Out of curiosity, did any other players end up encountering an issue where Varric clearly states that all of the companions, short of Isabella anyway, end up having to part ways with him?

For my playthrough, Isabella only stuck around for only Act 2 until I ended up having to give her up as a result of refusing her quest to address the Qunari problem. Hawke did end up sleeping with her at one point, but overall he ended up romancing Merrill completely by the end of the game. Clearly, there is no reason why Isabella should have been the only companion to stick by me as I didn't completely romance her and she ended up leaving halfway through the story anyway. Is this the default in the ending scene despite the facts of the story of our Hawke?

Nah, it's not the default one. Well, I doubt it. I romanced Fenris and went away with him at the end. It clearly stated also that all companions part away, except the one you romanced.

Through, I must admit I hoped for a 'last act' where we would have been able to help Cassandra, but it looks like it will be the main plot of Dragon Age 3: Warden is missing, so is the Champion. Both saved by Flemeth.

Just can imagine what they will come up with in the third game.

I don't get that. I romanced Merrill to completion. I slept with Isabella at one point in the game, but that was it. I have no idea why it insists that she stuck with me when she didn't even stick around past Act 2.

I romanced Anders to completion, and also had Isabella as my 'companion who stayed'. I also slept with her, but it was long over by the endgame.
