I've managed to find all five evil tomes, but rather than destroy them I took them since I felt it was more in line with the kind of Hawke I was playing (why would a blood mage destroy books on blood magic?). Usually Bioware will have an alternative/evil option for completing quests and it's bugging me that this one's sitting in my journal incomplete. Is there one?

What happened when you read the last tome? Did you fight a named desire demon?

What the...it doesn't complete if you take the tome? That is really lame.

If you read one book, you cannot finish the quest...unless it is the final tome, which is the 6th. To complete the quest, you must destroy all 5 (not read nor take) and then you can do what you wish with the 6th. Reading the 6th will give you the 2 attribute points, or you can destroy it, as I have found no difference in either option...except one gives you two attribute points.

I have read that you only get the attribute points once, as well, so saving it for the final tome gets you the complete rewards (nice mage staff from the desire demon) and the quest complete with the attribute points. Hope this helps.

No I don't believe so, you would've had to do it when the options were up.

On a side note, if you're tryi9ng to be friends with Merril I'd suggest not having her in your party when you do this quest as you suffer (-10) rep with her when you destroy the books.

Dang it, you serious? I'm getting frustrated, now. For various reasons, I've had to go back and restart act two several times, now. First, it was because I brought Merrill into "Night Terrors". Then, I messed up on our friendship again, but I didn't have to go all the way to the beginning because I had saved. Now, though, I have to restart from the very beginning because reading the first book I found in Forbidden Knowledge was, literally, the very first thing I did in act two.
Grrrr...

Yes this is really stupid, even though the quest says "Destroy" the tomes, I took them all. Oh well, guess I'll have to remember that for my next playthrough. ><

Alternately for Merril, remember that if you can max a companion's friendship/rivalry, it locks in place - so you can proceed to burn the books to your heart's content.

I didn't have much trouble getting Merrill to 100. even with a few negatives along the way Just be kind to mages, and be kind to her. She responds intensely well to gentleness. A lot of her points aren't really based so much on what you say, as how you say it. And personally, I have a hard time being cruel to her anyway.

Yup, getting influence with Merrill can be hard for some players because they get used to everyone else and their "causes" and "beliefs." The best way to rack up the influence with Merrill is to always use the Good dialogues, and especially use the Love options.

She was so much easier to romance than Leliana was in DAO, thank goodness for no obscure romance flags that can easily be missed in conversation!

I do not know if this is in the spirit of Bioware, but it seems rather dull to me that there is absolutely no info. about choosing to keep it or destroy it.

Look for dragon age wiki in google, it usually has all the quest details including locations, bookmark it, problem solved.

You could use the power of necromancy. :P

This might help with the fight.

Hm thank you :)

That´s worth to quote Anakins mother from the phantom menace (Star wars)

"you brought back hope to those who had none"

I destroyed the tomes in the Chantry, Viscount's Keep and in the cave at the Bone Pit. I went to the Wounded Coast but there's a cart in front of the cave I need to enter. Frustrated I went to Sundermount where I could enter, however because it's only the 4th tome I've destroyed the final part did not open. Anyone know why I couldn't get at the tome on the Wounded Coast?
