I only have this issue with DirectX 11. I can play very happily on DX 9 and be certain it will never occur.

I have no idea if anyone has posted this workaround or not but like in "Origins" you can set it to be in windowed mode before starting the game then start the game and start playing then pause and set it back to fullscreen ingame, i've done this and I can vouch it works no freezes crashes of any kind for about 4 hours of continued play with Directx11 and all the bells and wistles on so to speak and the high res pack and runs perfect now.

Having this problem in both DX9 and DX11, I altered my refresh rate in the settings .xml to 75 and the problems seemed to occur more frequently, but now more often in combat that during dialogue sequences. I'm not on my gaming rig right now but I was wondering if anybody had experimented with the "Max Pre-Rendered Frames" in the nVidia control panel? Setting it to 0 has fixed similar but not as severe hitches in the past specifically in BioShock.

NEVER set Max Pre-Rendered Frames below 1 I can't remember the issue as of why but I know it's not a good thing.

There is nothing dangerous or undesirable about setting it to 1 or 0 (Anything below 2 has the same effect), all it does is prevent the GPU from rendering future frames ahead of the current frame. A setting below 2 can actually ease the workload on the GPU at the possible expense of framerate.

Setting it to zero then seems like a bad idea still, if what you say is true then it would make the card not render much of anything making it look awful. I myself has always set it to 1 making sure that it atleast makes thing look good.

It treats 1 and 0 as the same, ala it will always attempt to render 1 frame ahead for essentially the reasons you say. Not even sure why 0 is an option to be honest. Still might be worth trying to set it to 1 or 2 from the default 3.

If all else fails I suggest my above workaround for any problems it works for me as it did in Origins.

Has anybody tried using the ForceWare 267.24 Beta drivers? According to nVidia they are identical to the 267.31 except for a single bug fix related to multiple monitors.

UPDATE - Nevermind I can't read, some of you have clearly tried already.

Yep. Didn't work for me on Win 7 64 bit Dx11.
Dx 9 was no problem.

Used the ini file in 267.24 to mo 267.26 and voila DX 11 runs perfect. :D

Same problems.

- freezes apparently randomly, with the same error code someone posted:

The program DragonAge2.exe version 1.0.5174.0 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Action Center control panel.
 Process ID: 1210
 Start Time: 01cbe0371d9799a7
 Termination Time: 515
 Application Path: C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Dragon Age 2\\bin_ship\\DragonAge2.exe
 Report Id:

Along with the warning:
Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

It happens at any time - sometimes in combat, sometimes in dialogue, sometimes while just walking about. Sometimes I'll play for 2 hours without a problem, but most of the time I can get 10 minutes before it crashes.

Sometimes alt-tabbing and coming back kick starts it again, but usually not.

My specs:
Windows 7 64bit, up to date as of last week.
intel i7 k875
8GB Ram
nVidia GTX 460 Driver is the beta just released. I have tried the driver from my manufacturer (Gigabyte) and older versions of the nVidia but it's always the same problem. I've tried completely wiping the driver and reinstalling to no avail.
1920 X 1080 resolution

I've tried reducing the detail, using high res and non-high res.

I'm at a loss. At this point I'm just stopping playing the game. It's just too frustrating.

Ok here's what I did. This fixed the problem for me and now I have zero issues. I have a Gigabyte nVidia GTX 285, I went to the gigabyte support site and downloaded the original drivers for my exact card and installed them. This fixed the lockups but droped the framerate alot, then I did a windows update and downloaded the recomended update for the nVidia card installed that and now evrything works great, no lockups and smooth framerate. I know this may not work for everyone but it did for me, hope it does for you too :)

I don't know how half the people who claim one fix or another works can do so convincingly. I mean, I've played 8 hours straight without a single freeze, and other times I've played for 5 minutes with it freezing to the point of unresponsiveness and me killing it in the task manager.

I've used the 267.26 drivers. I thought it fixed it, but 6 hours later, it froze. Was ok, I needed to go to bed anyways. Today, it litterally froze to the point of unresponsiveness four times in the space of 20 minutes. Then it didn't freeze again for four hours before I finished for the day.

I wouldn't even know where to begin to recreate the problem when I want it to, which means testing any fixes seems incredibly difficult, since it seems so random as to when it's going to occur.

I will say this about one specific aspect of the freezing issue. While I've had dialog freezing as it moved into a cutscene, this is the only type of freeze that has ONLY occurred to me after a long time running the game. The other type of freezing, where the game will just decide to freeze/stutter as you're walking around/in combat can happen 1 minute into the game or 8 hours into the game.

During some cutscenes and combat the game will freeze up for a bit and then come back. Audio sometimes drops when this happens and I have to alt-tab to get it back. Also had the pause and speed up during a few scenes.

