I've been having the same problems and figured I've post my own stories and computer specs to help. This sounds a lot like what has been happening to me. The game will lock up, the music usually continues on in the background, and most of the time my keyboard still functions. If I'm on Ventrilo with friends, I can still talk to them even though the game is frozen. I cannot even CAD for awhile until things catch back up. Once things do catch back up most of the time if I have, in fact, tried to Alt+Tab or CAD then the game crashes.

OS: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
RAM: 8GB DDR2 RAM
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 1gb
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 3.0ghz Quad-Core
Resolution: 1280 x 800
Graphics Detail: High
Anti-Aliasing: 8
Filtering: 16
High Resolution Textures: Enabled
Ah, right, and the beta 1.01 patch as well.

Unfortunately, Dragon Age 2 remains the only game to date that I can't run on max settings. I've had to live with High instead of Very High. Sadface.

thanks mate, glad they know, as there seems to be a huge range of users effected and its odd to see Nvidia and ATI guys in the same boat Image IPB

does the old driver install actually work? just debating reverting back a few drivers for a while, must admit its a strange error as i actualy got a good 4 hours in with no slow downs, then suddenly i couldn't get away from them.

Although Rob mentioned that the connection loss is a symptom of the issue, I can reproduce the hanging by simply unplugging the network cable. It however does not solve the issue completely, but with the network cable unplugged it feels like it doesn't happen that frequently.

I hoping for a fix very soon, this lowers my game experience by a lot, especially if it happens during dialogues. =(

This makes me wonder if the issue occurs when the game is trying to connect to the Bioware Social site.  I haven't really paid attention, but I'll try to notice if this happens when getting an achievement or something

Got the same problem, trying the beta drivers now, will report back though I'm not too hopeful

EDIT: Hasn't fixed them, but it has made the game run smoother, and the crashes less frequent

I have an old 1G 9500GT video card running on AMD Phenom Quad with 64b Win7. I get the freeze problem if the game uses dx11 with High graphic details settings. No problem anymore after I applied the 267.26 beta driver workaround.

I modded the 560Ti drivers as mentioned earlier in the thread so that my GTX260M would accept them, and played probably 20 hours of the game without one freeze. None of the actual beta drivers or official drivers for my card worked. The beta ran fine.

Running in DX9 mode was also a good workaround but DX10.1/11 looks so much better and the 560 beta driver let me run with that.

I had no problems until I upgraded the nvidia drivers from 260.99 to 266.58,
then the freezes started. Downgraded again and the feezing stopped.

Running 2 x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 275 in 1920x1080 on Win7 64bit.

I have been experiencing the same problem and contactted EAdragonage tech support. I am running Windows 7 64-bit, my computer is an ASUS G72GX with 6GB RAM, an nVidia GeForce GTX 260M and Processor Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU P8700 @ 2.53GHz, 2533 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s). I tried the game with and without the new drivers, using Dx 9 and 11 and at all resolution settings and still no help. Anyway this is the response I received from Support:

"I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you so far.

I have gone through the e-mail and found that you are facing problem with the crashing of the game "Dragon Age II". I am sorry to hear that you came across such an incident.

Unfortunately the game is not tested on Windows 7 or 64 bit environment. There is a work around that you can try but still there is no guarantee about it. You can try to run the game as administrator, to run the game as administrator:

1. Right-click on the shortcut icon of the game on your desktop.
2. Choose the option "Run as Administrator".
3. Choose to allow the game.

If the game still not runs properly, Please try to play it in Compatibility mode. Please visit the following link for the steps to play the game in compatibility mode:
http://www.sevenforu...ility-mode.html

I truly appreciate your understanding regarding the issue."

I find this interesting in that 1) Windows 7 has been out for 28 months so why wouldn't the game have been tested in that environment and 2) on the package it lists Windows 7 as one of the recommended OS's.

I get the same problem. I went nearly my entire first playthrough without it and then it started during some of the final conversations. Now in my early second playthrough it is happening.

Specs

Intel® Core™ i7 CPU 860 @ 2.80GHz
8GB RAM
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition (build 7600), 64-bit

ATI Radeon HD 5770

I think this would be solved for half of everyone if people with Nvidia 8xxx,9xxx, and 2xx graphics cards stopped trying to use the DX11 renderer or Very High settings.

This is happening to me, too - and with enough frequency that the game is simply unplayable.

The first time I attempted the play the game, hitting F5 was a guaranteed 30 second freeze. This hasn't recurred so far.

