuantely it didn't fix this issue at all. The game still freezes occasionally.

My System:

- Windows 7  Professional, 64bit
- NVDIA Geforce GTS 250, 1GB RAM
- Intel Core Duo E4500, 2.2 GHZ
- 4 GB RAM

I hope Bioware will be able to fix this very annoying bug soon and we will a get a patch that fixes all the freezing (or new NVDIA drivers) as I don't want to mess around with the "inf file"

Also having this issue on my HD5770 1gb under w7x64 (e8400, 6gb ddr2). Same with or without hi res pack.
Running windowed seems to improve recovery time/rate, but not frequency.

Seems like this problem is all driver. Since one specific driver fixes it for most people anyways. If you don't want to mess with inf files, I can't really blame you. Nvidia has been saying thier next major driver release will be "Soon" for a couple of weeks now I think. That should clear up most of these issues.

really get the impression that Bioware did the dx11 code with the next driver release in mind and were expecting it to be out by now. just ****ty timing in that case since Bioware couldn't delay release for this.

I've had a freeze happen right after loading when entering the fereldan imports shop - win7 64-bit, HD5770 1GB, 11.4 beta drivers, playing with everything on high and v-sync disabled.

I've also had a full crash with the 11.2 drivers.

It's possible I'm just luckier today than yesterday, but reverting to Nvidia's 260.99-driver seems to have fixed the problem for me. Worth trying if you don't want to mess around with the .inf

This problem occurs on my rig too, although the freezes typically do not last beyond 30 seconds, probably closer to 15. Occurs more frequently in cutscenes, occaisonally during gameplay. Running DX11 mode with High-res pack installed, every setting turned up to maximum:

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
4 GB DDR2-800
XFX Radeon HD6950 2gb
Windows 7 Professional, 64 bit

I modded the 560 TI's 267.26 driver and installed that for my card (a 260 GTX), and it ran smooth as butter yesterday, no freezes or hiccups. (See http://social.biowar...57702/1#6463470 )

Originally I couldn't get the game past the splash screen at all but was able to resolve that via the NVIDIA beta drivers you guys recommended.

Now I can play (yay) but occassionally run into this issue. It's almost always during a conversation cutscene but sometimes occurs during the random talking that my party does. I can usually resolve it by alt-tabbing out and then back into the game but this causes me to miss some dialogue and the issue seems to reoccur more quickly when I do this.

Intermittent freezes (particularly during dialog) that range between 5s and 30s. The game becomes completely unresponsive and CPU utilization drops to below 5% on all cores.

Settings: DX11, 4x AA, 16x Anis, Very High, SSAO OFF, DDOF OFF, HQB OFF, HQ Textures ON

Troubleshooting:

- Updated Catalyst 11.2 drivers to Catalyst 11.4 Preview drivers, no change
- Updated to Realtek R2.58 HD Audio drivers (onboard), no change
- Reduced CPU/GPU clocks to defaults, no change
- Disabled DA2 Online features (Feedback/Profile), no change

AMD Phenom II 965 (Asus M4A79 MB)
6 GB DDR2-1066
Sapphire Radeon 6970 2GB
Windows 7 64-bit

Changing the inf on the beta drivers didn't work for me. I would really love to play this game for more than twenty minutes at a time without crashes, reboots and game freezes. This is actually the first time I've encountered something game breaking in any console or PC game I've purchased in twenty years. And I played Fallout: New Vegas for a good 120 hours...

That is some crazy good luck you have there! Well... until now that is.

This was happening to me a lot for the last few days. The only way I found to keep it from happening for a while was to exit to game. Set the renderer to DX9, load the game. Load the save. Exit again. Set the renderer back to DX11, and it seemed to last me a while. This is not a perfect fix however.

Today, I finally got to play for a longer stretch of time. I intended to start my real playthrough today. Started over from the beginning, things were smooth through to my arrival in Kirkwall. The first few discussions were fine, until the first battle at the base of the stairs. Onward from there, the game constantly froze during conversations.

Again, alt-tabbing fixed nothing from me. Doing it before did not prevent anything. Doing it during only left me with a black screen for countless seconds.

I just shut down the game and into to just open it up again and play from there, see if that solved the issues. I'll report back later, though I have a feeling its not going to change anything.
