Alright so, this might be some sort of obvious user error on my behalf, and if so I'm sorry for wasting your time, but I seem to be completely unable to bind the following keys:

L/R shift
L/R alt
L/R ctrl

These keys would greatly enhance my combat capability and fluidity. Any reason I can't use them?

I can't seem to bind them either.

I use left shift and left alt as movement bindings in all PC games (instead of WASD), and am pretty annoyed that something this simple has been overlooked.

There have been no other replies on this, so I assume most are just sheeping this off and accepting that it's impossible. In another small way, Bioware has dropped the ball on this one.

As it stands, I will manually edit the keybindings.ini file from the Bioware folder in my documents.

Hopefully Bioware will look into patching this.

I sent a question to support about this issue, and got a pretty speedy and polite response; here's the important bits, emphasis mine:

"We are sorry but we will not be able to help you out with this issue. I advise you to please report a bug, please post on the game forum. These forums are maintained and monitored by the community leaders and production team. By posting on these forums you will be able to submit direct report to the appropriate person. Please make sure that you follow the EA terms of service when posting.
...
In the meantime, I will pass the information you have provided to the development team. Regretfully we do not have information on if or when a fix will be put in place. They are however collecting data from the community and are examining solutions if they determine enough customers have the problem and the problem is technically addressable with a patch, or if a work around is possible."

So, since pretty much every PC game released has let me bind these keys before, I would assume it is technically possible to fix this. it looks like if enough people have the problem, then someone might look at it. Surely there are others who have come across this problem.

I have an additional problem that Home and End seem to be permanently bound to moving the camera up and down despite the keys not bound to anything. Therefore it makes them almost unsuable for any other bindings, which is frustrating.

Edit: If memory serves, the Home and End buttons were the same in DA:O. Unable to be unbound to the camera movement despite being able to be bound for other things.

At the moment, this setup is by design. Shift/Ctrl/Alt are all modifiers but not the primary key. So you can map Shift-C, Shift-Ctrl-Alt-B, etc. but not just a single modifier key. We also don't
differentiate between left and right modifier keys.

I have added this to the list of suggestions for future projects/expansions, but at the moment, this is not something we're looking at changing for Dragon Age II. Thanks for the feedback.

Thank you for the reply.

I am not happy with the answer, though. Saying that certain keys are "modifier" keys that can't be bound without a corresponding key is "by design" is fairly lame on the part of the designers, in my opinion. There could have been other ways of making "modifier" keys, such as not binding them in the key bindings screen until you actually release the combination keys that have been pressed together, e.g. holding down a + b together and then releasing them. You could even let the user customise the modifier keys themselves, or something to that effect.

As a customer, this is extremely frustrating; I have paid good money to support the gaming industry and something so simple is overlooked before the game's release, and then taken seriously for future projects, yet not for this one. It isn't something about a subjective topic such as "the story sucks" or "I think this character is stupid," it is a technical one that has been addressed in a multitude of PC games before this one.

I appreciate that there is a large amount of work that goes into software, let alone into games, but I feel as if something that would most likely be appreciated by more gamers than just myself and the others in this thread is being ignored. If there is some technical limitation that prevents it from being changed then that's one thing, but being "by design" is kind of nuts to me.

Anyway, thank you for replying, but again, I am not happy with the answer.