The freezes now seem to happen right about the time new enemies spawn, visible or no. Usually right at the end of of one wave of enemies - or leaving dialogue that immediately segways into combat. Currently, it also occurs immediately when I load my latest save game (there are, coincidentally, darkspawn nearby). I haven't made it very far, so the enemy/spawn correlation may be a coincidence.

My specs:
Windows 7 Home Premium X64
Intel Q9550 (2.83Ghz Quad Core)
4GB RAM
GeForce GTX 280 w/ latest non-beta drivers (266.58)
Auzentech X-Fi Prelude Audio

I am using the Impulse version of the game, running with Emporium, Prince, LE content, and Hi-Res texture pack installed (NOTE: disabling hi-res textures and setting the game to low quality has no effect on the freezes, nor does resolution or any other graphics setting). However, the freezes ONLY occur in DX11 mode (shame DX9 looks so awful).

I have also noticed that both my CPU and GPU usage drops to idle/0 when the freezes occur. Video memory usage is at about 90% and system memory usage is at about 50%.

Hope this helps - because right now, I absolutely cannot play this.

This is absolute nonsense. I have a GTS250  with 1GB. I don't have the High-Res textures installed and tried out almost every setting (DX9/DX11/VSynch on/off/ AA on/off, etc.) and I'm always getting the freezes. No matter if I'm trying to use low or high settings.

But from reading this thread it seems everyone who has reported the freezing is using Win7 64Bit. So IMO there seems definately be somekind of Windows 7/graphics driver related issue causing the freezing.

I started getting this issue only after upgrading my nvidia drivers from an older 254.x release to the new 267.24 beta drivers. I'm on win7 64-bit with a Geforce 9600M GS.

I'm sorry but your wrong. I'm running Win Vista/64 bit and I get the slowdown and freeze.

Running Nvidia 250 with beta drivers, high tex pack, and Beta fix to no avail. It's not a windows 7 thing, it's a graphic thing by the game. Has to be.

I just reverted to the 258.96 nvidia drivers and the hangs and "server disconnected" message have gone away. Just played for 30-40mins without a hiccup.

its not a 64bit thing either, im running windows 7 32bit and getting it occasionaly, though between the modded driver and starting the game in windowed mode, then switching the fullscreen once ingame, as well as disabling my 2nd monitor has greatly cut down on the frequency of the freezes. I get maybe one in a 4 hour session. its usualy about time for a break when it happens anyways :P

DX10 and DX11  use the same renderer. DX11 only adds new features to the DX10.1 renderer. As far as DA2 is concerned true DX11 is DA2 + DX11 renderer + Very High in the graphics settings.  A DX10 or 10.1 card can handle DX11 renderer + High + High resolution textures.  The extra features that  DX11 supports that 10 doesn't, are added by the Very High option. Users who don't have a true DX11 graphics card can't even set the Very High option. It's disabled.  High + DirectX 11 renderer works fine on DX10.1 cards.

From wikipedia:

Direct3D 11 is a strict superset of Direct3D 10.1 — all hardware and API features of version 10.1 are retained, and new features are added only when necessary for exposing new functionality. This helps to keep backwards compatibility with previous versions of DirectX.

Actually getting the same graphic freeze error running Windows XP (yes, still using it), DX9.0c with GTX460 on the 266.58 drivers.

Have installed the beta 267 drivers to see if this improves performance.

I also get these random hick-ups. At first I thought my HDD crapped out. It's especially unnerving during dialogue, though it also happens outside of it. My specs:

W7 64bit
i5 760 2,8 GHz
Radeon HD 6800 (1 GB); Cat. Version: 11.2, Driver: 8.01.01.1123
4 GB Ram

Well, I can say that I've had a 90m session without any graphic glitches since the installation of the beta drivers.

Sadly I can't say the same. I installed the beta Catalyst 11.4 -no change. I'm in the Deep Roads now and the intervals between the freezes seems to be getting worse. They are still totally random, though (meaning e.g. reloading a cutscene wich had freezes before will yield the same cutscene with smooth playback)

I have done everything that this forum and other forums have told me and im still getting freezes
all my drivers are up to date i have turn this off turned that off and still getting freezes imo if this was not ready to launch it shouldnt have been released, this isnt an online game so it should run smoother then one but all i have encountered are issues from the day this game was launched it took my 3 hours to get the game to work and now i cant got longer then 1 min in between the freezings to even play the game and enjoy it also  ill make sure to make a review stating that this game is a waste of money and dont buy it.

Redundant, but I'm having the same freeze but no crash issues with DX11 & Hi-res pack installted.

Windows 7 64bit
NVIDIA 260m 1G w/ beta drivers
4 gb RAM
ASUS gaming laptop, 2.0 dual core

Game runs great on DX9, but looks . . . last-gen.
