Has anyone tried the DA2 1.01 Beta patch yet?

It doesn't list this specific issue in its fixes but that didn't stop me from remoting in to my home machine to apply it... unfortunately the game is unplayable over VNC (lol).

edit: darn wonky forums... *grumble*

That's an emergency patch to fix players who weren't able to save their game. That's it. As you can imagine, not being able to save is a pretty big problem.

It solves the non-existing drive issue too, that only happened when using the DX11 renderer. And maybe it's related to that or maybe it's an unlisted fix, but after that I'm able to change the AA from inside the game without crashing in the process.

I'll see if , by some miracle, it helps with the freezes too. However, I don't keep my hopes very high.

I have no idea if anyone has posted this workaround or not but like in "Origins" you can set it to be in windowed mode before starting the game then start the game and start playing then pause and set it back to fullscreen ingame, i've done this and I can vouch it works no freezes crashes of any kind for about 4 hours of continued play with Directx11 and all the bells and wistles on so to speak and the high res pack and runs perfect now.

Right now I'm playing without *any* clue it'll freeze out. I did this trick Flameblade87 told about just because it fits my suspicions, but right now I:

- had game sessions before where NOTHING froze, so it can be just the same case;
- just alt+tabbed, if it freezes now on I'll tell here;

But you guys with the same problem should try this too, resuming/loading/starting a game after going in 'Config' on launcher and setting not fullscreen. And then switching to fullscreen only when ingame, not pre-menus. And please, give the feedback here.

ps: forgot to tell I'm playing for 4 hours straight, no freezes.

Happens to me too all the time. CTRL-AL-DEL seems to help until the next one.

That didn't work for me.  I got slowdown on the first cutscene I encountered.  Once again GPU Usage went to 0%.  Running the game with DirectX 9 works though.

yeah well.. it could be the 4-5 alt+tab's I did but it just froze/crashed like before again, **ck it. The worst it's to not be able to figure out a pattern on all this. I wouldn't want to be a Bioware tester right now... tough debug.

Anyways, I don't know if I'm willing to play anymore tonight but I'll come with more results if I have them. Good luck all.

Our graphics team is continuing to work with ATI and Nvidia on this but we don't have an answer yet.

I can confirm that the "Lost connection with Dragon Age servers" message is a symptom, not a cause (it's simply timing out due to the game hanging). Also, the BETA patch is not expected to fix this. I've grabbed some additional data from this thread and will pass it on to our engineers.

Thanks for your patience. We'll keep working at it.

Thanks for the update and continued effort, Rob and the rest of the team at BioWare.  It can't be fun dealing with an angry community after a buggy release, but remember, everybody's upset because they really want to play this cool game.
In other words, we hurt you because we love you.  You just make us lose our minds sometimes.  :D

Happened twice to me so far (and it didn't recover the second time) been about 6 hours playtime apart though, so it's not a huge annoyance, just dont really want it happening.

Thanks for this post Rob, It's *VERY* nice to know you guys are aware of this, so explicitly. Right know I'm very confident this will be dealt with by you.

To update my earlier post, I did see a reoccurence of the problem yesterday while playing. I went ahead and changed the render choice to Dx9 and in a number of hours since have not seen an issue.

Since that has not worked for everyone, I wonder if people might report what cards they have used when it worked and when it didn't. I have a fairly old card, a 9600GT. I'm wondering if we will see a correlation between older cards seeing Dx9 solve the problem versus newer cards not seeing the same success.

Thanks for you reply Rob. I really want to play the game without the freezing! Loved Dargon Age so much!

I've tried every suggested fix so far, with the exception of modifying the nVidia Beta drivers, and nothing has worked. DX11 and DX9 modes with all texture resolution combinations (Excluding Low) still exhibit the same behaviour. When the game is running I can get a consistent 30-40 FPS regardless of what settings I use, I'm happy with that given my hardware specifications so performance is not an issue. If it helps I had similar problems with pauses and crashing in the Demo.

I'm running a GeForce 9800 GT on Windows 7 32Bit with SP1 and the latest nVidia Beta drivers for my card which state "Improved Conpatibility" for Dragon Age 2. Like I said I'm not willing to modify drivers meant for another card as I'm not sure what affect that will have on other games and applications. I'm not about to potentially damage my experience with other games simply to play Dragon Age 2.