Specs:

Windows 7 x64
AMD 11.4 Preview Driver
Core 2 Duo @ 3.2 Ghz
4 Gb ram
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1 Gb
Creative XFi Gamer Sound Card

Game Settings:

1680 x 1020
Vsync Enabled
High Detail
Fullscreen Mode Enabled
4x AA
8x Anistropic

Interesting tid-bit:

I've seen fewer freezes today, since I started running the game with "Run as Administrator". (This is on windows 7 64bit)

That's beside the point though, I'd like to note that I've started noticing some of these freezes coincided with a message that said "Disconnected from Server" ingame. Could these freezes not be related to actual graphics-based problems but instead to a shaky connection to the Dragon Age 2 / EA servers?

Seems to affect all types of GPU's and the AMD preview driver didn't help any.

Had it happen about 8-9 times seems to have been worst in the last hour or so when i was playing earlier. Missed the whole debut scene of Isabella because of it just got audio and the screen froze until the end of the scene.

I'm also having this problem with 2 nVidia GTX 260s in SLI. It happens during gameplay and cutscenes. My FPS will suddenly drop from 30-60 to 1-9. During gameplay I can fix it just by pressing Esc but during a cutscene I have to Alt-Tab. Unfortunately this really isn't a fix because it usually doesn't take long for it to happen again. I notice that when this happens both my GPU's usages are at like 0%. It's like the game just temporarily stops using my graphics acceleration.

Before this I was having another problem. I was getting poor framerates overall when I put the game on High quality. I noticed that my GPU2's usage was only topping out at about 20%. I heard the beta 267.24 drivers would help with SLI and they did. Each card is now topping out at about 70% which isn't great but good enough to get 30-60 FPS on High.

I will try the INF edit trick with the 267.26 drivers tonight to see what that does. I'm expecting a new official driver to be released this Tuesday or shortly thereafter. Hopefully that will fix everything.

Intel core 2 duo 1.7 GHz
ddr2 1066 4 gigs
Nvidia GeForce GTS 450
Windows 7 64 bit
When I first obtained this game I was using an Nvidia GeForce 8800GT Alpha dog edition. This game was on high settings, full screen, 1280x1024 resolution. The game would be on for hours. Longest time the game was on for all at once was about 7 hours. I get the Nvidia GTS 450, installed it, installed latest drivers and ran the game. didn't change the settings. I will play for approximately 10 minutes and the game will began to get very choppy, lock up, then crash. Windows 7 will state that the graphics card has failed but recovered. I ran a full system diagnostics and stress test for 24 hours and everything including the graphics card passed. To get the game to run I must run it with full screen off, medium graphics, direct x 9 1024x768 resolution. Just did a full system cleaning, defragmentation, and optimization and am still experiencing problems. So if anybody knows of a driver I can use for the GTS 450 please notify me. I would greatly appreciate it.

Has anyone tried the DA2 1.01 Beta patch yet?

It doesn't list this specific issue in its fixes but that didn't stop me from remoting in to my home machine to apply it... unfortunately the game is unplayable over VNC (lol).

I hope Bioware will be able to fix this very annoying bug soon and we will a get a patch that fixes all the freezing (or new NVDIA drivers) as I don't want to mess around with the "inf file"

Seems like this problem is all driver. Since one specific driver fixes it for most people anyways. If you don't want to mess with inf files, I can't really blame you. Nvidia has been saying thier next major driver release will be "Soon" for a couple of weeks now I think. That should clear up most of these issues.

really get the impression that Bioware did the dx11 code with the next driver release in mind and were expecting it to be out by now. just ****ty timing in that case since Bioware couldn't delay release for this.

This problem is part driver, but not all. BioWare still needs to optimize their DX11 render path to get some better performance, which definitely seems possible. NVIDIA does still need to work on their drivers though. It's not one-sided.

It's an effect, not a cause, if video drivers for some have fixed the issue.

That's an emergency patch to fix players who weren't able to save their game. That's it. As you can imagine, not being able to save is a pretty big problem.

I get these long pauses all the time, both during combat and cutscenes.

Windows Vista 64 bit
GTS 250 1024 mb graphics card
9 gigs of ram
core i7 320 processor

My game runs on Direct X 10, not 11.  Also, it is not consistent.  I can replay certain sequences by reloading and they run smoothly, yet at other times the game just cramps up and stops.  Sometimes it recovers, a lot of the time not.  When it does recover from these stops it takes around 45 seconds to even two minutes.

I've Ctrl+Alt+Delete screened out of the game, then re-enter it and the game starts working relatively normally again, but is usually choppy afterwards for the rest of the session.
