I would actually request the Bioware expand on the original proposal of the OP.   They should work diligently to take out anything that takes us away from the action, the story, the quest, etc.   Minigames like hacking, bypassing, planet scanning for resources, etc. are all obvious examples of things that take us away from the real action.
.

Sorry but i have to stongly disagree .. mini-games have a bog purpose .. they break the monotony of fighting non-stop ... imagine a piano note in which you just keep bounding the same paino key over and over .. it gets boring very quickly no matter how good the player or the piano is .. that's the same case .. but it also has rules/standards that need to be met in order for it to work .. in detail below.

-If the Mini-games occur too often (and don't have much variety) they will be a source of boredom themselves.

-If the game is oversaturated with too many varied mini-games it could feel like a disjointed mess as the main gameplay will feel like just another mini-game among the lot.

-Mini-games need to be engaging and rewarding, in also in some cases tense (as it is a self-contained experiance losing in it won't affect the rest of the game that much .. so making it challenging/hard i
s ok).

If those point are addressed the mini-games will enhance the experaince greatly .. the best examples of mini0games in an RPG IMO was FF7 ... they were just brilliant .. first introduced as parts of  the story events (High-way motorbike battle chase / Submarine battle / Skiing / .. etc etc) .. then later on you can replay them in some arcade area you can visit whenever you want .. everyone of those games met the criteria above and enhanced the expriance a lot ... and i think Bioware has a lot of work to do in ME3 to make the mini-games actually fun and pace them correctly.

I like Mass Effect (PC) hacking, mostly because it's extremely short and easy.

My thoughts exactly.

A few mini games here and there, as long as they are fun and fast, are ok. The problem, as you said, is the pacing.

Bioware went too far in ME2, there are a lot of hacking/bypassing in ME2 without a real reason other than slowing down your progress.

I really hope they fix this in ME3.

Same here .. i think the could start by adding some RPG elements back to hacking (or the entire game for the matter .. which is something i hear they promised) .. by getting the RPg element back a lot of the complains the people have will go away automatically.

Hacking/Bypassing has levels of diffculty .. and depending on how many points you have in your "squad's tech rating" you can completely bypass the hacking mini-game that is one level lower than your rank.

Hacking/Bypassing has four diffculties .. (Easy / Normal / Hard / Extreme) having the ranks (1 /  2 / 3 / 4)

If your Tech rank is 2 a device that has the rank no.1 (easy) will be bypassed/hacked automatically .. the max rank tech rank is of course 4 ... so you will always have to hack rank no.4 computers yourself no matter your rank (actually won't be able to start hacking them unless your tech rating is sufficient to begin with).

Also .. failing to hack a device should have some concequance the same way succeeding has a reward .. the penalty could range from losing the object/money/upgrade you were hacking for  permanently (in some rare cases) to losing some credit or raising the security measures a rank (so if your rank isn't high enough you won't be able to hack it until you raise your rank sufficiently).

And for all that to work properly first and foremost the mini-game itself needs to be fun and engaging .. i like the hacking mini-game from Deus Ex 3 psudeo "Sarif Industires" site .. i'm not sure if it is ok to post the link here or not .. but feel free to look it up .. a very fun hacknig game (although the version on diaplay is quite clearly a simiplified one)  that will probably be used in the final game (DE3 that is).

It strikes me that hacking in any game is just a filler to add play-time to the whole game. If players like puzzles go off and play puzzle orientated games. RPG's are supposed to br for adventurers and heros and not puzzle players

Hacking has been a part of ME since the beginning. If you don't like hacking then it's not the game you. I can understand why the ps3 crowd would get a little squeamish about hacking but get over it.

 Bring back Omni Gel :(

agreed, my ME1 shepard had like almost 1k omni gel. lol i would just bypass pretty much everything. even without the gel i found ME1 hacking to be way less aggrivating, in ME2 when i come past a bypass or hacking terminal (optional one) usually i will debate weather its worth it, or just pass it up altogether. they are just a drag, and i find little motivation to stop and match up symbols/color paragraphs..

yeah, hacking in ME2 was fine, it was actually a pretty neat minigame.

bypass however was horrible. wasnt hard, it was just stupid.

I am on my fourth run and just needed to vent.

PLEASE, no more time wasting hacking in ME3. It is irritating after the first playthrough. It is also nonsense, why force players to waste time with boring and repetitive mini games just to get a few credits over and over again????

hacking to get though mandatory doors is pointless.

Actually, hacking does suck overall because unlike that other game you have to sit around and wait for the right code to pop up.

the problem with hacking is im doing it for 900 credits.

its almost pointless to me.

i dont think anyone would miss 3 simple hacking minigames. id say more people would apreciate not having to do hacking then those that want to hack a bunch of crates.

If the rewards are good enough, I don't have a problem with it.

Oh shi-... necro thread!

I'll contribute anyway...
The mini-games are fine as long as they only put a small number of them in the game.

As soon as it becomes a mini-game bonanza there's a problem...
This is why I actually hate a Shepard's first visit to Illium in ME2... you have 13 hacks in a row...
In the Citadel of ME1, the quests had you go around talk, and then maybe shoot someone, sometimes they might even shoot back and everybody gets shot and has a good time... also, plenty of ME2's other hub quests are awesome, but I always dread Illium...
At least I get to go see Conrad Verner and Aethyta... they just about stop Illium from being a disaster.

The hacking/bypassing minigames were so easy for me that they were just a pointless waste of time. I prefer "press A to hack", thank you very much.

By the way, if anyone cares, there's a sort of cheat in ME2 for hacking to get extra creds. When you finish bypassing or hacking, mash A as the window closes. Often, the window reopens and you get to hack again, so you get twice the creds. The downside - more boring hacking minigames.

I like hacking in ME 2 but HATE bypassing. Its boring. That minigame from ME 1 was fun, I would like to see it return instead of bypassing.

This. Bring back Frogger.

I didn't mind the hacking in ME2 hacking in ME1 is ridiculous. In the future, we override door locks, survey minerals, and recover rare artifacts by playing Frogger... LOL

This little game really grates when you play through again, there should be some feature avaiable on subsequent playthroughs to just take resources etc from wall safes, but still have to bypass doors and hack important story nodes

Hacking needs to go. This is one thing I'd like to see be purely stat based. Basically check how manny tech-using squadmates you have and add it up, 1 point for infiltraitor/sentinals, 2 for engineers. Check number against the thing your hacking. Meets requirement, your through. If not, then your not.

This way we don't have to sit through the minigame, but you would have to plan and have a tech specialist if you want to hack things. Which makes sense. Or more sense then ANY class having the same difficulty hacking and overriding systems...

Better than just rubbing everything in with omni-gel.