Just to repeat my post in the other thread: turning on triple buffering did the trick for me.
I did everything else too for my ATI 5850 (used 11.4 catalyst preview drivers, turned off anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering), but this was the one thing that made it work.

Trying this, so far so good. Using NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M though.

EDIT: Not working. Still freezing.

Going to try it now, here's a 5850@11.4 too. Thanks.

Same problem here...Nvidia GTS 250 with Beta drivers. When I played the game for the first time, it ran accurate for hours. The next day the freezing problem occured and never left since...
I tried playing in every setting, but it did not help at all.
The game also suffers from the wrong drive issue.

Hello, i have it too, i have tried the new nvidia drivers and playing in dx10 and dx9 and i get it in both.

i assume they are working on a fix to this, as its quite poor for a game of this quality to run like this, are people just getting it on nvidia or is it also on ATI?

Just chiming in with a bit more data. Using Win7(x64), 8GB OS Memory, GeForce 8800 GTS 512 (512 MB), CPU: Intel Core2Duo 8400@3GHz. Screen resolution: 1280x1024. No High Textures pack.

Experienced also game freezes, especially during cutscenes, but also during regular gameplay, which only got temporarily fixed by alt tabbing out and in again. Happened with various settings, including both DX9 & DX11 and varying quality settings. Switching ambient occlusion on seemed to increase the frequency of hangups, though thanks to the randomness of the problem it's hard to say whether this really figured into the problem.

Tried the "dirty" fix by installing the 267.26 driver meant for the 560Ti, by modding the inf-file. To my surprise, the game did run for several hours without any freezes, DX11, high quality setting, even with ambient occlusion on. Whether this was mere chance I do not know, but I thought I'd add this for troubleshoot feedback purposes. I don't know what this driver does so differently compared to 267.24 (where I did experience freezes). Maybe a different profile setting for DA2 compared to the previous version? If anything, the sound seems to play a little less smoothly (minuscule slowdowns now and again), but no freezes. If I do experience freezes later on, I'll update my post. Hope this helps.

-Fixed save game issues on single core machines
-Fixed game asking for non-existent drives
-Fixed release control issues where some players were unable to unlock correctly
-Fixed a Steam-specific issue related to VO not playing after switching languages**

Those are just the fixes they chose to list for that 1.01 beta patch... they also fixed the shield bug (unlimited armor) so there are undoubtedly a variety of other small fixes.

Hi....

I did a digital download of the game and I am starting to really get pissy pants with this....

I have the issue in this thread, and I downloaded the VERDE RELEASE 267.24 FOR NOTEBOOKS for my GeForce 9700M GT...

Still have the problem...

Should I try another Nvidia driver??? I have been at this for too long and I being a mom, I dont get a lot of time to play, so wasting time with bugs just doesnt make me a happy camper...

Suggestions???

Has anyone noticed a difference between full screen mode and windowed mode??

I'm on an i7 920, 6GB Ram, GeForce GTX 285 and Win7 64-bit.

The following issues I don't experience in any other games:

1)In DX9 there is major artefacting, no matter what the resolution or graphical settings. Green boxes pop up, random pop-ins of black lines (for a split second). I had to resort to using the DX11 setting instead
2) Using DX11, even on the lowest graphical setting, the game feels very stuttery and 'uneven'. Moving around and moving camera around would be plagued with fast and slow acceleration, it's very slight but terrible for play.
3) Under DX11 (high res texture pack, 2x AA) I experience a lot less of the artefact issues in DX9.
4) I've had two instances where the game froze for about a minute. I just had to sit there, waiting for something to happen, eventually it sorted itself out.

I don't feel like it's time to upgrade my video card yet and feel ashamed I spent the money on PC when I should've got it for xbox 360 instead.

I'm wondering if these issues might be fixed in the future. Obviously it seems like it's my card, but as I've said, I've not had issues before and I can't replicate them elsewhere.

TEMPORARY WORKAROUND:
We've had reports that alt-tabbing out of the game and back in will prevent this from recurring, at least for a little while.

I have the freezing slowdown issue, sometimes it resolves itself if left for a few minutes or a combat ends but if it happens during a cinematic dialogue the ONLY way of resolving it is Alt-Tab when it works or Ctrl Alt Del and then cancel as that automatically switches the view to desktop and back.

I will also say if it happens inc ombat or when moving the fastest way to resolve it is to hit ESC and get to the game menu and then press resume as that gets rid of the slowdown straight away..well until it happens again, which it always does.
